On August 25, Ominvore Recordings will release a brand new, expanded version of Alex Chilton’s 1995 album A Man Called Destruction.
Chilton had a long legacy in a number of bands starting with the Box Tops where he was lead singer on such songs as The Letter, Cry Like a Baby and Soul Deep and followed in the 70’s with the critically acclaimed by often overlooked Big Star. Between 1979 and his death in 2010, Chilton released eight solo albums.
A Man Called Destruction was divided evenly between Chilton originals and covers of songs like Lies, You Don’t Have to Go and The New Girl in School. When it was released, the Orlando Sentinel said “Plenty of bands attempt, however feebly, to reproduce Big Star’s melancholic power-pop. But nobody else would dare try to approximate the brilliant, offhand weirdness and subtle irony of Chilton’s later solo work. Teenage Fan Club might be able to imitate Big Star’s guitar sound on September Gurls, but they couldn’t transmogrify Volare the way Chilton did on 1987’s High Priest. Destruction is very much in the tradition of High Priest — a peculiar mélange of deliriously cheesy pop.”
The new edition includes seven previously unreleased tracks along with new liner notes by Bob Mehr.

On September 8th, Los Angeles art-rock duo Sparks will return with their first solo album in eight years. It’s titled Hippopotamus and marks their 22nd studio effort overall following 2009’s The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman and their 2012 debut release as FFS, a supergroup featuring Franz Ferdinand.
Recorded in Los Angeles, Hippopotamus spans 15 songs, including titles like “Giddy Giddy”, “I Wish You Were Fun”, and “Missionary Position”. According to an official statement, this new material finds brothers Ron and Russell Mael “take the pop form, shake it up, and create an album that is adventurous, fresh and idiosyncratically ‘Sparks.’”

Coming out of the bleakness that was 2016, TOPAZ is an ode to new beginnings and renewal. “I was floundering, in between jobs, in an existential funk, so I consciously started 2017 with a new mindset. I quit drinking, and began focusing on TOPAZ”. With fresh determination, he dusted off his electric guitar, and began writing.
TOPAZ dives into anxiety, existentialism, and finding stillness in the whirlwind of life. These tracks weave a delicate balance between celebration and understatement. Salute and Shadows; 80’s albums from fellow Orillian Gordon Lightfoot, initially inspired Shawn to begin working on TOPAZ. “The sonic quality of those records, the subtle mix of synths and electric guitar really got me excited about the prospects of creating again, up until that point I was primarily listening to Ambient and New Age music” There’s an ease in this album that navigates themes of travel and finding the familiar in unknown places throughout Canada with songs like “Autumn in New Brunswick”, and “Gros Morne” while digging deeper on a personal level with “Mouse Not The Man” and exploring the art of storytelling with “You’re Lonely, Too”, and “Young In Love (At The End Of The World)”.

BEFORE BREAKFAST finds the award-winning group at a career high point vocally and musically, and the record’s energy is palpable. A more relaxed pre-production approach led to “easy” song choices. The band chases demons, finds salvation and dances their way through what will surely become essential listening for lovers of the Bluegrass art form.
This is the second album for this configuration of The Grascals. The current group features founders Terry Eldredge (lead vocals, guitar), Terry Smith (lead vocals, bass) and Danny Roberts (mandolin), plus longtime banjo ace Kristin Scott Benson, fiddler Adam Haynes and John Bryan (lead vocals/guitar). As Smith notes, the group continues to evolve organically. “We’re even breathing together vocally,” he explains. “The Osborne Brothers always said that when you get to that point, it was right – and they were on to something.” This cohesiveness allows the band to navigate the diverse material, which ranges from traditional to contemporary Bluegrass, and includes Inspirational tunes as well.
The album kicks off with “Sleepin’ With The Reaper,” which Benson calls “a departure for the group but a good fit nonetheless.” John Bryan’s haunting vocal brings a sense of menace and urgency to the song, which sets the stage for the next dynamic track. Vocalist Terry Eldredge believes the best songs are about life and truth, and that lyrically, there is nothing but the truth in “Demons.” El’s vocal versatility is obvious on “Clear Corn Liquor,” a steamin’ hot, fiddle-filled ode that he delivers with sass. “Delia features John on a band first,” says Danny Roberts. “His clawhammer banjo is unique for us and gives a great old-timey sound to the song.” Terry Smith is in fine form on the melancholy, universally-themed ballad “Lonesome,” which he co-wrote with his brother Billy. John brings glorious gratitude to the Gospel jewel, “I’ve Been Redeemed.”
