An expanded version of a previously self-released EP, I Don’t Know What to Feel is the label debut of the Dove & the Wolf after the duo signed with Fat Possum. With the exception of an instrumental closer, the set is marked by crisp, harmonized vocals laid over delay-drenched soundscapes that land in a remote territory between dream pop and ’70s soft rock. The seven-song EP’s original five tracks were recorded and produced by two champions of elegant texture: Dave Hartley, the War on Drugs’ bassist who releases experimental dream pop as Nightlands, and Nick Krill, leader of the Spinto Band and kaleidoscopic electropop outfit Teen Men. They prove an inspired fit for Paloma Gil and Louise Hayat-Camard’s reflective, carefully crafted musical demeanor. The first song, “Are You Thinking of Me,” opens with velvety a cappella vocals, establishing the singers’ technique of always singing in tandem. A warm, echoing, electric guitar line joins them, followed by the rhythm section. Like the rest of the record, simple but textured arrangements spread extended and altered chords under melancholy melodies and lyrics like the opening line “Getting tired of drafting messages I’ll never send to you.” There are lighter moments, such as the more uptempo “The Smell of Us,” with rhythmic and melodic guitar counterpoint, but the record is so consistent in sound and tone, despite a range of tempos and harmonic flair, that it still settles in like a daydream, enveloping rather than seeming to seek attention. That alone is quite an achievement for a debut, and the songs are nice, too.

Recorded on July 3, 2016, in front of a rapturous audience of more than 65,000 fans, Tapestry: Live at Hyde Park celebrates the 45th anniversary of a zeitgeist-shifting touchstone album that established Carole King as the quintessential singer-songwriter, a “Natural Woman” who gave voice to the emotions and experiences of millions of listeners around the world. With songs that are literally woven into the fabric of pop culture, Tapestry struck a universal chord, topping the Billboard 200 for 15 weeks and staying on the chart for six years. King took home four Grammy Awards for the album, including Album, Record and Song of the Year. And the songs, including “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late,” “I Feel The Earth Move,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and others remain timeless standards and radio staples.

The artist’s largest concert since her legendary 1973 show in Central Park, Carole King’s historic Hyde Park performance marked her first British concert since1989 and the first time she’d performed Tapestry on stage in its entirety. The album showcases Carole leading a full band (including guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, who played on the original Tapestry album) through the album with the bonus addition of some of her personal favorite compositions from her formidable songbook. Guest performers include her daughter, Louise Goffin, who joins Carole on several tracks including “Where You Lead” (which the duo re-recorded as the theme song to the popular television series “Gilmore Girls”) plus the Laurence Olivier Award-winning West End cast of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”

Originally released in 1971, Tapestry established Carole King–already a noted songwriter of smash hits for Aretha Franklin, The Everly Brothers, The Monkees, The Drifters and many others–as an extraordinary performer who defines the singer-songwriter genre from the 1970s onward.

Additional performances on Live at Hyde Park include a Gerry Goffin/Carole King medley featuring “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “It Might As Well Rain Until September,” “Go Away Little Girl,” “I’m Into Something Good,” “One Fine Day” and more.

On their fifth album, The Feast Of Three Arms, the murder balladeers introduce us to Willie’s cousin, Jubal with No Last Name, and his quest to kill the man that did his mama wrong. This detailed tail is delivered through seventeen movements, with Raww leading each ballad with a spoken oration, setting the scene for each subsequent musical segment of this ominious tale to unfold. Recorded at Coast Recording and mixed at Discrete Recording, both in San Francisco, the album features guest fiddle by Alisa Rose and keys by Nigel Pavao, and artwork by Tabitha “Stabitha” Lahr.

Six years after their last album, ‘No Ifs, Ands or Dogs’, Cheer-Accident are back with their eighteenth studio album. During the last thirty years they have had something of a fluid line-up (including members who don’t actually perform with the band, or do normally but don’t play on this album), and there are fourteen musicians credited here, but at the heart of it there has always been Jeff Libersher (guitar, trumpet, vocals, keyboards) and Thymme Jones (drums, vocals, piano, trumpet, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, moog, noise).

Willie Nelson is 82 and has earned the right to nostalgia. His agreeably slight new release, “Summertime,” is a songbook album, a stroll through some of George and Ira Gershwin’s best-loved songs. Among the 11 Gershwin classics recorded by Willie Nelson for his new album are two duets: “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” with Cyndi Lauper (the song was originally introduced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1937 film Shall We Dance) and “Embraceable You” with Sheryl Crow (the song was performed by Ginger Rogers in Girl Crazy, recorded by Billie Holiday in 1944 and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005).

Pert Near Sandstone’s forthcoming album ‘Discovery Of Honey,’ out November 4, finds the distinguished bluegrass and folk collective coming full circle after a decade at the forefront of the American roots music scene. They’ve reunited with founding member Ryan Young, who spent much of the past decade performing with Trampled By Turtles, to mix and co-produce this new album, and cut it while gathered around a microphone in a basement studio similar to how they made their debut. Pert Near Sandstone burst forth with a flurry of fiddling, picking and stomping on ‘Discovery Of Honey,’ a 12-track album featuring all original music, with lyrics written by four members of the band.

Pert Near Sandstone is mandolin/fiddler Nate Sipe, banjoist and lead vocalist Kevin Kniebel, guitarist J Lenz, bassist Justin Bruhn and clog & fiddler Matt Cartier. The band gathered at founding member Ryan Young’s new home in an end-of-days bunker with 2-foot thick concrete walls built in the basement by the previous owner. They cut the majority of the album there in just two days.

Songs like “Rattlesnake,” “Hard Times Pass Me By,” and “Getaway” illustrate Pert Near Sandstone at their most fierce; breakneck tempos and a deluge of picked and bowed strings. Lead single “Bloom Again” shows the band’s deft folk songwriting sensibilities, a pensive number with a stomping mid-tempo rhythm. “Enough Said” flirts with traditional Irish folk song, while “Biting My Nails” closes the album with an anthemic slow-burner.
Pert Near Sandstone has performed on Prairie Home Companion, at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and shared stages with Steve Martin, Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, and Yonder Mountain String Band. They also host their very own music festival, Blue Ox, which has featured performances by Bela Fleck, Shovels And Rope, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many others.
