    When you press play on Loé Loa: Rural Recordings Under the Mango Tree, Betsayda Machado’s voice rises like a 747 airplane: impossibly big but soaring all the same. You get a cadence, then a repeat from her backing chorus, and then the percussion hits. And if you thought Machado’s voice was big, get ready to understand why, in Puerto Rico, parrandas are sometimes called asaltos, which translates to “assault.” The beat barrels in exactly where you wouldn’t expect it to be, and you’re off to the races.

    With just vocals, handclaps and drums—so many drums—Machado and her backing band La Parranda El Clavo are playing a stripped-down version of Venezuelan parranda. The genre’s name sort of translates to “party” or “spree,” and the feeling on the album is very celebratory and social. The roots of parranda reach back to Africa and its siblings can be found in Colombia, Puerto Rico, and elsewhere in Latin America. This particular strain, however, is as local as they come. Although her career has taken her to Caracas, Machado returned to her hometown of El Clavo in Barlovento, Venezuela to make this record with a group that has been there for 30 years.

    It is the sound of a very specific part of Afro-Venezuelan culture, people descended from those brought there to work in the cocoa fields, and some who farm cocoa still. Machado and the band are excellent ambassadors. Everywhere her forceful and nimble voice goes, the group capably follows. Though the music keeps up a steady pace, dynamics emerge.

    The group was invited to Lincoln Center last year but could not clear visas in time. Their first tour is going on now. The touring ensemble and the record, released by Odelia, are supposed to be pale imitations of what you would hear in El Clavo when hundreds of players get together under the mango trees to sing and celebrate, but for those of us who can’t go down to Venezuela next Christmas, the album will to suffice.

    When Their Satanic Majesties Request came out in December 1967, fans asked, “Where did the Rolling Stones go wrong?”

    Released six months after the Beatles‘ similar, but way more culture shaking, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Satanic Majesties seemed like a tossed-off afterthought at the time, the second-greatest band in the world’s take on the Summer of Love pop-art masterpiece. Besides, what business did a blues-based group like the Stones have with frilly psychedelic music anyway?

    The rebound was the following year’s Beggars Banquet, a back-to-basics triumph that also happened to kick off one of rock’s longest winning streaks. But nobody at the time knew what was right around the corner. So, 50 years later, where exactly did the Rolling Stones go wrong with Their Satanic Majesties Request? Fact is, they didn’t.

    Looking back at the album five decades down the road with the 50th Anniversary Special Edition, it’s clear now that the Stones’ psychedelic detour was just another progression on the path they started with 1966’s Aftermath and continued on 1967’s earlier offering, Between the Buttons. Their Satanic Majesties Request isn’t a perfect record, but it’s a lot better than most people, including the Stones themselves, gave it credit for in 1967.

    The anniversary set includes mono and stereo vinyl LPs, mono and stereo Super Audio CD versions, a booklet and the album’s original 3D cover art. The Stones didn’t have too many leftovers in their vaults, so you won’t find any bonus tracks here. But the mono mix, which Mick Jagger claimed was vastly superior, sharpens the material enough to shed new light on Satanic Majesties. Again, it’s not a perfect record, but it’s far from the kaleidoscope-eyed-stumble reputation that has dogged the album for so many years.

    Like Sgt. Pepper, its main reference point, Their Satanic Majesties Request is a loosely tied together concept album about the psychedelic revolution that was being stirred around in 1967. And like Sgt. Pepper, it’s held together more by related musical foundations than a unified theme. There’s not much difference between the two versions of “Sing This All Together” that open and close Side One of Satanic Majesties and the title track and reprise that bridge and (almost) bookend Sgt. Pepper.

    Of course, Sgt. Pepper got there earlier (as did other albums from that great year), and it’s the more fluid record, but parts of Satanic Majesties sound like contemporary companion pieces without the dusted-off nostalgia that occasionally seeps into the Beatles album. “She’s a Rainbow” and “2000 Light Years From Home,” particularly, come off as studio-kissed highlights of the era.

    Other songs, like “Citadel,” Satanic Majesties‘ toughest cut, slip into the mix in ways that make it seem like the Stones knew what they were doing all along (various members over the years have claimed the band was distracted and directionless during the making of the album). Even bassist Bill Wyman‘s “In Another Land,” which he wrote and sings, and which includes little input from Jagger and Keith Richards, is an integral part of the LP’s pattern when you hear it in context, though it made a lousy, and barely charting, single at the time.

    A lavish 50th-anniversary package probably isn’t going to change anyone’s mind about the album, mostly because anyone who’s going to spend money on it is already knows it’s not the embarrassing disappointment cynics claim. Time has softened those blows; Their Satanic Majesties Request holds up better than many other beloved works from the era. Open your ears and you’ll hear a key record by one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most important artists on the cusp, once again, of a grand new adventure.

    Renowned guitarist Kaki King announces her first release in more than two years, and once again she gives her fans something completely unexpected. Kaki King Live at Berklee with the Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra will be released on Friday, September 22, on birnCORE, the Berklee Internet Radio Network’s (BIRN) independent record label.

    The album, recorded live at the Red Room at Cafe 939 in April 2017, features King performing new arrangements of her solo guitar compositions, reimagined with the addition of strings and woodwinds. King, Tom Hagerman of Devotchka, and Berklee students Takuma Matsui and Shereen Cheong wrote the arrangements specifically for the recording. The Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra is a 12-piece ensemble composed of Berklee students and faculty, conducted by student Gabriela Sofia Gomez Estevez.

    Kaki King Live at Berklee is birnCORE’s first release to feature Berklee students and faculty collaborating with a visiting artist. King visited campus several times last spring to rehearse with the ensemble, culminating with the live performance and recording. The album was recorded by student Andres Felipe Gonzalez Cordona and mixed by alumnus Aaron Bastinelli ‘09.

    The Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra features students Cansu Ozyurek, Sam Draper, and Sumeet Sarkar on violin; Aida De Moya on guitar; Gerson Eguiguren Martinez and Jennifer Frantz on viola; John O’Hara on bassoon; Kaya Meller on trumpet; Li Yin Cheok on cello; and Christopher Allison on clarinet/bass clarinet. Helen Sherrah-Davies (violin), assistant professor of harmony, and Kari Juusela (cello and music director), dean of the Professional Writing and Technology Division, are also featured on the recording.

    The Wild Tchoupitoulas is a 1976 album by the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe The Wild Tchoupitoulas. The album features the “call-and-response” style chants typical of Mardi Gras Indians. Vocals were provided by George Landry, as “Big Chief Jolly”, as well as other members of his Mardi Gras tribe. Instrumentation was provided in part by members of the New Orleans band The Meters. The album also notably features Landry’s nephews, the Neville Brothers, providing harmonies and some of the instrumentation. While not a commercial success, the effort was well received critically and the experience recording it encouraged the four Neville brothers to perform together for the first time as a group. Meaningful of the geographic location of New Orleans as a Caribbean city, “Meet de Boys on the Battlefront” is based on the melody and rhythm of Trinidadian calypso artist Lord Invader’s 1943 “Rum and Coca Cola” made famous in the U.S. by The Andrew Sisters in 1944. In 2012 the album was added to the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Registry, a designation of “cultural, artistic and historic importance to the nation’s aural legacy.”

    The Wild Tchoupitoulas — a group of Mardi Gras Indians headed by George ‘Big Chief Jolly’ Landry — only released one album, but that one record caused a sensation upon its initial 1976 release. It was one of the first records of the album-oriented rock generation that captured the heady gumbo of New Orleans R&B and funk. Landry may have fronted the Wild Tchoupitoulas, but the key to the record’s success was his nephews, Charles and Cyril Neville, who headed the rhythm section. They drafted in their brothers, Art and Aaron, to harmonize, and thereby unwittingly gave birth to the band that became the Neville Brothers. Still, the fact that The Wild Tchoupitoulas ranks among the great New Orleans albums isn’t because of the Nevillles themselves, but the way the Wild Tchoupitoulas lock into an extraordinary hybrid that marries several indigenous New Orleans musics, with swampy, dirty funk taking its place in the forefront. There are only eight songs, and they are all strung together as if they’re variations on the same themes and rhythms. That’s a compliment, by the way, since the organic, flowing groove is the key to the album’s success. ~~AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
