Steve Martin & Steep Canyon Rangers – “The Long-Awaited Album” (2017)

In the liner notes for his new album, Steve Martin recounts a conversation with his agent in which, “as a warning, he said, ‘Remember, Steve, you’re selling something no one wants.’ He meant CDs, but I also heard it as ‘music from a 70-year-old comedian.’” Well, sure, if they want to put it that way. Beyond little things like the death of physical media, ageism, and aversion to actors crossing over to other disciplines, there’s also the nearly global disinterest in acoustic string bands. Martin is too much the bluegrass booster, of course, to cite as an additional reason why “The Long-Awaited Album” might not move in the quantities “Jerk” videotapes once did.
But with this new record, actually, just as he has for the last decade, Martin is giving fans exactly what they want — at least that admittedly smaller subset of fans who value both his absurdity and his seriousness of intent. He seems to feel that the time for doing it all in movies like “Roxanne” has passed, but now he’s able to independently pull it off in his music, where lowbrow joke songs are juxtaposed with tender ones, and where the chops are serious even in the ones where the words aren’t. These primarily musical last 10 years of his have been on par with his first decade as a star, and if the mixture of comedy riffing and clawhammer banjo he’s doing out on the road have distracted him from fielding any “Grandfather of the Bride” offers, all the better for everyone (except maybe that agent).
The very title of “The Long-Awaited Album” tells you that Martin has gotten a lot more comfortable with making comedy a crucial part of his bluegrass persona than he was when he released the less wackily titled “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo” to kick off this part of his career in 2009. It’s a veritable variety show of an album, with three overtly laughable numbers that Martin sings, six less comedic tunes in which he defers to the Steep Canyon Rangers’ Woody Platt for more melodious lead vocals, and five quickie instrumentals. It’s a good mix that lets you know Martin realizes no one wants to hear him sing novelty tunes for an entire album, and that he also realizes no one wants to hear him sing no novelty tunes for an entire album.

DUSAN JEVTOVIC fusion του παλιού καιρού με πολλές αναφορές και προσωπικά στοιχεία
Για το σέρβο κιθαρίστα Dusan Jevtovic έχουμε γράψει κι άλλη φορά, όταν αναφερθήκαμε στο άλμπουμ του “Am I Walking Wrong?”, που είχε κυκλοφορήσει κι εκείνο από την MoonJune, το 2013. Στο παρόν “No Answer” [MoonJune, 2017] ο Jevtovic«απλώνει» εννέα δικές του συνθέσεις, τις οποίες διεκπεραιώνουν (πλην του ιδίου) οι Vasil Hadzimanovδιάφορα πλήκτρα και Asaf Sirkisντραμς. Δεν υπάρχει μπάσο δηλαδή στην ηχογράφηση, αν και κάποιο πλήκτρο κάνει καλή δουλειά.

Ο Jevtovicείναι βασικά συνθέτης – όχι πως δεν είναι και επαρκής ως εκτελεστής. Εννοώ πως έχει άποψη για το τι θέλει να κάνει, να προτείνει, και για το πώς γουστάρει, περαιτέρω, να ηχεί η κιθάρα του. Κάτι που ήταν φανερό και από το προηγούμενο CD του εξάλλου. Έτσι λοιπόν μέσα στο κυρίως σώμα του fusion, τη ηλεκτρικής επικοινωνίας της jazz με το rock, ο Jevtovic παίρνει θέση. Μια θέση δική του, κοντολογίς, που χαρακτηρίζεται από τους υπαινιγμούς στον κιθαριστικό ήχο της ECM (Terje Rypdal κυρίως, λιγότερο John Ambercrombie), αλλά και στο κλασικό ροκ… των Pink Floyd π.χ. (άκου το φερώνυμο track, το τέταρτο τού CD του, που συνδυάζει και τα δύο). Υπάρχουν επίσης συνθέσεις, όπως η “Lifetime” που ηχούν περισσότερο bluesy, και με επαρκή μέτρα αυτοσχεδιασμού, ενώ άλλες είναι πιο απλωμένες στο χρόνο, πιο ambient να τις πούμε, εμφανίζοντας σχεδόν πάντα εκείνο το nordicκλίμα (του Rypdal και άλλων – μη κιθαριστών εννοώ). Συχνά, συχνότατα επίσης, συνοδοιπόρος του Jevtovic είναι ο Hadzimanov στο πιάνο, ενώ ο Sirkis έχει ενισχυμένο ρόλο – να κρατάει το ρυθμικό τμήμα, συχνά, με ελεύθερους ρούλους.
Ωραίο ηλεκτρικό άλμπουμ, που δεν θα περάσει απαρατήρητο από τους φίλους του είδους.

Multi-instrumentalist/singer Larry Campbell and singer/guitarist Teresa Williams have long provided musical firepower for fellow artists including Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, Little Feat, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Rosanne Cash. When the duo stepped onto center stage in 2015 with their Red House Records debut, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, the response was immediate: the release placed them atop the Americana radio charts, Mojo called them “The first couple of Americana” and Uncut gave the album 9/10 stars, describing it as “Passionate, eloquent, spilling over with regal harmonies… channeling Emmylou and Gram.” In January 2017, armed with a new collection of Campbell originals, the pair headed back into the studio with longtime drummer/engineer Justin Guip and new bassist Jesse Murphy to record their follow up. Contraband Love represents a leap forward for Larry and Teresa as they dive even more deeply into their shared pool of musical and life experience. Williams continues to impress as a vocalist, turning in stunning performances on Campbell originals “Contraband Love” and “Save Me From Myself.” Her interpretive skills are showcased on two surprising covers: the Carl Perkins classic “Turn Around” (featuring drumming by Levon Helm on one of his last sessions), and “My Sweetie Went Away,” penned in 1923 and popularized by Bessie Smith. High octane originals “Hit & Run Driver” and “The Wishing Well” give Campbell ample room to show off his vocal prowess as well as his legendary dexterity as a guitarist. Campbell particularly shines on his soul ballad “When I Stop Loving You,” co-written with Stax Records songwriting legend and recent Grammy winner William Bell. Building on the bedrock of album one, Contraband Love features adventurous songwriting, powerful new interpretations of their blues and gospel influences, sterling musicianship and some achingly vulnerable vocals by Teresa and Larry as they tackle emotionally stormy themes of love and betrayal.

Hamilton Loomis – Basics (2017)
