45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD.

The show includes songs from throughout David’s career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics, including ‘One Of These Days’, the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show. Both concerts also saw very special performances of ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ from ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ which David rarely plays as a solo artist. The 2-disc concert CD was produced by David Gilmour, and mixed by Andy Jackson and David Gilmour.

David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ shows an artist at the top of his artistic game, performing incredible material with his world-class band, in a unique setting on one very special occasion.

After 20 years of making sure children have access to free books through her Imagination Library, Dolly Parton revealed plans Tuesday for her first children’s album.

“I Believe In You” will be available digitally Sept. 29 and in stores worldwide Oct. 13. All 13 songs on the album were written by Parton. Proceeds from “I Believe in You” will benefit Parton’s Imagination Library.

“My first album was released 50 years ago and it’s been an amazing 50 years since then,” Parton said in a statement. “I am very excited that now I’m coming out with my first children’s album in all of those 50 years. I’m proudest of all that all of the proceeds from this CD will go to the Imagination Library.”

Sticky Fingers album live in concert for the first and so far only time in their career. The show celebrated the reissue of the Sticky Fingers album and was the opening night of The Rolling Stones Zip Code Tour of North America that would run over the next two months. The intimate setting of the Fonda Theatre was in contrast to the huge stadiums in which the band would perform for the rest of the tour and made this an incredibly special occasion for those fans lucky enough to get a ticket.

The fact that Pere Ubu has been flying under the radar for the majority, if not the entirety, of the band’s career is at the same time surprising and somewhat expected. Retaining an excellent balance between the sound that defined the late ‘70s to mid-‘80s, in new wave and post-punk, and at the same time layering that foundation with avant-garde augmentations, Pere Ubu is not a very easy band to follow. Aspects of musique concrete and krautrock notions living beside blues and garage rock is a strange mix, no matter how successful Pere Ubu was in nailing the bizarre cocktail.

Revolving around main man, vocalist David Thomas, the line-up of the band has constantly been changing, but that is not something that has slowed the band’s prolific output. Since its inception back in the mid-‘70s, Pere Ubu has remained active and is about to release its 16th full-length in 20 Years in a Montana Missile Silo, following the highly bizarre, even by the band’s standards, Carnival of Souls. The band’s 2014 album was a tour de force of experimental rock, diving headfirst into the avant-garde depths and unearthing a terrifying gem of a record. Tracks like the mysterious “Doctor Faustus” and the colossal “Brother Ray” are some of the most compelling material the band has ever released.

In that respect 20 Years in a Montana Missile Silo does not share the same dark, exploratory sense of its predecessor. Still elements of that quality exist, as in “Plan From Flag 9”, which is based on samples and minimal instrumentation accommodating a spoken word-like performance by Thomas. Always retaining this off-kilter essence, alongside an almost sadistic view towards structure, as the track reaches the promise of a crescendo that never arrives, Pere Ubu still display this intricacy when it comes to compositions. The mysterious and mesmerizing tonality of “I Can Still See” is another moment of this hypnotic experimentalism, as it slowly puts you under Pere Ubu’s spell and drags you in the band’s realm.

Ibeyi’s stellar self-titled debut album was a flashpoint that steeped itself in brittle electro-drenched R&B and roots Yoruban percussion and openly engaged the saints of Santeria: its introduction was an invocation to Elegua (the gatekeeper between worlds) and the goddess of wind and storms in “Oya.” On the French/Cuban sibling duo’s sophomore effort, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz address matters more corporeal and rooted in lived experience. …mixed French, English, and Yoruba, the set opens with “I Carried This for Years,” with a sample from Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and Naomi’s bata and cajon entering amid loops and a synth bassline before the chant “Away Away.” They are answered line by line by a wordless male chorus. The bata introduces the second single (and video), “Deathless.” Its narrative relates an encounter between a then 16-year-old Lisa-Kaindé and a white French cop. It resonates with not only the immigrant experience in Europe but with recent events on the other side of the Atlantic: Charlottesville, Virginia; Ferguson, Missouri; Baltimore, Maryland; etc. The vocals are almost ethereal as they deliver the bewilderment, confusion, anger, and resolve anchored by those drums, a crunchy loop, and Kamasi Washington‘s tenor saxophone acting as a spirit guide, adding woven lines between and after the singing: “He said, he said/You’re not clean/You might deal/All the same with that skin.” Their response? Defiance: “Whatever happens/We are deathless….”

In “No Man Is Big Enough for My Arms,” Ibeyi’s layered choral-style chanting of the title is accompanied by Michelle Obama’s immortal speech: “The measure of any society is how it treats its women and girls…” as cajon and bata encircle the synth ambience and looped bassline. “Transmission/Michaelion,” the set’s longest track, pairs the siblings with Meshell Ndegeocello’s bass, Lisa-Kainde’s dirge-like piano ambient noise, and multi-tracked choruses in staggered cadences as certain lyrics (drawn from the diaries of Frida Kahlo) juxtapose the spirit call of the natural world, love, and the state of the human soul as it longs for freedom: “Transmission/Lightening the layers of the past/At last, at last/We sing and our tears dry/Facing a clear sky….” Spanish rapper Mala Rodriguez assists on “Me Voy,” an emotional account of the decision to leave her beloved in pursuit of something more fulfilling and humanly edifying. (Lisa-Kaindé wrote the song when she was leaving Cuba.) The deep bata meets squelchy synths and electro basslines inside a melody equal parts cumbia and bolero.

In the end, Ash is many things: militant, vulnerable, and tender; it is urgent yet unhurried, its sharp edges unapologetically exposed. It is rooted in struggles and seeks victory, not deliverance. It is not only memorable, but indomitable and beautiful.
