Carl Verheyen Essential Blues brings together four world-class musicians for a rare showcase of all things blues. Named one of the World’s Top Ten Guitarists by Guitar Magazine and One of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Classic Rock Magazine, Carl now has 14 albums to his credit and is widely known as Supertramp’s lead guitarist.

For the first time in Seattle, Carl is bringing a four-piece band to Highway 99. Carl will be joined by longtime bassist Dave Marotta (Phil Collins, Neil Diamond, Bruce Hornsby, Manhattan Transfer) and the original CVB drummer John Ferraro (Boz Skaggs, Aaron Neville, Linda Ronstadt, Eddie Van Halen). Added to the mix is keyboard master Jim Cox, who has toured recently with James Taylor, Lyle Lovett, and Mark Knopfler. As Carl puts it, “Exploring the deep and wondrous avenues of the blues with this band is a very special experience for me.”

Lend A Hand to Hurricane and Earthquake Victims

The summer of 2017 has been riddled with a succession of natural disasters that have left millions in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean without electricity, food, clean water, homes, and in some cases, evidence of a thriving, vibrant city. We’ve seen the heartbreaking images of once lively streets now flooded with murky water, collapsed buildings, and heard the expressions of people ranging from immensely courageous to total despair.

Afropop has been privileged to visit many of the countries affected by the natural disasters of 2017, like Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico. We’ve conducted field research on the Afro-roots music in the regions and shared the stories of creativity and resilience of their people through history. Needless to say, we were horrified to see the recent devastating images from those countries we’ve visited, written about and made deep connections in. We’ve seen how overwhelmingly the worst affected–immediately and for years to come–by these earthquakes and hurricanes are the very poor and communities of color. These are also the voices of the people we uplift on Afropop Worldwide, and so we are using our platform to spotlight some of the incredible organizations putting together benefit concerts and funds to aid those affected. Most of these organizations are right here in our neighborhood of Brooklyn and in the greater New York area. We will continue to update this list to include more of those in our community lending a helping hand.

Armada Fania Benefit Event (for Mexico and Puerto Rico)

This Brooklyn-based benefit event on Oct. 12 will feature music by Oscar Nñ, DJ Bembona and Uproot Andy. One hundred percent of ticket sales will go toward relief efforts in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Click here for tickets!

A Party Called Rosie Perez Presents: Puerto Rico Benefit

The monthly party will take place at SOB’s on Oct. 5 with 100 percent of proceeds going towards the Maria Fund which “will support organizations working with these hardest-hit communities in Puerto Rico.” Learn more here.

In addition, here are some donation sites in New York and Florida:

Tidal X Brooklyn Annual Benefit Concert

Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute

Best of The Beat on Afropop: Salute to Nigerian Independence–King Sunny Ade

Nigeria celebrates its 57th anniversary of independence on Oct. 1. For this occasion, and also to accompany this week’s debut of a new Hip Deep program, “Lagos Roots: Fuji, Juju and Apala,” today’s BOTB spotlights King Sunny Ade, a great Nigerian singer and bandleader who helped put Nigeria on the map for many, many music lovers. Following 25 years of increasing popularity in his home country, he burst upon the scene with an international tour and record release in 1982. That album, Juju Music, produced by Island Records (the label that launched Bob Marley and the Wailers on their worldwide career), electrified audiences with vibrant performances, joyous dancing, guitars for days, and melodic hooks that even Westerners could sing along to.

Sunny Ade is also part of the origin story of Afropop Worldwide, as Sean Barlow was inspired to launch a radio program in 1986 after seeing the African Beats play live. It was consequential in my own life as well, as our music director at KCRW-FM, Tom Schnabel, was likewise inspired to start a weekly African music program, and appointed me to host it. That “African Beat” program fed into the establishment of The Beat magazine, originally a publication rooted in reggae music and emanating from Roger Steffens’ KCRW “Reggae Beat” program, on which this “Best of The Beat” series is based.

And so, in its third year of publication, and in evolution from handmade fanzine to a printed magazine format, The Beat ran this interview with Sunny Ade by Roger Steffens, discussing and describing the music and lyrics on the Juju Music album.

Culture and Rhythm at CCCADI’s “Trade/Ition”

“We’re going to end at the beginning” the MC gently intoned. “End with the drum. End with rhythm.”

The Children’s Village at Trade/Ition.

The last panel discussion of the day at the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute’s event, “Trade/Ition” was beginning. Those who had been at Aaron Davis Hall in upper Manhattan the longest had been there for around nine hours at that point. It was a day of lectures and panels, film screenings and kids’ events, centered on how traditions have been maintained in the face of genocide and enslavement, and how tradition and culture can continue to nourish and flourish in a year that has seen the re-emergence of unapologetic white nationalism and consistent attacks on communities of color. The drums were evidence of a connection that persisted through enslavement, and the percussionists from Haiti, Brazil and Puerto Rico were confident that their power remained.

Carlos De Olivera speaking at Artist Showcase “Rhythm Ascensions.”

Held Sat., Sept. 23, Trade/Ition was organized by the CCCADI to explore the sacred traditions of the African diaspora and to talk about the role of vodou practices in people’s lives. Hence the drumming, an essential part of Orisha religious services from West Africa to the Caribbean to anywhere else people trace their roots to the continent.

Evening presentation “Moving Mirrors”

The event culminated in a concert and dance performance which featured the hip-hop duo Oshun, and the unmistakable Navasha Daya.

Evening presentation “Moving Mirrors.”

And far from being an abstraction, the CCCADI was there to bring about change in the real world. The extent of the hurricane damage to the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico in particular, was coming into focus. The institute unveiled its campaign to contribute to the relief and recovery efforts to those affected by Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Thomas and St. Croix.

“One thing that we have learned from looking at our ancestors, at the sacred traditions that they practiced, is that we are a resilient people. This knowledge gives us strength and gives us a mandate to help our people affected by these recent natural disasters to rebuild. This is the time to come together and be giving in service and resources. That’s what we intend to do,” Dr. Marta Moreno Vega, CCCADI’s founder and director, said in a press release.

Mitzi Bazelais, Ra Sankhu Khepler, Dowoti Desir. Panel after screening of Ancestral Voices 2: Spirit Is Eternal.

From a musical standpoint, it was interesting that none of the musicians believed in an impermeable distinction between sacred and secular music. Carlos Mena, who spoke on one panel, is both a DJ and a priest. In either situation, he explained, he views himself as a vessel. The rhythm could simply be opening up someone to a good time, or it could be opening them up for something else. But the rhythm was always the first word.
