Simian Ghost started out as a recording project by Swedish songwriter Sebastian Arnström. After two critically acclaimed releases as a solo act, he asked his brother Erik Klinga and their mutual friend Mathias Zachrisson to join him.
Whilst receiving attention from both national and international press, the band released their first LP as a band, ‘Youth’, in 2012. Continuing the success of the previous efforts, ‘Youth’ garnered excellent reviews, including a lead review in The Times and a spot in The Guardian naming it “an early contender for the album of the year”.
The band spent more time honing in on their craft and then in 2014, released the 18 track double album ‘The Veil’. Following the thematically lighter ‘Youth’, it was a longer album focusing on the subjects of mental instability and western philosophy, while further pushing the idea of the music itself as a living being, disconnected from it’s authors.
Now a quartet (including the newly acquired bassist Wilhelm Magnusson), the band is preparing to release their fourth self-titled album ‘Simian Ghost’. Having made all their previous recordings at home with minimal equipment and resources, this album will be the first to contain some studio-recorded material. ”We’re just a bunch of guys doing stuff at home really”, the band states, ”so in many ways this feels like our debut album. We’re ready to do that now”. Co-produced by Thomas Hedlund (Phoenix), ‘Simian Ghost’ is released Fall 2017 via Heist or Hit.

Joon Moon is the Franco-American outfit of house producer and Nouvelle Vague collaborator Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin (Vanessa Paradis, Rufus Wainwright) and American expat and singer extraordinaire Krystle Warren, who previously worked with Hercules & Love Affair (”My Offense,” ”The Light”), Martha Wainwright and Erykah Badu to name a few. ”Moonshine Corner,” which stole part of its name from an Austin watering hole that had become a haunt during its first American mini-tour, is the sound of four people meeting at an unlikely crossroads named Melancholy. Recorded using modern studio techniques along with vintage 60s and 70s instruments, ”Moonshine Corner” places its chips on a subtly modern vibe through twelve love torn tracks that weave themselves around pop and trip-hop, folk and soul, jazz licks and electronic washes, digging their own groove in a river bed dug by years and years of exposure to Radiohead, Neil Young, and Zero 7.

From the name you might expect some drawling Southern boy, but, in fact, Pope (whose real name is Mikael Liljeborg) hails from Sweden where he’s made a notable impact on the homegrown Americana scene, the waves of which have increasingly rippled across to Europe and the USA.
Blue-eyed Boy is his seventh album and, if you’ve not heard him before, then the high pitched but raspy voice might take you by surprise, often sounding like some Southern female country singer, most notably the younger Lucinda Williams, particularly so on the lost love reflections of Ribbons In Her Hair.
That said, however, Don’t Lay A Hand On Him, sung in the voice of a father pleading parental neglect in defence of his killer son with Pope adding banjo and piano to his acoustic guitar, evokes The Band. Indeed Bloodline has a vocal delivery and melody line heavily reminiscent of their version of I Shall Be Released.
Working with instrumentation that features fiddle, accordion and plentiful pedal steel, save for the fiddle swirling ‘lovers on the run’ number The Baltic Sea and the dark-veined train rhythmed Infirmary (“I wanna leave, but death seems to miss this room”), the tempo throughout is measured in ballad strokes.
Many of the songs have been hanging around for up to ten years, looking for the right moment, the right approach. Here, that being raw, one-take recordings that mine the emotional depths of the lyrics that address themes of loss, searching and bruised hearts and souls with lines like “I was born with a one-way ticket in my hand” (No Man’s Land) or “I learned to dwell with the pain. I wanted the rainbow, but all I had was the rain” (the mournful waltzing Someone).
Echoing Nebraska perhaps, hard times percolate the narratives of things like the Appalachian mandolin flavoured Hard Land with Judith Fritz on harmonies and the Dylan-toned, fiddle stained Freewheeling, a song about escape in drinking and a resigned acceptance that it’s too late for healing that comes with an unexpectedly buoyant chorus refrain.
Using alcohol to numb the pain also informs the closing number, the old time rustic American of Visbyville, Louise Bylund on key harp and Roget Gustafson on dobro for an achingly lovely leaving song about guilt, regret and atonement.
First class throughout, it may be three years since he recorded any new material, but if he’s got any more like this in the archive, there’ll be no complaints if he decides to dust off a few more.

Nashville-based duo Haunted Like Human is marriage of diverse backgrounds to bring a distinct indie/folk voice.There is little that Oregon native Cody Clark hasn’t played. The guitar player holds a degree in music composition and has played everything from post-hardcore to jazz. Dale Chapman grew up in Georgia writing prose and poetry, and she brought her strong imagery and storytelling into her music. Through their myriad of influences, the two strive to create an intimate listening experience for their audience.

Blancmange’s new album Unfurnished Rooms (due out on 29th September) was written and recorded by Neil Arthur and co-produced by Benge (Wrangler/John Foxx & The Maths and Gazelle Twin co-producer).
For the new Blancmange record, all the songs were written by Arthur while Benge added percussion and layers of analogue synth, with the pair then mixing the record together in the latter’s Memetune studios in Cornwall. ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ features John Grant on piano and backing vocals.
