Named after the drink that is a cultural trademark of the band’s home region, The Sweet Tea Project began serendipitously when the veteran singer/songwriter and front man of the multi-platinum rock legends Collective Soul, began reconnecting with the rich club and coffeehouse scene in Atlanta. On random nights, he would invite some of these popular local musicians to his house to jam on tunes he had written that reached outside the stylistic jurisdiction of Collective Soul, including “Going to Birmingham,” one of the highlights from their debut album Devils ‘n Darlins that Roland penned on the ukulele.

Roland enjoyed the loose homespun atmosphere, especially the unexpected energy of co-writing new songs with some of these musician friends. Among the most frequent visitors as the casual Sweet Tea jams took shape were bassist Brian Bisky and Christopher Alan Yates (who also plays banjo and trumpet). The lineup of The Sweet Tea Project also includes guitarist Jesse Tripplet and drummer Mike Rizzi.

The Deer Creek Boys were originally formed in 1999 when brothers Justin Tomlin (guitar) and Jason “Tater” Tomlin (bass) and best friend Cason Ogden (mandolin) started picking locally in their native Amherst, Virginia. Fast forward to the present-day, when the group has been reformed with the members much more experienced and polished. The group added North Carolina banjo picker Andy Lowe to round out their sound, and have been a festival favorite ever since re-emerging on the scene!

Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards’s new album California Calling opens on an ethereal note: on first track “The Low Hum,” a captivating banjo line gives way to sublime vocal harmonies, the track slowly building to a multi-string crescendo. There are moments like this all over California Calling, an album which sees the quartet diving deeply into a world of unorthodox arrangements and genre-bending sensibilities.

The band recorded the album with producer Sam Kassirer, known for his work with Lake Street Dive and Joy Kills Sorrow. The resulting LP seamlessly blends each band member’s singular talents, from Cortese’s Berklee-trained vocals to fiddler Jenna Moynihan’s modern Scottish sensibilities.

“I wrote the title track of California Calling at the abandoned piano in the apartment where I’d fallen in love, married and divorced,” Cortese says. “The piano hadn’t been tuned in years. I loved that it sounded as warbly as I felt. When you build yourself up again after a loss like that, everything must be examined. There is a temptation to discard the you that came before. And yet that is the one thing that must be maintained. This album is about finding my way.”

A California native, Costello began writing songs as early as thirteen years old. Eventually she began performing her songs around Los Angeles, and when she turned seventeen, released her debut full-length album, Kaleidoscope Machine. A year later, Katie would leave the insular nature of Los Angeles to find new inspiration and cultural diversity in New York City’s Lower East Side. Upon moving to New York, Katie’s creativity blossomed into something tangibly beautiful, resulting in her second full-length album Lamplight, produced by Tony Berg, along with the release of various EP’s and singles.

With Twice the Love slated for a release this October, 2017 looks to be the year Katie Costello’s uniquely infectious “Rebel Pop” hits its much deserved stride, and maybe along the way, Katie’s songs will shine a little bit of light into the world.

Θα πω από την αρχή με τι σπάζομαι. Με το να μην μπορώ να γράψω (εύκολα) στο word τον τίτλο ενός συγκροτήματος, άλμπουμ, βιβλίου, περιοδικού κ.λπ. Πρόβλημά μου, το ξέρω, αλλά το λέω. ΣΑΣΤέΗΝ, λοιπόν, με το δεύτερο «Σ» ανάποδο και με δίεση αντί για τόνο πάνω από το «ε». Άιντε γραψ’ το…

Μ’ ένα ασπρόμαυρο fanzine έχουμε να κάνουμε λοιπόν εδώ (το πρώτο τεύχος του), που έχει ως υπότιτλο τη φράση «σημειώσεις περί συνθετών της ημεδαπής» και το οποίο τυπώνει ο γνωστός μουσικός, performer, blogger, μουσικογραφιάς κ.λπ. Στυλιανός Τζιρίτας.

Το ΣΑΣΤέΗΝ αποτελείται από τρία μέρη. Την Αρθρογραφία, τις Κριτικές Δίσκων και τον Λόγο Μουσικών. Τα κείμενα, που είναι ενδιαφέροντα, άλλα πιο πολύ, άλλα πιο λίγο, υπογράφονται από διαφόρους φίλους και γνωστούς (και αγνώστους) όπως τους Ξαγά, Καραμπεάζη, Μπαμπατζιά, Συμβουλίδη, Τσαντίλα, Μπάρλα, Κύρκο κ.ά. και αφορούν στους Σταύρο Ξαρχάκο, ΩRay, Πάνο Χαραλάμπους, 2 Βy Bukowski κ.ά. Γράφω κι εγώ κάτι για τον Κώστα Χατζή (ενδιαφέρον ή λιγότερο ενδιαφέρον… θα το πουν άλλοι).

Η γνώμη μου είναι, και αν εισπράττω σωστά την προβληματική τού Τζιρίτα (ερμηνεύοντας κάπως και τον υπότιτλο), πως από το fanzine θα μπορούσε να παραληφθούν οι δισκοκριτικές (ελληνικές και ξένες) –να δούμε κι ένα μουσικοπεριοδικό δίχως κριτικές–, ενώ και τα κείμενα φρονώ πως θα πρέπει να είναι γενικότερης φύσεως και θέσεως και όχι δισκοκριτικές με άλλο όνομα.

Θέλει να κάνει τη διαφορά ο Τζιρίτας; Να δώσει τότε ένα δεύτερο τεύχος με… σκέτα κείμενα για την ελληνική μουσική, ανεξαρτήτως αν αυτά θα παίρνουν αφορμή από κάποιον πρόσφατο δίσκο. Μιαν αποτίμηση π.χ. του πιο σύγχρονου έργου τού Μανώλη Γαλιάτσου θα μ’ ενδιέφερε να την διαβάσω ή ακόμη το πώς εντάσσεται ο σπουδαίος Δημήτρης Μυστακίδης (στο εξώφυλλο) σ’ αυτό το κίνημα της κιθαριστικής και όχι μόνον… αρχαιοπρέπειας, που κάποτε, έξω, έκανε πάταγο λόγω John Fahey.

Ελπίζω στα καλύτερα στο μέλλον για το ΣΑΣΤέΗΝ και, προσωπικώς, θα είμαι εδώ σε ό,τι με χρειαστεί (αν με χρειαστεί) ο Στυλιανός.

The Wilderness of Manitoba prefers to characterize itself as an evolving entity and founding member Will Whitwham is the last man standing. For the band’s new album, Across The Dark, the vocalist/multi-instrumentalist stepped up to write and produce all the songs himself. “The Wilderness of Manitoba is a collective whose sound is open to change as long as songwriting and harmonies remain at the forefront. It also relies heavily on a strong female voice to carry half of the lead vocals; my favourite instrument and one that I’ll never be able to learn!” says Whitwham. From the band’s inception, it has redefined itself with every new release; from Hymns of Love and Spirits through When You Left The Fire, Island of Echoes, Between Colours and the band’s various EPs. The evolution of their sound has run the gamut from four part harmonies and its initial chamber folk sound to duo lead vocals and an expanded sonic palette ranging from cinematic indie pop to anthemic folk rock. The current live band includes vocalist/guitarist Raven Shields, bassist/vocalist Tavo Diez de Bonilla and drummer Mike Brushey. “The touring and recording members bring fresh eyes and open ears. Playing with new people always brings a greener, more inspired revitalization simply because it’s change. And change is great if you don’t fight it too much.”

Though several of these songs later became staples (“Pocahontas,” “Ride My Llama,” the haunting “Powderfinger”), they never sounded quite as pure as they do here—never quite captured that elusive balance of ethereal and elemental that makes Young such a legend.
