Michael Kiwanuka – Love & Hate (2016)

cover320 kbps | 116 MB | LINKS

Love & Hate, Kiwanuka’s sophomore studio effort is no slump. Nor is it a carbon copy of his critically acclaimed debut. This is anything but another all-too-self-aware soul revival album. This is a genuine, evocative statement from a man who recognizes that our world is broken in so many ways, and that each and every one of us is looking for answers of some sort. Love & Hate is powerful, raw and very real. An album that, at once, is extremely personal and also completely universal. It’s also a gorgeous listen.

The sprawling opening track, “Cold Little Heart,” sounds more like early ’70s Pink Floyd than any song in the early Soul catalog. It’s a full 10 minutes of washes of slow psych-soul, haunting vocals and hypnotic slide guitar. Danger Mouse adds an expansive, lush element to the proceedings, and his sonic touches can be heard throughout: stirring string arrangements, background vocals drenched in reverb and a sweeping, cinematic quality that sets the tone for the whole album. “I’ve always wanted to make an album that felt and sounded like this one,” Kiwanuka said in a statement. “Working with guys as good as Danger Mouse and [producer] Inflo really helped me find what I was looking for.”

Ένα tribute λοιπόν στη φοβερή αυτή μορφή της jazz έχουμε εδώ, τον άνθρωπο που ηχογράφησε αριστουργήματα στα sixties κυρίως, καθώς μερικά από τα άλμπουμ του (“The Blues and the Abstract Truth”, “More Blues and the Abstract Truth”, “Sound Pieces” κ.λπ.)
ajazz%2Bvanore.jpg
Και απ’ αυτό το ρεπερτόριο δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει ένα μάλλον υποτιμημένο αριστούργημα του Nelson, το φοβερό LP “Black, Brown and Beautiful”, που τυπώθηκε το 1970 για την Flying Dutchman του Bob Thiele. Από ’δω ο Vanore διαλέγει για lead track κιόλας το “Self-help is needed”, ένα εκπληκτικό groovy hard bop, με το άλτο του Steve Wilson να πετάει φωτιές. Από το ίδιο LP μάλιστα ο Vanore διαλέγει κι άλλο ένα κομμάτι για να διασκευάσει, το “I hope in time a change will come”, με το σοπράνο αυτή τη φορά του Wilson να αποδίδει την μαγική μελωδία. Φυσικά, εδώ δεν ενορχηστρώνονται μόνον οι μεγάλες και διαχρονικές συνθέσεις του Nelson (“Stolen moments”, “Blues and the abstract truth”…), αλλά και στάνταρντ που δεν έλειπαν ποτέ από το ρεπερτόριο του μεγάλου arranger(“St. Louis blues”, “Greensleeves”).

Tracy Bonham – Modern Burdens (2017)

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of Tracy Bonham’s Gold debut record, 1996’s The Burdens of Being Upright. Instead of marking the occasion with a simple re-issue, Bonham went back into the studio with producer John Wlaysewski (of Late Cambrian) to re-record the entire album for modern times. Retitled Modern Burdens, the new album is out October 11th — International Day of the Girl — via Schoolkids Records.

“I wanted to revamp and refurbish the songs and put them to a modern template,” Bonham said in a press release. “To make it a creative endeavor, not just a commercial one.” As such, the tracks have been reinterpreted through an experimental filter, leading to more stripped down, slower takes. Their lyrics also take on new context in the Trump era, something Bonham intended from the start. “Many of the songs on Burdens are about this horrible, misogynist guy,” she explained. “So I just replaced his face with another.”

Kendell Marvel – Lowdown & Lonesome (2017)

Almost 20 years ago, in 1998, Kendell Marvel moved his family to Nashville to pursue a music career. On his first day working in Music City, Marvell wrote “Right Where I Need to Be” — a Top 5 hit for Gary Allan. He’d come to Nashville to be an artist, but with that first royalty check in hand, Marvel reconsidered.

“That made life a lot easier,” Marvel — who was briefly signed to RCA near the beginning of his life in Music City — tells The Boot. “That kind of opened my eyes to what could be done in the songwriting world. I wanted to see my kids grow up, be there for all the ball games and things.”

Dreams of a career as an artist took a backseat to writing songs for and with, among others, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Blake Shelton and Chris Stapleton. On Friday (Oct. 13), however, Marvel finally released an album of his own, Lowdown and Lonesome, a 10-track concept record that tells a story of heartbreak and vice (“Every song, I’m lowdown or I’m lonesome — one of the two,” Marvel explains).

“It worked out the way it was supposed to. I wouldn’t change anything about that,” Marvel says of waiting until now to release an album of his own. “If i could go back then and make a record, I wouldn’t do it. First off, it wouldn’t be near as good. I was a young man, and probably pretty stupid at the time.”

Bootsy Collins – World Wide Funk (2017)

Funk legend Bootsy Collins is back, and the whole world is going to feel it. The P-Funk pioneer will release World Wide Funk on Oct. 27, his first new album since 2011’s Tha Funk Capital of the World.

Collins turned to musical friends both new and old for accompaniment on his new album, with an eye-popping feature lineup including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Buckethead, Victor Wooten, Eric Gales, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Musiq Soulchild, the late Bernie Worrell and many more. But World Wide Funk is more than just a carefree, funky party—it’s also a call to activism. “Bootz on the ground, baby!” Colllins declares on the title track. “The whole concept,” Collins says, “was not only about playing music or being current on this album, but about teaching people how to funk for themselves so they can bring some funk to get some. We bring them hope like dope, so not one Funkateer chokes.” That’s a message of unity and uplift that this world needs to hear, perhaps now more than ever.
