After a thirteen year break, Jing Chi, the groovin’ blues fusion powerhouse featuring guitarist Robben Ford, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta deliver their incredible 4th record for Tone Center, Supremo, produced by Jimmy Haslip and co-produced by Robben Ford. Ford’s solo career and other collaborations, together with Colaiuta and Haslip’s demand as top LA session players, have more than kept the guys busyin the interim. However, when the opportunity arose to get together once again and make some great music, each player brought his A-Game to the table and the result is nothing short of a collaborative masterpiece that breaks new musical ground for this stunning trio. The Tone Center label’s mission has been to place highly talented, yet diverse players in the studio, and let the tapes roll. Tone Center’s fourth Jing Chi release continues to follow that tradition of the Super Session, but with more emphasis on their compositions. This is a collaboration between renowned guitarist Robben Ford who has been recording under his own name and as a session player since the 1970’s, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan) and bassist Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets, Tommy Bolin, Steely Dan) with special guest appearances by saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trumpet session veteran Mike Haynes. The collective sessions and the names of the A-list artists with whom the members of Jing Chi and their guests have played would literally fill a book as each performer has amassed a staggering discography. Supremo is more than a vehicle for fantastic soloing as the compositions are important, well arranged pieces of music that exhibit a synergy rarely heardin today’s music. The horns are used primarily as an underlying texture with clever lines that weave in and out bringing to mind vintage jazz and soul music with a modern edge. Producer Jimmy Haslip says this about Supremo and Jing Chi: These recordings are always compelling, tightly fused and joyfully challenging musically and creatively. We are like family, yet we are chemically charged at this point and that makes these projects easy to comfortably find clear focus and a unified direction. We have been working with chief engineer Rich Breen on all of the Jing Chi records. He is a gift and is the band’s sonic architect. I’m proud to say that Supremo is a high energy Modern R&B Fusion explosion of sound!

Amelia White – Rhythm of the Rain (2017)

Out of East Nashville, Amelia White is part of the growing phalanx of singer-songwriters that have blended styles around the distinct tonal qualities of their vocal style and range. Amelia’s previous release Home Sweet Hotel was critically acclaimed building on this she has delivered Rhythm Of The Rain a tonal poem that connects with moods and feelings of a gathering storm explored throughout the album. Savour and explore the tracks individually and as collections delve deep and discover the attention to detail held within the lyrics painting a picture with her words. The album is full of compelling originals, a mix of her own and those co-written with a number of collaborators. This mix helps to give the album variations and different approaches can be heard so that the songs captivate and never fall into the singer/songwriters trap of being in a rut of similarity. Opening with Little Cloud Over Little Rock we are introduced to her very distinctive vocal tone. Smokey, warm and full of country vibe and intonations.
Rhythm Of The Rain is an exploration of life but that does not make the well-crafted album Blues. The title track opens with a spoken word “Don’t think too much people”, a flippant line but true do not over analyse. The nine tracks that pick over life, from the warmth of summer sun, lust and addiction and the forthcoming storm. I suggest you take White’s advice. What you do need to do is listen to the carefully crafted lyrics. There is more to the words than being said, as the gothic side of life is explored under the beat of the drum and violin swirls. Yuma, co-written with Ben Glover has a lilting quality as she asks “are you still listening?” Yes, I am and will return to this album when I want to have music that flows with a smoothness. The delivery by Amelia connects to your soul and gives you the space to kick back and contemplate. The beat picks up with a catchy number harnessing the feel but slowed down this is not frenetic rock n’ roll as White, Said It Like A King. Closing the album with a number she wrote with Worry Dolls we are given hope as they Let The Wind Blow. The album has a completeness and complete package of compelling music. The songs let you get to know Amelia White. But only what she wants to share, as underneath there are untold stories and unshared stories and memories. Sit back and enjoy the music and never over analyze, if it suits your mood, music collection and more, then it is a good album harnessing the gentle ebbs and flows of the craft of a singer/songwriter.

VA – The Original Sound of Burkina Faso (2017)
To those outside of the region, Burkina Faso may be one of the lesser-known parts of West Africa, but the landlocked country adjacent to Ghana and the Ivory Coast has a musical pedigree that can stand proudly alongside its better-known neighbors. In the late ’70s and early ’80s, not long before then-President Thomas Sankara changed the country’s name from the French-colonial-era Upper Volta to its current one, new forms of popular music emerged as a soundtrack to the cultural revolution. In a new compilation, dedicated and respectful reissuers Mr Bongo have presented a widely varied overview of the songs that accompanied that crucial period of the country’s history.

…Amadou Balaké, probably the biggest musical star to emerge from the small country, and this collection includes a healthy serving, ranging from modern takes on the traditional Mandé style to intentional interpretations of contemporary Latin American music. A major proponent and proselytizer for Latin sounds who consistently incorporated them in his own music, his Afro-charanga “Whiskey Et Coca-Cola,” included here, became popular on the northern coast of Colombia, lately reclassified as a champeta classic by Barranquilla and Cartagena sound systems.

The Original Sound of Mali is a new compilation drawing together a selection of incredible music from, as the title suggests, 1970s and ’80s Mali. Compiled by the esteemed Mr Bongo label, the album covers a remarkably fertile period of Malian musical history, a time when new recording technology led to a gold rush of bands laying tracks down to tape. This period saw the early recordings from artists who would go on to worldwide acclaim; the likes of Salif Keita, Ali Farka Toure and Idris Soumaoro would later enjoy the championing of the ‘world’ music scene with their slickly produced internationally available CDs. This compilation goes back to a time before that, when they were still making music for a local audience. The production values are rawer, but the results are thrilling.
Includes gems from the region’s best known artist, Salif Keita along with plenty more nuggets such as The Rail Band’s AfroFunk zinger, Mouodilo; the mesmerising reverbs and distant drums of Worodara or the enchanting, reggae-tinged lilt of Bimoko Magnin by Super Djata Band; calypso from Le Ambassadors du Motel de Bamako.
