Lomond Campbell – Black River Promise (2017)

Originally hailing from the Scottish borders and a former long-time resident of Edinburgh, Campbell, eager to flee the clamour and turbulence of the city, upped sticks a couple of years ago, setting up home and studio in a leaking, decrepit, asbestos-ridden school house in the shadow of Ben Nevis.
Released on Campbell’s own acclaimed Triassic Tusk label at the end of 2016, the album was discovered by Jeff Barrett of Heavenly Recordings, who subsequently re-mastered the record, and are releasing it on vinyl for the first time.
Black River Promise is very much a chronicle of this transition from the white noise of the city to the near-silence Campbell’s new highland home. Deep, rich, astonishing and lyrically engaging, the album effortlessly skips between melancholic introspection and joyful euphoria and includes a 10-piece string ensemble assembled by cellist / arranger Pete Harvey (King Creosote, Modern Studies).
Amongst other things, Lomond Campbell is a regular musical sparring partner and comrade of King Creosote, BAFTA winning songwriter, Scottish Album Of The Year shortlister and FOUND collective member.

Big Sadie – Keep Me Waiting (2017)

Hailing from Chicago and fronted by Elise Bergman on upright bass and Collin Moore on guitar, with Andy Malloy on banjo and Matt Brown on fiddle, Big Sadie make their debut with Keep Me Waiting. An album of acoustic folk Americana and bluegrass that tells of everyday experience and emotions, from love and longing to loss and letting go.
Brown’s fiddle leads off album opener Danny, showcasing Bergman’s keening lead vocals and the quartet’s close harmonies. Its unhurried tempo characterises most of what follows, whether on the twangsome Moore-sung walking the floor swayer Before Morning, the Pasty Cline-like honky-tonk Baby It Ain’t You or the slow waltzing Good Woman.
Not that they aren’t adept at picking up the pace. Only You is a lively fiddle-led bluegrass jaunt down across the honky tonk floor, Anni’s Orchard a sprightly banjo and fiddle instrumental reel, Malloy tearing it up on Need Your Love and Next Train Home taking on a bluesy swing rhythm.
It ends on a quickstep too with Moore taking lead and Bergman duetting for Keep Me Waiting, some good time fiddle work and a nimble ragtime guitar solo gliding dancers around the floor. They’re new entrants in a fairly crowded field of old-school American folk revivalism, but on this evidence, they’ll soon be rising to the upper echelons of its ranks.

Elizabeth And The Catapult – Keepsake (2017)

Keepsake, the fourth album recorded under the imprimatur of her erstwhile day job, maintains a fanciful approach through even the most sorrowful themes. It’s an arresting next step from the talented songwriter, but, despite lyrical reflections their author believes to be her most personal, the keening theatricality still renders its subject alluringly remote.
In a way, to be sure, that coherency of approach seems no small miracle given the circumstances of Keepsake’s creation. Recorded in fits and starts over the three years since last Elizabeth and the Catapult release Like It Never Happened – a peripatetic spree packed with Brill soundtracks and stints interning with Son Lux and Kishi Bashi – the album ended up employing half a dozen producers and uses each to best advantage midst a technicolor spree that twirls seamlessly from the stage-whisper minimalism of “Magic Chaser” to the instrumental effervescence that runneth over “Ambrosia.”

ΜΑΝΟΣ ΜΥΛΩΝΑΚΗΣ μουσική για το θεατρικό “Festen”
Γνωστός ο Μάνος Μυλωνάκης τόσο από την παρουσία του στους Your Hand in Mine, όπως και από τις προσωπικές κυκλοφορίες του “Zyklon” και “Sólfar”, για τις οποίες έχουμε γράψει και εδώ στο δισκορυχείον. Το πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ τού Μυλωνάκη έχει τίτλο “Festen”, κυκλοφορεί από την καναδέζικη(;) Moderna Records [Recordisc], και αφορά στη μουσική του για τη θεατρική διασκευή τής φερώνυμης ταινίας (1998) του Thomas Vinterberg – έργο, που ανέβηκε πέρυσι από το ΚΘΒΕ σε σκηνοθεσία Γιάννη Παρασκευόπουλου, ενώ παίζεται κι εφέτος στο Φουαγιέ της Εταιρείας Μακεδονικών Σπουδών, στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Γνωστός, περαιτέρω, είναι και ο ηχητικός κόσμος τού Μάνου Μυλωνάκη. Όποιοι, εννοώ, έχουν ακούσει τις προηγούμενες δουλειές του δεν θα παραξενευτούν από το πώς ηχεί το “Festen”. Ο Μυλωνάκης συγκροτεί, αν δεν έχει ήδη συγκροτήσει από την εποχή των Your Hand in Mine, ένα σύστημα μελωδικών και ενορχηστρωτικών απόψεων και προσεγγίσεων, που αφορούν σ’ ένα κάποιο, ηπίως σοφιστικέ, στυλ chamber pop. Υπάρχουν δηλαδή έγχορδα (βιολί, βιόλα, τσέλο), που συντρέχουν μαζί με την κιθάρα και τα σύνθια, με το «σοφιστικέ» να χαρακτηρίζει περισσότερο την minimal προσέγγιση και το «pop» τις διάρκειες (δίλεπτα και τρίλεπτα κομμάτια βασικά – υπάρχει κι ένα πεντάλεπτο). Επεξηγώντας τους συγκεκριμένους χαρακτηρισμούς φθάνουμε, πιθανώς, σιγά-σιγά, στην ουσία των συνθέσεων του Μυλωνάκη. Πού είναι πoια; Η δημιουργία ηχητικών εικόνων, που να μπορούν να συμπλεύσουν με τινές οπτικές, μέσα από έναν κώδικα επικοινωνιακό που να μην αναιρεί το απλό και το κατανοητό. Και τούτο είναι ένα βασικό προσόν των συνθέσεων τού καλού μουσικού. Η απλότητα των μελωδιών του, οι σύντομες αναπτύξεις, οι λίγες νότες που έχουν αυταπόδεικτη αξία και όχι το πλεονασματικό και το παραπανίσιο.

Tom Waits – Glitter & Doom Live (2009/2017)

Musically, the performances are flawless, as is the sound on this set. The killer stage band includes Vincent Henry on woodwinds and harmonica, guitarist Omar Torres, Patrick Warren on piano and keyboards, Casey Waits on drums/percussion, and Seth Ford Young on bass. There is also a guest appearance by Sullivan Waits on sax and clarinet; Tom plays piano and guitar. Waits decided to ax most of the stage banter from disc one. This is problematic because it is as much part and parcel of his show as the music is. Without it, the music as a whole feels more like just a random but solid collection of live tracks, rather than Waits’ intended purpose of a single-show experience. The other problem is disc two, a bonus in this deluxe package comprised of a single 35-plus-minute track called “Tom’s Tales,” which splices stories and dialogue, reminiscences and spontaneous comedy. These routines work brilliantly and seamlessly in the context of his show. If one goes back to Nighthawks at the Diner or Big Time, evidence is ample. Without a song coming after these wildly various ruminations, they feel strangely disembodied and one can only hear it once or twice before the material itself feels old. Conversely, then, the musical disc feels incomplete, too. This one gets its grade strictly on the quality of the music. While the wide-spine digipack is beautiful, the project as a whole falls short, though some hardcore Waits fans will, as is customary, ardently disagree.
