Pentangle – The Albums: 1968-1972 (2017)

320 kbps | 1,1 GB | LINKS

When they formed in 1968, Pentangle were hailed as Folk’s first supergroup, fusing elements of jazz and underground music and comprising the twin guitar/songwriting talents of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn with bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Terry Cox and singer Jacqui McShee.

Between 1968 and 1972, Pentangle issued six albums – five on legendary Folk label Transatlantic and a swansong release on Reprise. Their debut, The Pentangle (1968), was hailed as a Folk Rock classic and charted in the UK at No. 21. Sequel Sweet Child (also 1968) was an ambitious double album coupling live and studio discs. Third LP Basket Of Light (1969) was their most commercially successful, peaking at No. 5, fuelled by the success of lead track ‘Light Flight’ (the theme to TV series Take Three Girls). Cruel Sister (1970) allowed Pentangle to reinterpret traditional folk songs. Reflection (1971), their last Transatlantic LP, was also among their most adventurous. Solomon’s Seal (1972) proved to be their last album with the original line-up.

For the first time ever, these albums are available as a deluxe box set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the band’s formation. Each record has been remastered from the best available sources, referencing original tapes and vinyl where relevant. Each album has been expanded with a wealth of bonus material, including choice selections from contemporaneous solo LPs by Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, out-takes and live tracks. Across the package, there are an impressive 22 recordings which are previously unreleased.

Each album is presented in a miniature card sleeve replica of the original vinyl artwork. These are housed in an attractive box set alongside an 88-page book awash with rare images and over 20,000 words of sleeve-notes, which include: a Q&A culled from past interviews by author Mick Houghton with Bert, John and Jacqui; essays about each album by a variety of music journalists (Stuart Penney, Trevor Leeden, Nigel Cross, Colin Irwin, Lois Wilson and Jim Wirth); a lengthy chronology; and track-by-track details.

Pentangle’s first three albums and three singles were produced by the legendary Shel Talmy (The Who, The Kinks, etc.) while Peter Blake designed the sleeve for Sweet Child (one of only three such commissions in the 60s). The band also enjoyed popularity in America and toured there. Alongside Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band, Pentangle define Folk’s flowering in the late 60s, melding jazz, rock, traditional folk and other styles.

The bodega has reopened for business!

Those of you who have been following us know that, a year or so after we joined WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio, our posting of new music here slowed down until we ceased offering new rips at all. I'm not going to bore you with the reasoning; it doesn't matter. What matters is that we're back, and -- inspired by fellow travelers Tim Abdellah Fuson and Peter Doolan -- we're going to kick off our reboot with a series of newly discovered cassettes.

First up, a live recording on cassette by Ali Salhien (على صالحين), with thanks to the aforementioned Tim for translation, transliteration, and most of the context below.

Ali%2BSalhien%2BSide%2BA.jpg

According to a posthumously created Facebook memorial page, Ali Salhien (also transliterated Aly Salheen) was considered The Star of Mawwals and Star of Maghagha, an Upper Egyptian city about 120 miles south of Cairo. The page was created on March 13, 2011, presumably not long after the singer's untimely death. We've not been able to determine his birth date.

Ali%2BSalhien%2BSide%2BB.jpg

This is the sole live video of the performer I was able to find -- fair warning that the sound quality leaves much to be desired. That said, it gives you a great sense of Salhien's energy and magnetism; near the end of the video you'll see a succession of audience members, all male, leaping onto the stage to dance together.

The cassette retains all of that energy, but with superior sound quality -- considering that it's a live performance, most likely in Salhien's hometown. I've ripped it at 320kbps and separated out distinct mawwals into individual tracks. It sounds something like a grungier, less electronic version of Islam Chipsy.

Ali%2BSalhien%2BCover.jpg

I found this cassette at Nourdine Bahri's Nassem Halal Meat & Mediterranean Grocery in Astoria, Queens.

IMG_5350.JPG

I've been visiting this particular bodega for at least 15 years. Long before I moved to the neighborhood, I made frequent trips up here from Brooklyn, visiting Nassem, the Nile Deli across the street, and a no longer extant Lebanese market run by a poet who seemed to have a story about at least one song on every single CD that I bought.

IMG_5352.JPG

Astoria is home to more than 75,000 residents; the population of this single neighborhood dwarfs that of the approximately 15,000 Algerian Americans spread across Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and New York City. Yet, there are somehow enough in the area to support Nassem, which up until 2010 sold hundreds of original CDs and cassettes. (Most of my Algerian CDs -- my entire Cheb Hasni collection, for instance -- were bought at Nassem in the aughts.)

IMG_5355.JPG

The few CDs that remain are pirated copies with paper labels that you risk destroying your player or DVD drive playing, let alone taking the time to rip. Last year, when Peter Doolan came to visit, we took a tour of the neighborhood, stopping by bodega, where each of us picked up a couple of cassettes.

IMG_5358.JPG

I went back last week and, after talking briefly with the Latino guy who has managed the butchery there since 1996, convinced him to pull out all of the remaining tapes for me. There were about 40 titles left. Spoiler alert: I bought them all.

As I make my way through these Algerian, Egyptian, Lebanese, Moroccan, and Syrian rarities -- some of which have been sitting on Nassem's shelves since the late 1980s -- I'll be posting those of special sonic interest here. Expect a new one once a week or so for the foreseeable future. If you know anything about the music (or at the very least, the language) I strongly encourage you to share your insights in the comments or by email.

This Wednesday's Bodega Pop Live show, by the way, will be focused on cassettes from around the world.

Orchestra Baobab – Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng (2017)

320 kbps | 103 MB | LINKS

Going ten years between albums is no big deal for Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab, whose integration of West African and Afro-Cuban styles made them a sensation in 1970. After cutting more than 20 albums between then and 1987, they split up for 15 years. They reunited for a tour in 2001, just as 1989’s classic Pirates Choice was reissued by World Circuit. They followed the tour with the killer set Specialist in All Styles, comprised of new material, a year later. (It was produced by Youssou N’Dour.) After more international touring, local residencies, and family commitments, it took another six years for Made in Dakar to materialize, but it was worth the wait.

Any band with a 47-year history has seen changes; OB is no exception. These began in 1974 when their original Wolof singer Laye Mboup was killed in a car crash. The band’s two great Casamance vocalists, Balla Sidibe and Rudy Gomis, enlisted Ndiouga Dieng — the subject of this tribute — to fill his shoes. Dieng was an active member until his death in 2016. (He was replaced by his son for this recording.) Founding guitarist Barthelemy Attisso, from Togo, also left to pursue his law career full-time. Sidibe, Gomis, saxophonists Issa Cissoko and Thierno Koite, and longtime rhythm section — bassist Charlie Ndiaye and conguero Mountaga Koite — remain the core. (Sidibe also plays timbales.) New rhythm guitarist Yahya Fall (Etoile de Dakar) joins the section with Oumar Sow and Rene Sowatche. For the first time in their history, they have a kora player in Abdouleye Cissoko, and the trademark sax section gets a boost in the bottom end from new trombonist Wilfried Zinzou.

This version of the band doesn’t burn so much as it simmers, and it’s a wonderful thing. On opener “Foulo,” the interplay between guitars and kora creates a gentle sway. The horns and percussion don’t strut, they slide. The Casamance vocalists glide over the top of the rhythm section, creating a great vibe for dancing or romancing. Following suit is the single “Fayinkounko,” with its R&B-styled horn lines, hypnotic percussion, and bubbling dubwise bass. The stringed instruments all trade places while painting the tune’s frame. “Natalia” is an Afro-Cuban son at heart, with sultry saxophone exchanges and punchy guitars and drums kissed by Cissoko’s bright kora to create contrast. Former Baobab member and African singing superstar Thione Seck rejoins the band in order to reprise his first hit with them in a smoking version of “Sey.” Likewise, Cheikh Lo also guests on “Magnokouto,” a gorgeous marriage of Northern Senegalese pop and pachanga. “Caravana” weds a rhumba-esque bolero to sweet griot soul. In sum, Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng may delineate a new phase for this band in the studio, but the music on offer is satisfying; it’s deeper and wider and the elements of joy are untouched by time. And make no mistake, it still slides down the spine toward the belly to create an almost irresistible temptation to dance.

Orchestra Baobab – Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng (2017)

(Sidibe also plays timbales.) To LA via Portland Oregon, Rare Monk took over Silverlake Lounge with their musical, ambient experimental indie rock.‘Happy Haunting’ opens the album with a bright, cheerful yet mysterious sound. The heavy instrumentation makes the voice just another instrument, an advanced skill only few bands master, where the guitars and production are more than an accompaniment but the large bulk of the song.
