Orchestra Djamal | Mazhariphone Cassette

Confession: I went *back* to Nassem Halal Meat and Mediterranean Grocery here in Astoria, and, after a long conversation with Houssain, found another 40 grime-encrusted cassettes hidden in Nassem's nooks and crannies. Well, technically 38, as two of them were duplicates of a Zehouani tape I'd already picked up, but which was too old and worn to play. These cassettes come from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, and United Arab Emirates. As you've already suspected: Today's offering is from that last haul.

Thanks to the supercollector known as Mehdi J Blige, we know this is by Orchestra Djamal (or Jamal). Thanks to the J-card, we know the publisher is Mazhariphone. Thanks to our ears, we believe this might be the single most psychedelic cassette we've ever heard from al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah.

It's possible that this is the same Orchestra Jamal as in this video:

The sound is vaguely similar and the lead vocal is in the same youthful ballpark as on the tape. Speaking of which, let's talk about the tape in depth.

Orchestra%2BDjamal%2BSide%2BA.jpg

Side 1 kicks off with a plaintive, haunting string solo, aching and bending upward, until it opens a window for the lead male's voice, and a guitar that lays down a soft-strummed, spider-web thin scaffolding reminiscent of Omar Korshid at his most subtle. The kid's voice, as you'd gather from the cover above, is youthful, almost feminine. He starts off reciting and, as the track develops, begins to sing. At which point, any concern I had that this might be some kind of novelty or vanity project evaporates. The kid has soul. Deep, lived soul.

Just shy of the two-minute mark, the percussion and some sort of barely perceptible keyboard kick in. The drums -- which are nearly isolated in the mid-to-left-hand channel -- sound like a Moroccan Jaki Liebezeit is taking them out for a test drive. I have never, never-ever, heard a kit being played like this on a Moroccan recording. (If we're lucky, Tim might let us know whether they strike his more acutely trained ears as unusual.) The guitar lopes along, breaking out into occasional fuzz-toned fills.

The second track is where things start to get mind-melty. I don't know the specific instrument that opens the track, but it's some form of keyboard or synthesizer, and very trippy. The strings and Jaki Liebezeit kit kick in, followed by a sudden trill of mechanized ululation that swooshes across the sonic landscape. The kid and an adult male chorus trade phrases.

This is not psychedelic in the normative sense. The architecture feels rooted squarely in Moroccan chaabi; it's in the fills and trills where things get freaky.

Orchestra%2BDjamal%2BSide%2BB.jpg

And it's on Side 2 that the psychedelia gets turned up, especially the second and final track. I'm not going to attempt to describe it, other than to note that the synthesizer and guitar do things in this 11+ minute scorcher -- and we're still *technically* talking fills -- that make my head spin.

And perhaps, dear reader, your head as well?

The Galileo 7 – Tear Your Minds Wide Open! (2017)

$

320 kbps | 104 MB | LINKS

Prior perception is a right nause, especially when it comes to The Galileo 7. This Kentish quartet have now been kicking out keen psych-pop nuggets since 2010, over the course of four albums and several 45s, but vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Allan Crockford’s illustrious past and parallel present, as bassist with a roll call of the greatest British bands of the past 30+ years – The Prisoners, The James Taylor Quartet, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares, Graham Day & The Forefathers – seems to have, weirdly, done ’em no favours. And in an age when peeps of a certain age are going goo-goo googly-eyed over the XTC back catalogue, rediscovering all manner of 60s psych-pop and garage treats, and lionising such moderne combos as Thee Oh Sees and Tame Impala, that the Galileo 7 haven’t reaped comparable plaudits seems just plain stoopid…

French rock’n’roll maven Phillippe Migrenne, the former manager of Jesse ‘Hammersmith Gorillas’ Hector AND Tav Falco, is a hard fella to impress and he recently asked whether I’d seen the Galileo 7, as he caught ‘em by chance in Paris and had been blown away – “I mean,” he said, “there aren’t many bands who can casually knock off a brilliant version of ‘Astonomy Domine’…” That should give you some idea of Allan’s six-string prowess, and what’s more he’s got the vox and songwriting chops to go with it. Of course, moving from bass to centre stage is really just completing the circle, Allan having initially been the embryonic Prisoners’ guitarist, with Graham Day holding down the bottom end, and he also played six-string with Johnny & The Bandits, Goodchilde and The Stabilisers.

But enough of this after-the-fact justification, tossing the weight of pedigree aside, and hearing the Galileo 7 with fresh lugs, they’re a hell of a combo. This, their fifth album (counting the scorching “Live-o-Graphic” set), sounds like the work of a quartet of twenty-somethings – it’s high-energy, psychedelic garage rock’n’roll, replete with catchy, memorable tunes, seriously gnarly guitar, darkly humourous lyrics, four-part harmonies, Viv’s searing organ, Paul’s pin-point bass work and gloriously crash, bang, wallop drums, in a Keith Moon meets Thom Mooney (The Nazz) vein. The latter comes courtesy of longtime Galileo 7 bassist Mole (Embrooks / Higher State / State Records), whose shift to the drum seat has really kicked everything up a notch – his dynamite sticksmanship and stellar backing vox really bring out the best in the band – from the kinetic opener, “Cold Hearted Stowaway”, to the vinyl album’s elegiac closing track, “Nobody Knows Anything”, they’re firing on all cylinders.

Henry Jamison – The Wilds (2017)

320 kbps | 101 MB | LINKS

The gents behind Color Study seem to be carving out a niche for the recording studio, record label and artist management company as a go-to creative space for folktronica artists. For instance, Boston duo Tall Heights tracked multiple sessions at the boutique shop in Goshen. More recently, Burlington’s Henry Jamison recorded and produced his debut LP, The Wilds, with Color Study’s Ethan West and Spencer Kelley.

The narrative surrounding Jamison is that he is the progeny of many celebrated writers, including George Frederick Root, who famously penned the Civil War-era anthem “The Battle Cry of Freedom.” While that’s certainly notable, it’s not exactly interesting, nor does it have any real bearing on who Jamison is as a songwriter generations later. Fortunately, The Wilds should give curious listeners a pretty good idea.

What is most obvious throughout these gorgeously produced 12 tracks is that Jamison lingers, most often on seemingly immaterial moments, memories and places. This could be a nonstarter for fussy listeners. His musings and recollections seem so utterly real and personal that they can be more alienating than inviting and sometimes fail to convince us that his self-seriousness is warranted.

But there’s a lot to love about this record, too. The songwriter masterfully plays every instrument, including synths/keys, drums, guitar and banjo. He and sonic wizards West and Kelley sculpt a symbiotic fantasyland where organic meets synthetic. Jamison’s James Blake-esque electro-quietude wouldn’t be as savory without the levity of his banjo pickin’.
