There was something in the air in the urban corners of late ‘60s Japan. Student protests and a rising youth culture gave way to the angura (short for “underground) movement that thrived on subverting traditions of the post-war years. Rejection of the Beatlemania-inspired Group Sounds and the squeaky clean College Folk movements led the rise of what came to be known in Japan as “New Music,” where authenticity mattered more than replicating the sounds of their idols.

Some of the most influential figures in Japanese pop music emerged from this vital period, yet very little of their work has ever been released or heard outside of Japan, until now. Light In The Attic is thrilled to present Even a Tree Can Shed Tears, the inaugural release in the label’s Japan Archival Series. This is the first-ever, fully licensed collection of essential Japanese folk and rock songs from the peak years of the angura movement to reach Western audiences.

In mid-to-late 1960s Tokyo, young musicians and college students were drawn to Shibuya’s Dogenzaka district for the jazz and rock kissas, or cafes, that dotted its winding hilly streets. Some of these spaces doubled as performance venues, providing a stage for local regulars like Hachimitsu Pie with their The Band-like ragged Americana, Tetsuo Saito with his spacey philosophical folk, and the influential Happy End, who successfully married the unique cadences of the Japanese language to the rhythms of the American West Coast. For many years Dogenzaka remained a center of the city’s “New Music” scene.

Meanwhile a different kind of music subculture was beginning to emerge in the Kansai region around Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. Far more political than their eastern counterparts, many of the Kansai-based “underground” artists began in the realm of protest folk music. They include Takashi Nishioka and his progressive folk collective Itsutsu No Akai Fuusen, the “Japanese Joni Mitchell” Sachiko Kanenobu, and The Dylan II, whose members ran The Dylan cafe in Osaka, which became a hub for the scene.

Even a Tree Can Shed Tears also includes the bluesy avant-garde stylings of Maki Asakawa, future Sadistic Mika Band founder Kazuhiko Kato with his fuzzy, progressive psychedelia, the beatnik acid folk of Masato Minami, and the intimate living room folk of Kenji Endo.

The 11-track LP is a mix of new and old songs, all arranged with the rich undertones of the Symphony serving as Isakov’s backing band. “Liars” begins quietly, with his swirling acoustic guitar delivering the broody ballad we’ve come to expect, only subtly enhanced with the pluck of orchestral strings that slowly crescendo into something far more bracing and grand.

Africa Airways FourAfrica Seven released the latest edition of their Africa Airways series: Disco Funk Touchdown 1976-1983. The 10-track compilation follows Africa Airways One: Funk Connection 1973-1980, Two: Funk Departures 1973-1982, and Three: The Afro-Psych Excursion 1972-1984.
Featuring sounds from across the continent, highlights include Manu Dibango’s solar sax and xylophone boogie ‘Sun Explosion’, and The Monstar’s fiercely funky, chant-filled bonanza ‘Funny Saga (No Strings Edit)’.
…”Your flight opens with a punchy disco funk assault from Paris based Cameroonian Tala AM. Here with his drive bass and guitar funk riff 1981 stomper “Get Up Tchmassi”. Next up and staying with the Cameroonian connection…

…is Eko with “Bowaa Mba Ngebe”. The lyrics talk of accomplishing the things in life for your family and yourself. The sweeping strings and gloriously uplifting music matching the sentiments of the words perfectly. Uta Bella began singing in the 60’s and by the time disco hit in the 70’s she was already established a singer in her native Cameroon, here the locked on groove of “Nassa Nassa” is a perfect snapshot of the sound and the African disco times.

Charly Kingson (cousin of Manu Dibango) is next with his “Nimele Bolo”. Recorded in Germany with the cream of Munich’s session musicians the bass synth is out in force on this one. Punchy brass, rock solid grooves and jazzy Rhodes add all the right ingredients for a fine disco synth excursion. Next is the musical heavyweight from Cameroon cousin Manu with his 1978 Disco, jazz funk masterpiece “Sun Explosion”.

Side two opens with a blast of Elvis Kemayo and his piano and guitar funk bomb “Biram”. Next Momo Joseph gives us “Africain”. Best known in France as an actor, this disco funk groover was released on his self pressed LP “War For Ground” in 1983. A true gem indeed. Nigerian, ex Funkees member Jake Sollo is next with “Tinni Yanana”. Recorded in the UK in 83 its slick and smooth with a hint of “at the car wash” groove. Pierre Didy Tchakounte follows on with his soul funk ‘golden years’ style groover “Soul Magabe”. Produced by one of our favourite Parisian producers Slim Pezin. We close off our journey with the tribal chant disco-funk special from the Monstars “Funny Saga”.
