Before the release of his first album, a 20 year old Bob Dylan made his way to Pacifica Radio WBAI 99.5 FM in March of 1962. Host Cynthia Gooding wasn’t quite sure what to make of this incredibly young OLD SOUL… Bob Dylan performed one of a kind live versions of some of his favorite Blues and Roots Music tunes. He also performs a few originals for the first time on radio.

Αν και αποφεύγω όπως ο διάβολος το λιβάνι τους ανώφελους παραλληλισμούς, σκέφτομαι τι θα σήμαινε για το ελληνικό τραγούδι της δεκαετίας του ’60, ας πούμε, το να εμφανιζόταν από το πουθενά και σε μια ηλικία εξήντα-βάλε, ένας άγνωστος τραγουδοποιός τού λαϊκού τού επιπέδου τού Καλδάρα. Ως κάτι τέτοιο υποθετικό ανάλογο χαιρετίστηκε η περίπτωση του Mance Lipscomb στα αμερικανικά blues sixties.

Ο Lipscombυπήρξε, κατά πρώτον, μια κινητή ηχοθήκη της προφορικής παράδοσης, αφού ο ίδιος είχε διασώσει δεκάδες λαϊκά τραγούδια και, κατά δεύτερον, ένας όλο φωτιά performer, υπερήφανος αλλά όχι κομπάζων για όσους τον γνώρισαν (έτσι γράφουν τα βιβλία), ο οποίος σχολίαζε ή παρατηρούσε τραγουδώντας.

Από εκείνους τους τύπους των ανθρώπων, που μιλάνε στη ζωή κοιτώντας την κατάματα, ο Mance Lipscomb έζησε στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος τού βίου του σε ξένα κτήματα, καρπούμενος μέρος των σοδειών τις οποίες παρήγαγε. Μάλιστα, ακόμη και όταν τον ανακάλυψε ο Mack McCormick σε κάποια φυτεία του Texas στις αρχές του ’60, ο Lipscomb θεώρησε πως ο «όρκος» του να μείνει πιστός στη γη δεν θα μπορούσε με τίποτα να παραβλεφθεί, μπροστά στη δόξα μιας εφήμερης μπίζνας. Περιττό να πούμε πως τα άλμπουμ που πρόλαβε να εκδώσει μέσα στα δέκα πέντε χρόνια της ηχογραφικής περιπέτειάς του θα παραμένουν, ες αεί, μνημεία τού πιο ανόθευτου λαϊκού μουσικού πολιτισμού.

Το συντριπτικό μέρος των εγγραφών του Mance Lipscomb έγινε για λογαριασμό της εταιρείας Arhoolieτου Chris Strachwitz. Μάλιστα, ο πολωνός εμιγκρές ξεκίνησε την εταιρία του με το θρυλικό άλμπουμ τού Lipscomb “Texas Sharecropperand Songster”, εκεί όπου ακούστηκαν για πρώτη φορά οι εκδοχές των “Sugar babe”, “Going down slow”, “Baby please don’t go”, “Jack O’ Diamonds” και “Ella Speed”.

Άψογος τραγουδιστής και επίσης εξαίρετος κιθαρίστας, ο Lipscomb θα πεθάνει στην πόλη που γεννήθηκε, στην Navasotaτου Τέξας, την οποίαν, εξάλλου, ελάχιστες φορές εγκατέλειψε.

Να σημειώσουμε, τέλος, πως ο Lipscomb εμφανίζεται στην ταινία του Ροβήρου Μανθούλη Le Blues Entre les Dents(1973) και πως η πρώτη-πρώτη εγγραφή του υπάρχει σ’ ένα LP-συλλογή της βρετανικής 77 Records – πρόκειται για την “Tom Moore’s farm”, που ηχογραφήθηκε από τους Chris Strachwitzκαι Mack McCormick την 30η Ιουνίου 1960 στη Navasota και συμπεριλήφθηκε στο άλμπουμ “A Treasury of Field Recordings Vol.2”.

La gran diva de la música de Malí, Oumou Sangaré, que llevaba 8 años sin grabar, nos entrega una obra magistral, Mogoya, bajo nuevo sello (No Format!), con sonidos más modernos y bailables, con la dosis justa de electrónica para crear unas atmósferas donde se mantienen las esencias de la música de la región de Wassoulou, de la que Oumou Sangaré es una de sus grandes embajadoras.
Al igual que en sus trabajos anteriores, Sangaré compone todas las canciones, que continúan abordando lo que sus oyentes esperan de ella, teniendo en cuenta que la cantante de Malí es el modelo para una generación de mujeres africanas: feminista, empresaria, arraigada en la tradición y abierta a nuevas influencias. Mogoya se basa en el poder crudo de la voz Oumou, combinando instrumentos tradicionales africanos –n´goni (arpa), karignan (raspador de metal) y percusión de calabaza– con guitarra eléctrica, bajo, teclados, sintetizadores y el legendario Tony Allen en la batería.
El primer tema, "Bena Bena", trata de la ingratitud o de la falta de aprecio de la gente de hoy en día. El baterista nigeriano Tony Allen es artista invitado en el anti-suicidio "Yere Faga" y el electrificante "Fadjamou", que enfatiza la importancia de honrar el apellido y la ascendencia.

"Mali Niale" confía en la música acústica folclórica que Sangaré representa tan bien, y es un llamamiento para que la diáspora maliense regrese a casa para marcar una diferencia en el futuro del país. Benogo Diaketé interpreta el n´goni en "Kamelemba", junto a Guimba Koyaté, quien toca la guitarra eléctrica con un estilo y técnica particularísima, en una canción que tiene un ángulo de orientación parental, ya que es una advertencia severa para que las jóvenes desconfíen de determinados tipos de hombres.
Hay un sabor popular de baile afro-pop en "Djoukourou" que elogia la amistad y el sistema de apoyo familiar, mientras que "Kounkoun" predica sobre la impropiedad de la calumnia y el chisme. La madre de Sangaré, Aminata Diaknite, es reconocida y alabada por "Minata Waraba", interpretada con un arreglo maliense reconocible.
Oumou Sangaré es conocida como el "pájaro cantor de Wassoulou", que es su hogar ancestral y espiritual y cuya herencia musical defiende. Sangaré ha construido su reputación no en la cantidad de discos que ha producido sino en la calidad y significado de su mensaje. Como un modelo querido y emulado, ella representa a las mujeres africanas con dignidad y elegancia, exigiendo el respeto que merecen.

The Jet Plane and Oxbow tour was one of our shortest, but also one of the most intense and rewarding; it was certainly the loudest (and for good reason). 2016 seems far away now.

Most of these recordings come from a sweaty, hometown-ish show at the Croc in Seattle, recorded by Matthew Barnhart (who also recorded Rook back in 2007). “You As You Were” comes from Islington Assembly Hall in London, recorded by Jay Demko (who ran live sound and emotional support for us for much of the year). It was still the old pre-Brexit UK way back then, and a great place for a show; when I fired my laser gloves at the hall’s enormous mirror ball, the beams skittered all over the room.

The other songs come from live moments where there wasn’t an audience. The first “Radio Silence” is from an early-morning live performance on KUTX in Austin when I wasn’t very awake; “Only Child” is a one-mic demo I made with Emily Lee at home in New York, “Wildlife in America” comes from a live performance on XM radio in DC, and “Kick in the Eye” is a Bauhaus cover we did for the AV Club’s Undercover series, in the same room in their Chicago office where we played a full live take of Bowie’s Lodger album that afternoon. (Sold separately). Lucas heroically mixed all this stuff in Austin months later.

Being on stage is like being in a trance; I don’t remember much of the shows themselves when we’re done, besides a huge surge of relief when nothing goes wrong. But I do remember more of the drives on this tour than usual. One in particular, when Sadie and I carted the van back to Texas after the last show of the first US tour in Portland, stands out; I remember rocketing through snow in Utah late at night, going about 80 with my eyes drilled into the taillights of the car ahead and my knuckles locked in place on the wheel.

The next day we outran the storm, took the van way up on the ridge at the Bears Ears and more or less camped in it. I woke up freezing and mummified in the driver’s seat to see that the snow had caught up with us again, and inched down the mountain with both feet on the brake. Then I drove down the Moqui dugway, without telling Sadie what that was in advance; it’s one of the best stretches of road in the US, even when there aren’t cascades of snow pouring off the Cedar Mesa.

There was a lot of good thinking time on that drive. The country was very beautiful, everywhere, all through northern New Mexico, west Texas. I can’t think of another time when I’ve felt that so keenly.
