BLUES REVIVAL 31: TOMMY McCLENNAN (1905-1961)

a678.jpg
Να πούμε πως το πιο γνωστό τραγούδι του Tommy McClennan ήταν το “Cross cut saw blues” (ηχογράφηση στο Σικάγο, την 15η Σεπτεμβρίου 1941), που έγινε στάνταρντ από τα sixties και μετά, ενώ το δικό του “New highway No. 51” το τραγούδησε ο Bob Dylan στο πρώτο LPτου [Columbia, 1962] ως “Highway 51”.

Monoswezi – A Je (2017)

$

MonosweziRemember a year or two ago when everyone was talking about the Danish concept of hygge, that aesthetic based around the concept of coziness and wool sweaters and fireplaces? It was mostly a marketing ploy, to be sure, but it spoke to the human love for simple comforts and genuine warmth, and long after people forget what hygge is, they will long for those things. They should, then, look no further than Monoswezi’s A Je, a gentle album full of earthy acoustic music with a loving global feel to it. Made up of members from Mozambique, Norway, Sweden, and Zimbabwe (the group’s name comes from the first few letters of each nation), Monoswezi combines Scandinavian and African influences into what could loosely be called jazz, but which goes well…

102 MB  320 ** FLAC

…outside the box of what most people think jazz is. In fact, Monoswezi travels far beyond the group’s quartet of homelands on this latest album, incorporating the Malian ngoni, the Indian harmonium, and the African-American banjo into the seamless mix of musical styles.

Opening track “Loko U Muka” starts off with a string of slow, uplifting harmonium notes that emulate the ecstatic spirit of the Sufi qawwali musical form, albeit in slow motion. Soon, banjo and mbira join in, and the piece unfolds in a sunrise of sweet harmonies, setting forth a path of positive vibes for the rest of the album. Monoswezi heads straight down that path with pieces like title track “A Je”, where saxophones underscore a steadily moving tune, and hypnotic “Nyuchi”, where the singers of Monoswezi come together in a cheerful chorus. It all culminates in “C’est Comme Ça” at the end of the album, a rhythmic dance track that lets all the instruments get heavy as they reach a satisfying conclusion.

Monoswezi never treads into any discord or strangeness on A Je. Where the group does surprise is in its ability to combine so many elements from so many places into an uncontroversially lovely whole, to pull instruments from four continents and make music that sounds as natural as the seas that flow between them. Malian guest musician Sidiki Camara undoubtedly makes this transcontinental exchange an easier one; his calabash and ngoni offer tones that are delicate enough to mesh with every other instrument and voice on the recording. Few instruments evoke starlight like the harp-like ngoni, and in the multicultural context of Monoswezi, it’s a reminder that no matter how far you travel on Earth — from Mozambique and Zimbabwe to Sweden and Norway and back again — the same light shines down all across the planet.

Ultimately, A Je does not work to challenge your ears or your mind with the kind of experimentation often associated with jazz, the kind that requires hard work to appreciate on a purely sensory level. Instead, Monoswezi plays music for the open mind, each piece part of a euphonious whole, different backgrounds coming together to tell a fresh, new story.

OCS – Memory of a Cut Off Head (2017)

61Y6nKVU5TL._SS500.jpg320 kbps | 105 MB | LINKS

When OCS originated in 1997, it was the music of a goblin. That’s what John Dwyer recently likened his younger self to on Marc Maron’s “WTF?” podcast, explaining how all the recreational drugs he took alongside his singing-saw-playing friend Patrick Mullins—with the curious goal of creating “the quietest songs we could”—would render him constantly breathing through his mouth. Yes, the writhing, bug-eyed garage-rock band known most frequently as Thee Oh Sees was for many early years a whispering freak-folk expedition. Plenty of other things have since changed for Dwyer. His track record at that time told a story of several diverse endeavors rather than the one of an exhaustingly prolific primary project, for which he’s now known. And, as the 43-year-old will tell you today, he’s dialed back his drugs.

For the project’s 20th LP in 20 years (and the 100th album for Dwyer’s own Castle Face Records), he returns to both its original name stylization and restrained aura for the first time in over a decade. Memory of a Cut Off Head essentially leaves the amps at home. Instead, it reverses hard into baroque, acoustic, and otherwise more delicate songs of a softer, slower psychedelic vein. The intensity, much like the spelling, is reduced by 70%.

If Memory is another new page for OCS, it is the special-thanks page. Coming amid a fast-as-ever recording clip—that’s four Dwyer LPs in 16 months, a merciless pace even for him—Memory honors the project’s history. It acknowledges strains of folk music that are less obviously fundamental to shaping the wilder iterations of Thee Oh Sees, and it honors some of the people who helped shape their store. There are horn arrangements by his friend and pupil Mikal Cronin. Memory also marks the returns of Mullins on singing saw and singer/keyboardist Brigid Dawson, the closest complementing presence Dwyer has ever had in the band. The album is as much hers as it is his, and she takes the reins on its superior second half.

Roberto Fonseca – ABUC (2016)

Roberto%2BFonseca%2B-%2BAbuc_front.jpg

Not to be confused with The Steel Wheels, Steeldrivers, Steelism or other bands that have similar names, this is the debut album from this Nashville-based rock band, The Steel Woods. They are a mixture of Southern styles, embracing all pillars of those genres and more. Some have dubbed them a Southern rock band but they are more diverse than that. There’s even a heavy metal influence as they render a Black Sabbath tune.
Straw in the Wind is a mix of originals and covers by the group’s co-founders, both multi-instrumentalists. Wes Bayliss is the lead singer with soulful pipes like Chris Stapleton, while guitarist Jason “Rowdy” Cope brings the outlaw spirit, having played guitar in Jamey Johnson’s band for nine years. The two met while performing on the same bill in a Nashville club. In addition to their own tunes, besides the aforementioned cover, they interpret songs by Darrell Scott and Brent Cobb. Drummer Jay Tooke and bassist Johnny Stanton provide the rhythm.
