Limited seven disc (six CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) set. These Dreams Will Never Sleep, The Best Of, 1976-2015 celebrates the incredible 40 year career of one of Britain’s most seminal songwriters – Graham Parker. The 124 track box consists of three anthology discs with some of Graham’s best loved recorded work as a solo artist and with The Rumour – one of the UK’s pioneering pre-punk bands. The Live At The BBC 19 track disc includes very rare, choice picks from Graham Parker & The Rumour’s 1979 Live At Hammersmith Odeon show, and Live From BBC Sight and Sound in 1977. Discs five and six are Live From The London Forum, these never before heard recordings are taken from Graham Parker & The Rumour’s last ever live show in 2015, and also feature the legendary Rumour Brass Section for the first time since 1980. The whopping 34 track DVD is a perfect blend of old and new. A specially recorded live show taken from Graham Parker & The Rumour’s last ever tour, last year at The Brook in Southampton makes up the first 21 tracks, and this is followed by rare archive solo performances in the late 70’s on TV shows including Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test. Alongside this, there is a 36 page hardcover book, featuring a new interview with Graham and an overview written by Holly A. Hughes, as well as a poster and three postcards.

Μπορεί το “Soul Blossom”[Ikaros Records, 2017] να είναι το πρώτο LP των Rosewood Brothers δεν είναι όμως και η παρθενική εμφάνισή τους στη δισκογραφία, αφού έχουν προηγηθεί ένα private mini-CD το 2011 κι ένα 10ιντσο το 2012. Άρα μιλάμε, πια, για την τρίτη απόπειρα του αθηναϊκού γκρουπ, και για την πιο ολοκληρωμένη συγχρόνως, να συστηθεί σ’ ένα ακόμη πιο ευρύ ακροατήριο μ’ ένα καθαρό rock άλμπουμ – έτσι όπως εννοούν, χοντρικά, την ροκ καθαρότητα στον αμερικανικό Νότο των seventies… ZZ Top και τέτοια. Rock και blues-rock με άλλα λόγια, ανακατεμένο με στοιχεία southern μπαλάντας, στηριγμένο στα γερά φωνητικά και στις δυναμικές κιθάρες. Και δεν είναι μόνον αυτά, καθώς στο “Soul Blossom” ανιχνεύονται ακόμη και funkyστοιχεία, οπότε ο Νότος στην περίπτωσή μας είναι… ακόμη πιο πλήρης.

Μέλη των Rosewood Brothersείναι οι Ιωσήφ Κυρίτσης φωνή, κιθάρες, ντόμπρο, κρουστά, Γιώργος Κατσάνος κιθάρες, πλήκτρα, φυσαρμόνικα, κρουστά, μαντολίνο, Γιάννης Κατσάνος μπάσο, Νίκος Κώνστας κιθάρες και Δημήτρης Αζοράκος ντραμς. Δίπλα σ’ αυτή τη βασική πεντάδα στέκονται κάμποσοι ακόμη μουσικοί (σε φωνητικά, κρουστά και πλήκτρα), δημιουργώντας, όλοι μαζί (μαζί με τους βασικούς εννοώ), τον ήχο των Rosewood, που είναι στιβαρός και αποφασιστικός, δίχως περφεξιονισμούς και στούντιο-κόλπα. Μου κάνει εντύπωση, θέλω να πω, αυτή η κατεύθυνση του γκρουπ, που δεν είναι καθόλου συνηθισμένη στην Ελλάδα (ποτέ δεν ήταν), παρότι αυτό ακριβώς το rock μεγάλωσε μία τουλάχιστον γενιά ακροατών (για να μην πω δυο και τρεις). Είναι το ροκ που ξεκινάει από τους Byrds των early 70s, τους Allman Brothers Band και τους ZZ Top (όπως έγραψα και λίγο πιο πάνω), για να καταλήξει μετά από διαρκείς περιπλανήσεις στους Black Crowes και στους Gov’t Mule, και σε όποιους άλλους ίσως… ακόμη πιο σημερινούς.

Εκείνο που κυριαρχεί στους Rosewood Brothers και θα πρέπει να το πω κάποια στιγμή, γιατί θα το ξεχάσω, είναι η αυτοπεποίθησή τους. Η σιγουριά πως αυτό που κάνουν είναι εκείνο που γνωρίζουν καλύτερα να κάνουν. Τα τραγούδια τους, εννοώ, είναι πολύ μεστά και ταυτοχρόνως εντελώς αβίαστα… λες και το συγκρότημα αποβάλλει εν τω γεννάσθαι κάθε στολίδι, κάθε παράταιρο στοιχείο που θα μπορούσε να παρεισφρήσει στο κυρίως σώμα της τραγουδοποιίας του μεταστρέφοντάς την. Και τούτο συμβαίνει για έναν πολύ απλό λόγο. Γιατί το blues είναι η βάση των τραγουδιών των Rosewood Brothers. Και όταν πατάς γερά στο bluesδεν υπάρχει ποτέ περίπτωση να χαθείς ή ν’ αστοχήσεις.

Δεν υπάρχει τραγούδι που να ξεχωρίζει στο “Soul Blossom”, που να εξέχει έναντι των άλλων, δεν υπάρχει η «επιτυχία». Όλα τα κομμάτια είναι συνειδητά και οδηγημένα από μια γραμμή, με πολύ συγκεκριμένες, κάθε φορά, αλλαγές ή προσθαφαιρέσεις. Αλλού πιο rock, αλλού πιο blues, αλλού με κάποια funky vibes, πάντα όμως με το ίδιο γερό τραγούδισμα και πάντα σ’ ένα μέσο τέμπο, που επιτρέπει το πάκτωμα της μελωδίας, την ανάπτυξη των riffs, τα μετρημένα σόλι.

Το “Soul Blossom” είναι ένα άλμπουμ από το οποίο… όσα ζητάς τα παίρνεις.

For his third full-length release of 2017, and fourth overall counting a solo EP — seriously, slow down, man! — Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek collaborated with Sean Yeaton, a musician and writer best known for playing bass in Brooklyn garage punks Parquet Courts. Yellow Kitchen doesn’t come close to sounding like that group, however. Instead of frantic, noisy post-punk, the music is cold and abstract, serving as a dreamlike, sometimes distant background for Kozelek’s autobiographical rants. The album opens with a bit of creeping Philip Glass-inspired minimalism, filled with rumbling pianos and set to a metronomic pulse. Subsequent tracks switch between avant-garde keyboard passages and ragged lo-fi indie rock, particularly “No Christmas Like This.” Lyrically, Kozelek is treading the same territory as his other 2016-2017 releases. He’s concerned about the results of the 2016 election and the state of society, but more concerned about his own health and aging process. He addresses why he doesn’t write the way he used to back in the ’90s, and references celebrity deaths, movies he’s watched, and restaurants he’s eaten at. He also continues to break the fourth wall on “Somebody’s Favorite Song,” during which he basically documents the songwriting process, stating that he’s not really sure what the song’s going to be about. He decides that it’s going to end up being exactly four minutes long, but after a few seconds of silence it starts again, and he continues rambling about conversations he’s had with people. Breaking from all of this is clear highlight “The Reasons I Love You,” an awkward but cute ditty directed at Kozelek’s girlfriend, set to a click track, a whistling kettle, and a comforting acoustic guitar riff. At only 41 minutes, the release is short and succinct compared to many of Kozelek’s prior non-covers albums, which might come as a relief to some listeners. Even though the music is a bit more experimental, the effect is much the same. It’s worth a listen if you enjoyed any of those releases, but otherwise it won’t change your mind about Kozelek and the direction his music has taken.

Comme je n'avais pas d'idée pour cette fin d'année et que je collectionne les cds "Carrère" ( pas tous, hein ! ) j'avais donc sous la main un disque de Gérard Berliner ( on en trouve nulle part ! c'est dingue !) tout ça parce que j'ai reçu un gmail me disant que ce serait pas mal de l’intégrer dans nos fichiers. Tegenwoordig schrikken we niet zo snel meer, toen dit uitkwam,
in 1983 echter, waren we wel ietwat overdonderd. Tamelijk expi-
rimentele sound van Mark Stewart and Maffia. Nog zo’n Adrian
Sherwood produktie waar de stukken vanaf springen. Het is nu
ondertussen pure cult geworden, vet goed geluid, luister zelf.
De laatste track is juist weer aktueel geworden,
dank je Trump..

Nowadays we don’t get shocked that easy anymore, when this
came out in 1983 however, it was rather overwhelming. Quite
experimental sound by Mark Stewart and Maffia. Another Adrian
Sherwood production, violently good stuff. It became a pure
cult record in the mean time, awesome good sound, listen.
The final track just became relevant again, thanx Trump..

On Bluegrass Fiddler, she has drawn on some jewels from the deep American fiddle tradition, without relying on the overplayed standards that we hear at many of the competitions. She even brings forward a couple of strong new pieces of her own, Sandridge, an easy-going tune in G, and Honeycat Hornpipe, a stately number in E, either of which would have been right at home on a Baker LP from the ’70s.

The album starts with Laughing Boy, with strong support from Kurt Stephenson on banjo and David McLaughlin on mandolin, followed by Timmie Martin’s JC’s Hornpipe, another elegant tune in more of a midwestern style. There’s also a tasty version of Soppin’ The Gravy which rips along at a brisk pace with nice mandolin from Casey Campbell. Stephenson’s banjo really sparkles on this one, as does Logston’s fiery fiddle.
