THE SNAILS ένα εξαιρετικό garage ελληνικό γκρουπ
Γι’ αυτό το LPπια, το “Dr. Acid” [Anazitisi Records] των έξοχων Snails, είχα γράψει πριν κάτι μήνες (25 Φεβ. 2017), όταν είχε φθάσει στα χέρια μου ένα CD τους. Για να θυμηθούμε εκείνα τα… παλαιά λόγια.

Πριν λίγες μέρες έλαβα ένα CD (ή CD-R). Σκέτο δισκάκι χωρίς cover, εξώφυλλα, οπισθόφυλλα και λοιπά, παρά με δύο τίτλους μόνο γραμμένους πάνω του… The Snails “Dr. Acid”. Ευτυχώς, που υπάρχει, είπα μέσα μου, και στο bandcamp κι έτσι μπορώ να δω το track listκι ίσως και καμμιάν ακόμη πληροφορία. Τελικώς, εκείνο που είδα ήταν οι τίτλοι των 14 tracks, καθώς και οι guests που συμμετέχουν στην εγγραφή – σε κάποιο track φωνή ο Δημήτρης Μπελενιώτης από τους Cardinals, σε κάποια άλλα farfisa η Eve Deville από τις Meanie Genies και ο Δημήτρης Μεγεντισίδης από τους Yesterday’s Thoughts, θερεμίνη ο Gew-Gaw, κιθάρες ο Δημήτρης Ντελής… Πουθενά δεν είδα όμως τα μέλη των Snails, οπότε ας υποθέσω πως έχουμε να κάνουμε με τους Chris φωνή, κιθάρα, Lampros K. κιθάρα, φωνητικά, Dimitris μπάσο και Anestis ντραμς, φωνητικά. Τέλος πάντων… δεν έχουν και τη μεγαλύτερη σημασία όλα τούτα, αφού πάντα το προκείμενο, η μουσική και τα τραγούδια του αθηναϊκού garage γκρουπ εννοώ, θα είναι εκείνο που θα εξέχει.
Τα τραγούδια των Snails είναι πολύ καλά, σε γενικές γραμμές, αν και εδώ δεν έχουμε τόσο… απολύτως πιστό garage-punk, όπως είχαμε σε πιο παλιές ηχογραφήσεις τους. Υπάρχει βεβαίως η sixties σχετική αφετηρία, αλλά το πράγμα απλώνεται πιο πολύ, με σαφείς αναφορές σε πιο... ψυχεδελικά πράγματα, και με συνολική ηχητική διευθέτηση πιο αναβιωτική και πιο eighties.
Το “Dr. Acid” περιλαμβάνει, όπως γράψαμε και πιο πάνω, 14 tracks, εκ των οποίων και τα 14 είναι καλά. Μερικά βέβαια είναι πολύ καλά, ή και φοβερά και αυτά βρίσκονται εκεί προς τη μέση, όταν οι… Έλληνες Vietnam Veterans πραγματικά μεγαλουργούν στα “The burning boy”, “Dr. Acid”, “Falling down”, “I’m on fire”, “Shadow land”, “Sunshine” και “A thousand miles”, δίχως –το ξαναλέω– να υστερεί κανένα από τα υπόλοιπα.
Ιδιαίτερη μνεία, πάντως, οφείλουμε να κάνουμε σε δύο κομμάτια: στo “I’m on fire” στο οποίο ακούμε… ψυχεδελικό μπουζούκι άψογα ενταγμένο στο γενικότερο πλάνο, όπως και στο φερώνυμο 7λεπτο “Dr. Acid”, που αποτελεί (και σαν μεγάλη διάρκεια) μιαν άλλη άποψη των Snails, σε σχέση, πάντα, με τον γκαραζοψυχεδελισμό.
Ευχή; Να κυκλοφορήσει σε LP.
Η ευχή έπιασε! Τα δέκα καλύτερα από τα δεκατέσσερα tracks εκείνου του CD«κόβονται» τώρα σε βινύλιο (400 αντίτυπα + insert με στίχους) από την Anazitisi Records. Φυσικά, σ’ αυτά τα δέκα περιλαμβάνονται όλα εκείνα τα εξαιρετικά κομμάτια, τα οποία αναφέρθηκαν πιο πάνω (“The burning boy”, “Dr. Acid”, “Falling down”, “I’m on fire”, “Shadow land”, “Sunshine”, “A thousand miles”), συν τα επίσης απολαυστικά “Other side”, “Mermaid” (ορχηστρικό) και “Overflow”.
Σε γενικές γραμμές, και για την περίπτωση του “Dr. Acid”, νομίζω πως έχουμε να κάνουμε μ’ ένα από τα καλύτερα γκαραζοψυχεδελικά LP, που ηχογραφήθηκαν ποτέ στην Ελλάδα – κάτι που αν συμβαίνει (εγώ λέω ότι συμβαίνει!) μόνο δάφνες περιποιεί για τους Snails.

Syd Barrett – Crazy Diamond [3CD Box Set Japan Edition] (2015)

A three-CD box set that enshrines Barrett’s complete recorded legacy as a solo artist. Besides including his two 1970 albums, this collection includes the 1989 compilation of unreleased material, Opel. The chief attraction of this set for Barrett fans is no less than 19 previously unreleased alternate takes from throughout his quite brief solo career. All of those alternate takes, it’s important to note, are alternate versions of songs that appear on the three previously available albums; no entirely unheard compositions were unearthed. Nonetheless, these alternate takes are more interesting listening than you might expect, for a couple of reasons. First, Barrett was so mercurial (and occasionally unfocused) in the studio that it was difficult to get him to play a song the same way twice. Second, the alternate takes are usually starker and more acoustic in nature than the official versions; they’re not better, but have interesting different slants. With some of the songs repeated two, three, or even four times, this is definitely for the hardcore fan. But it’s a beautifully produced document, with a meticulously detailed booklet, of a uniquely primitive visionary, and has many moments of charming and chilling power. It includes everything salvageable that he produced, with the exception of the Peel Sessions. It doesn’t match his work with the original Pink Floyd, but the music continues to influence and be emulated (most notably by Robyn Hitchcock), though never equaled.
