Mark Lanegan has teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood to release Black Pudding via Heavenly Recordings on 13th May.Lanegan, never one to shy away from unique collaborations, has previously worked with Isobel Campbell, Greg Dulli and as a member of The Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age and Soulsavers. ”Duke Garwood is one of my all time favorite artists,” said Lanegan. “Working with him has been one of the best experiences of my recording life.” Lanegan and Garwood met a few years ago while playing on the same bill and Garwood was a frequent opener on Lanegan’s recent European tour.
Garwood has often been described in the press as Lanegan’s “spiritual cousin across the Atlantic waters.” He has been widely praised as a master bluesman, with The Quietus saying “The combination of Garwood’s murmured vocals and the sound he gets out of his guitar – which ranges from a rolling, loose finger-picking to shuddering howls of feedback – has a hypnotic effect” and The Mirror dubbing him as “London’s leading exponent of the wheezy broke-down blues.”
Black Pudding was recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California by Justin Smith (Tegan & Sara, The Hives) and mixed by his Queens of the Stone Age associate Alain Johannes.

Ignatz’ new album consists of a hypnotic and mystical song cycle that centre around leitmotifs as despair, sobriety and the drain on his backyard. The Drain is a master piece, on which the Landen based troubadour weaves echos of South American folk music into a complex of harsh folk, shallow blues and loner psych. He flushed the crappy electronics from his early records through the drain and created room for sparse fingerpicking and mumbled singing. In the 11 songs Devens finally reveals himself as the master guitar player and song writer that he always has been.

Born in Glasgow, observing Glasgow from a distance and returning to live in Glasgow, Findlay Napier has amassed enough material to create a set which encapsulates the city. None so more so than in the opening lines of the record that follow the church bell chimes that call us together: “Up there in the graveyard where all the weirdos go.” You guess that, yes, the off kilter quality is going to be a strong feature along with more astute and poignant reflection.

…he’s gathered 11 of his own songs, some written in partnership with Boo Hewerdine and some covers of his favourite Glasgow songs. Once again the record finds him teaming up with the low key, huge impact presence of Boo Hewerdine; the duo just on acoustic guitars (Hewerdine’s the ‘high strung’ version) and some BVs from Donna Maciocia. Glasgow feels a suitably intimate and reflective collection.

From the outside in, the cover shows a typically washed out image – an almost deserted tenement street corner, a tarmac patched road in need of some council attention and a small group of kids blowing bubblegum and carrying an old lace up football (or casey as we called them). A sign of the times.

Subject matter ranges from the homeless to the shipyards, from Glasgow chip shops and onto the Old Firm derby in Julia Doonan’s Glasgow (“Streets get ready for another fight”). And gravedigging; for trivia buffs, St Anthony is the patron saint of gravediggers. Inspired by a Radio 4 documentary on the subject, the routine and the mundane are coated with a daydreamy fancy and irreverence.

The Hamish Imlach cover of Cod Liver Oil And The Orange Juice is quintessentially Scottish juxtaposed with a Blue Nile cover that evokes memories of easy halcyon student days and there’s the empathy in the perfectly match of Anna Pollock’s Marchtown (Napier notes, “I walk through Marchtown every day”). Packed with references to Glasgow locales, perhaps the most convincing are the Napier/Hewerdine period piece The Locarno, Sauciehall Street 1928 and There’s More To Building Ships. Originally a contribution to the Shake The Chains project. The customary Napier humour and contemplation tempered by a tinge of uncharacteristic, well not quite anger or rage but more of a controlled passion.

Glasgow is a mind map of an album that belongs in a ‘Scottish culture for tourists’ pack. Aside from all the usual streaming, downloading and retail outlets, it should have pride of place on the local interest shelves of all good bookshops.

Dirtmusic return for their fifth album, a full-scale collaboration with Turkish-psych visionary Murat Ertel from Baba Zula. Recorded in Istanbul, the album navigates hypnotic rhythms, cinematic atmospheres and dark political realities.

The striking figure of Murat Ertel is standing at the door of his home studio, a converted mechanic’s garage in a suburb of Istanbul. The Turkish capital is a tense and conflicted place these days, but Baba Zula’s leader and saz man is on fine form. Before him stand those current and former musical nomads, Chris Eckman and Hugo Race, guitars in hand. Dirtmusic are about to take on their latest, and perhaps most thrilling, form.

But let’s rewind a little, for Dirtmusic’s story is worth your time (although it perhaps makes more sense to talk about Dirtmusics plural).

Originally a straight-talking, mainly acoustic trio mining blues and country for 21st century gold, the band’s first happy accident was to stumble upon Tamikrest at the fabled Festival au Désert in Timbuktu in 2008. A musical love story began, running through that joyous first collaboration with Tamikrest in BKO (2010), followed by Troubles (2013) and Lion City (2014), which expanded the roster to include Ben Zabo, Samba Touré and a host of other superb Malian musicians. In the meantime, however, the Islamist takeover of Northern Mali in 2012 had darkened the sound and the songwriting, giving them a tone that continues to resonate through the new record.
