This is one groovy, bittersweet album. This is the posthumous release of Chris Porter, who was killed in a car accident on October 21, 2016. Full of full frontal country music with a huge dose of southern rock and boogie woogie. There is a whole lotta rockin’ going on, courtesy of Porter & Company. this is a great album and there are two instances of “I can’t believes” on this album: 1) I can’t believe how outrageously good it is 2) I can’t believe that they got 13 words and and ampersand on the front cover of the album. They completed both feats at the highest level.
The recording credits are a veritable “who’s who”. You got—Will Johnson (Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel, Monsters of Folk) behind the drums, and acting as producer, Shonna Tucker (Drive By Truckers, Eye Candy, Pegi Young) on bass and backing vocals, John Calvin Abney (John Moreland, Samantha Crain, Solo) behind the guitar, steel, synth, and harmonica, Chris Masterson on guitar, and Eleanor Whitmore on violin. That is quite a group of high powered players, including Chris Porter on guitar and vocals.
I think the song that comes closest to really capturing the embodiment of southern rock is Stoned In Traffic (Track 8). While the subject matter seems a bit mundane and routine (for some folks), this song is very well written and is a cross between Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Replacements. Plenty of ass kicking guitar ala Skynyrd, and plenty of cynical and humorous lyrics ala The Replacements. Again, the guitars on this song are completely raucous and flawless.
It isn’t all about the noise, Porter & The Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes can also do justice to a country song complete with twang, dark lyrics, and superb backing vocals. All those components, and more, are on Shit Got Dark (Track 7). You can tell by the title that this isn’t going to be a happy number. “Shit Got Dark” is never an expression one would utter after an event that was went perfectly. Great harmonica that ties the entire song together.
This is not a narrow minded recording. There are also sighting of some funk and jazz. They were spotted on War Paint (Track 3). This number starts off with a very infectious drum solo that is catchy as hell. Then, it immediately slithers into a great electric guitar part. The song composition is wonderful. There is nothing I would change. I almost always think to myself things that I would change on certain recordings. I honestly cannot think of anything I would change on this song, or any of the songs on this album. There is an old adage—“Don’t dick with perfection”. And no one did.
Certainly, the fact that no one will be able to hear these songs performed by their creator is disheartening and sad. However, the album is the next best thing to being there, and that means Chris will live forever. And it is warranted for many reasons, most notably is this album which is one of the best in recent times.

DIETER ILG: B-A-C-H [9844-2 ACT, 2017]
Ο αναγνωρισμένος γερμανός τζαζ-κοντραμπασίστας Dieter Ilg, μετά τον προπέρσινο «δικό του Μπετόβεν», για τον οποίον είχαμε γράψει και στο δισκορυχείον (29 Οκτ. 2015), έχει στην αγορά ένα ακόμη… κλασικό-τζαζ CD, που δεν είναι το δεύτερό του, καθότι έχουν προηγηθεί (πέραν του Beethoven) ανάλογες προσεγγίσεις του στον Wagnerκαι στον Verdi. Εδώ, στο “B-A-C-H”, ο Ilg, έχοντας δίπλα του τους Rainer Böhmπιάνο και Patrice Héral ντραμς, τα… βάζει με τον Μπαχ, από συγκεκριμένα έργα του οποίου επηρεάζεται συνθέτοντας «δικά του», τα οποία και παρουσιάζει με νέους καινούριους τίτλους.
Φυσικά η… ιστορία jazz-Bachδεν είναι σημερινή, αν σκεφτούμε πως δεκάδες προσεγγίσεις πάνω στο έργο τού μεγάλου κάντορα έχουν υπάρξει στο παρελθόν, με μερικές απ’ αυτές να θεωρούνται πλέον must. Προσεγγίσεις σαν εκείνη των Jacques Loussier/ ChristianGarros/ PierreMichelot(1959) εννοώ, μα ακόμη και των Swingle Singers(1963), The Ramsey Lewis Trio(1964), Ingfried Hoffmann(1969), Laurindo Almeida& Ray Brown(1970), The Modern Jazz Quartet(1974), Chris Hinze(1976), Eugen Cicero Trio(1985) κ.ά.
Τα έργα του Bach, από τα οποία επηρεάζεται και ανασκευάζει ο Ilg είναι πολλά και διάφορα – μπορούμε δε να δώσουμε και τις επίσημες αριθμήσεις τους, αλλά δεν έχει νόημα. Εκείνο που έχει νόημα να πούμε είναι πως ο Ilgπαρουσιάζεται αρκετά πρωτότυπος εδώ, με επιτυχείς εναρμονίσεις σε συγκεκριμένα μελωδικά patterns και με πολύ ελευθερία περαιτέρω, ώστε να επιτύχει εκείνο που θα ονομάζαμε «προσωπική κατάδειξη». Φυσικά, στο “B-A-C-H” μεγάλο μερίδιο ευθύνης φέρει και ο πιανίστας Rainer Böhm – ένας μουσικός που έγινε πιο γνωστός μέσα από τα γκρουπ του τρομπετίστα Thomas Siffling, και που έχει και δική του αξιόλογη δισκογραφία.
THREE FALL & MELANE: Four [9676-2 ACT, 2017]
Ως “young german jazz” προσδιορίζεται το “Four” των Three Fall & Melane, άρα ναυποθέσουμε πως μετον έναν ήτον άλλον τρόπο οι Lutz Streun μπάσο κλαρίνο, τενόρο σαξόφωνο, Sebastian Winne ντραμς, κρουστά, Til Schneider τρομπόνι καιMelane Nkounkolo είναι Γερμανοί – και τούτο, γιατί δενγίνεται να υποθέσουμε κάτι άλλο.
Στη βάση της η jazz που ακούμε εδώ είναι σύγχρονη και κυρίως αμερικανική, δίχως πάντως να απουσιάζουν και κάποια ευρωπαϊκά χαρακτηριστικά – από ’κείνα που προσέφερε αφειδώς, όσο βρισκόταν εν ζωή, το Esbjörn SvenssonTrio. Η αμερικανίλα του “Four” πιάνει κόκκινο κυρίως στις περιπτώσεις των τραγουδιών της Melane, που είναι εντελώς street/r&b, επιχειρώντας σε κάτι από εκείνα που τολμούσαν προ 20ετίας-25ετίας, με εντυπωσιακά αποτελέσματα, οι Us3 και ο Guru Jazzmatazz.
Οι Γερμανοί έχουν ακόμη ένα προσόν. Ή μάλλον δύο. Πέραν του ότι είναι καλοί ως συνθέτες (ο τρομπονίστας Schneider βασικά, που έχει γράψει σχεδόν όλα τα πρωτότυπα tracks – καθώς υπάρχουν και κάτι λίγες διασκευές σε e.s.t. και Ace of Base) είναι και ως παίκτες ψαγμένοι και ελπιδοφόροι, αφού κάνουν τα όργανά τους ν’ ακούγονται άλλοτε σαν κιθάρες, άλλοτε σαν πλήκτρα κ.ο.κ. Πέφτει… μπαλαμούτι δηλαδή, αλλά είναι πολύ καλό και τους βγαίνει.
MARIUS NESET: Circle of Chimes [9038-2 ACT, 2017]
Ο σαξοφωνίστας (τενόρο-σοπράνο) Marius Neset, που τον έχουμε δει και από τα μέρη μας, είναι ένας από τους πιο ενδιαφέροντες, Ευρωπαίους, σύγχρονους τζαζ συνθέτες. Κάτι που το αποδεικνύει και με το πιο καινούριο CD του, που έχει τίτλο “Circle of Chimes” και το οποίον αποτελείται μόνο από δικές του συνθέσεις. Και τι συνθέσεις! Τέλειου σχεδιασμού, 12λεπτης, 9λεπτης, 8λεπτης ακόμη και 3λεπτης διάρκειας, τις οποίες ενορχηστρώνει ο ίδιος. Διαθέτει, βεβαίως, παικταράδες στο συγκρότημά του ο Neset, ασχέτως αν ο ίδιος κρατάει τον πρώτο ρόλο για τον εαυτό του στην ορχήστρα, ασχέτως αν αποφασίζει μόνος του για εκείνο ή το άλλο. Δίπλα, λοιπόν, στον άπαιχτο Νορβηγό στέκονται οι Lionel Loueke κιθάρες, φωνή, Andreas Brantelid τσέλο, IngridNeset φλάουτα, Ivo Neame πιάνο, Jim Hart βιμπράφωνο, μαρίμπα, κρουστά, Petter Eldhκοντραμπάσο και Anton Eger ντραμς, κρουστά.
Το αποτέλεσμα το ακούμε. Συνθέσεις ιδιότροπες με αναφορές πολλές και διαφορετικές (ευρωπαϊκές, αμερικανικές, αφρικανικές), που ανοίγονται σε πολύχρωμους δρόμους, με όργανα όπως η μαρίμπα και το βιμπράφωνο να έχουν ισχυρά μερίδια, δίπλα στα πιο… κλασικά (σαξόφωνα, κιθάρα, πιάνο), συντελώντας σε μια «γιορτή» που ενίοτε αποκτά εκστατικά χαρακτηριστικά (“Sirens of Cologne”).
Από τα δυνατά τζαζ άλμπουμ της χρονιάς που πέρασε.
