Kailyard Tales is the follow up album to 2014’s Lion Rampant. Sadly, it marks Dave Swarbrick’s last studio album, recorded before he passed away in 2016. The duo, backed by Wilson’s band and several special guests, continue to explore the intersections of various folk/rebel musics of the past 400 years. The album includes a few self-penned cuts, Sandy Denny’s ‘It Suits Me Well’, John Dowland’s ‘Say Love if ever thou didst find’, and the Scottish abduction ballad ‘Eppie Moray’. Special guests include Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, The Battlefield Band’s Alan Reid and Rob Van Sante, Ian Campbell and his son, UB40’s Ali Campbell (marking the only time father and son sang together on record).
Running against the purists’ convention, Wilson & Swarbrick hope to pick up where they left off with Lion Rampant , an album that was described by English folk music critic Ken Hunt (fRoots) as “Head and shoulders, the most eclectic, catholic and coherent musical banquet of 2014 thus far.” Similarly, Michael Hunter (Fiddlestix) described Wilson & Swarbrick’s first full-length offering as “predictably high quality, well produced music with intelligently considered arrangementsthis music works because it is in exactly the right hands.”

Venerable Ethiopian composer, Mulatu Astake is the locus of this enlightening compilation, which was first issued to the wider world on CD in 1992 and is now reissued 25 years later.
…”Thanks to the work of Finland’s Global Music Centre – a mobile recording studio – which travelled to Addis Ababa to record the two headline bands, whom both shared a mutual component in Mr. Astatke, the set covers early iterations of drum machine used in Ethiopian popular music, as well as sterling examples of the confluence between domestic religious and secular themes, and traces of rock, funk, pop and soul influence from America and Europe.

…of the Ethio Stars, widely regarded the best musicians in the country at the time, gripping the head hips and shoulders with the clipped groove and floating, spectral organ of Aderech Arada, Bekifir / Menged Lay Wodike, then updating the classic Kermosew melody with synths and a big fat funk bassline, while Yetentu Tez Alew clearly nods to ‘80s boogie, but always within that definitive Ethio sound, and Tiz Baleen Gize brings Getatchew Kassa’s vocal into play.
On the other side, Tukul Band experiment with more traditional forms of Ethiopian music. Headed by Mulatu Astatke, the band jam on electrified models of traditional instruments such as the Krar – a six-string bowl-lyre nicknamed “the devil’s instrument” – along with the masinko, Ethiopia’s only bowed instrument typically played by an Azamri or bard/griot, and the washint, a bamboo flute heard on many, many Ethiopian recordings. These pieces are perhaps more urgent, compared with the cool vibes of the others, and definitely worth checking for the haunting instrumental duet in Sound of Washint & Masinko.” — boomkat

La petite histoire du groupe tient en un seul tube ...
En 1987, ça commence comme ça avec "Des gens stricts" , le carton qui définit les contours du groupe un peu Rock, un peu décalé, faussement post punk...
(Notez qu'il existe 2 versions longues distinctes de ce titre !)
En 1988, le groupe se cherche pour le second single et fait du mauvais copié-collé sur "Mannequins de studio"... plouf !
Le groupe en suite s'enferme en studio pour pondre son premier (et unique album), il y a un changement de direction musicale et donc les 2 précédents singles ne seront pas inclus (et ça va nuire à la promo, l'absence DU tube !!!)
- en 1990 "Voyage à l'envers" sort donc et se plante magistralement, car trop éloigné des "gens stricts". C'est bien dommage car ce titre est une tuerie !
- En 1991, la dernière tentative , avant le split final, est un remix de "Bandit bandit"... a nouveau décontenancé , plus personne ne suit...
Bon, j'en ai quand même fait 2CDs !
Le CD 1 regroupe l'album (avec le son tout rééquilibré) + les 4 singles, les 2 derniers étant des remixes ou version écourtées de l'album..
Le CD 2 ... ben ya tout le reste ! Les versions instrus planquées sur les 45T, les remixes (12", CDM et 12" promo) et mon préféré la version "suite" de voyage à l'envers, censé se retrouver sur le 45T (il y est!) et sur le CD single (là il n'y est pas ! Malgré ce qui est marqué à la place il y a la version album, et le mix y est différent!)

The lovechild of Leonard Cohen and the Angel of Americana, Songs From Church Avenue is the third album from the Reverend John DeLore, an unheralded artist out of Brooklyn who is building a solid (but still relatively underground) reputation among those who like their melodies spiked with poetry.
DeLore’s first two albums deal in train-wheel rhythms and alt-country visions of American expanse, but Songs From Church Avenue puts the listener into a small, sparsely decorated room in a big city. The Americana feeling is still there in the music, but it’s ornamented in a new way – with lovely, spacious arrangements, and with lyrics that paint a full, romantic picture with minimalist strokes.

Something Else by The Cranberries is a strange sort of greatest hits compilation. On one hand, it does collect the Irish band’s most popular songs, dutifully released to mark the 25 years since their first formal musical release: the ethereal, fresh-faced 1992 single “Dreams”. But Something Else isn’t a mercenary cash grab, bloodlessly assembled to fulfill a contractual obligation. For one, it features three brand-new songs. Every old song on it was also re-recorded in 2016 acoustically and with string accompaniment (provided by the Irish Chamber Orchestra). Rather, Something Else is a veteran band’s attempt to celebrate their own canon by reimagining and extending it.
