Concrete Blonde beefed up their lineup by adding a second guitarist, Alan Block, for 1989’s Free. Like their self-titled debut release, the L.A.-based band focuses on the dark side of modern life, but they also intersperse a few lighter songs into the mix with good results. Free also found the band producing themselves. The grinding guitars and lead singer Johnette Napolitano’s passionate vocals made the searing “God Is a Bullet” a college radio hit. “Roses Grow” is an interesting track with Napolitano making barstool observations over a metallic drumbeat. It is the lighter moments on the album that really shine, though, like the gentle warmth of the optimistic “Sun” and “Happy Birthday,” a jangly pop rocker. The band also takes a stab at Thin Lizzy’s “It’s Only Money.” Free shows a considerable amount of growth in both the songwriting and playing of their debut and makes it a worthwhile follow-up.

The Citradels are self-releasing their eighth album, God Bless.
God Bless is a concept album of sorts. It abstractly explores themes of influence, religion and morality through characters from a small town gradually falling out of touch with its surrounds.
Recorded, mixed and mastered by the band from mid-2016 to early 2017, the album is a progression of the sound that the Citradels have developed since their inception as a group five years ago. God Bless is a honing of their 60’s pop writing treated with elements ranging from doo-wop to dream pop, krautrock to country and Gregorian chant to shoegaze. The early Citradels sound remains although it has been refined; God Bless represents a maturing of the creative concept.

Do you remember ? The last album we had by Les Fantaisistes
was about a small bird, this one is about contemplation, sunbathing,
love of course a blue dream and something like volleyball but slightly
different. I guess Valley Ball is not a kind of sport. Petit Oiseau was

Along with 2012’s Rhythm and Repose and 2015’s Didn’t He Ramble, singer-songwriter Glen Hansard completes something of a low-key folk trilogy with Between Two Shores.
This record from the former Frames frontman and Swell Season collaborator is a post-mortem of a failed relationship, and the thematic in-betweenness here makes it hard to pinpoint where on the emotional reckoning spectrum Hansard landed when he holed up in the recording studio. Early stage and angry? On “Your Heart’s Not In It,” he sings: “Stop turning your back on me / Every time someone passes by / Or mentions your name.” Resigned and spiteful on “Movin’ On”? “I’m tired of thinkin’ about you baby/ I’m moving on.” Or is it late-stage cliché, as on “Time Will Be the Healer”?
If nothing else, it’s a good excuse to bring together Hansard’s touring band and a list of impressive collaborators. Recorded in France and produced by Frames guitarist David Odlum, this is expertly crafted and lushly arranged folk-rock, with some pretty fabulous horns. Set aside some time to appreciate “Setting Forth,” which features the otherworldly drumming of Brian Blade and members of his Fellowship Band.

The Worms Heart is a complete re-work of The Shins critically acclaimed March, 2017 album ‘Heartworms’. The album offers new reworked versions of the ‘Heartworms’ album original tracks, and the sequence is flipped as well.
When James Mercer wrote, produced, and recorded the Heartworms album, he had this desire for an alternate version, an opposite version. The album’s slow songs would be flipped and re-recorded as fast songs, and vice versa. The reasoning was to showcase the versatility and strength of his songwriting, and the result is The Worm’s Heart. This ‘flipped’ collection is produced by Yuuki Matthews, Jon Sortland, & James Mercer; and is a must for any fan of The Shins.
