Όταν το 1973 κυκλοφόρησε στην Αμερική το άλμπουμ τού Hugh Masekela “Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz” [Blue Thumb] ελάχιστοι γνώριζαν εκείνη τη φοβερή μπάντα από την Γκάνα, την Hedzoleh Soundz, με την οποία τακίμιασε ο νοτιοαφρικανός τρομπετίστας, στο κλαμπ Napoleon της Άκρα, όταν επισκέφτηκε τη χώρα. Σχεδόν αμέσως, όλοι μαζί (Hugh Masekela τρομπέτα, φωνή, Nat “Leepuma” Hammond φλάουτο, κόνγκα, φωνή, Richard Neesai “Jagger” Botchway κιθάρες, Stanley Kwesi Todd μπάσο, φωνή, Acheampong Welbeck ντραμς, James Kwaku Morton κόνγκα, φωνή, Issac Asante talking ντραμς, κρουστά, φωνή, Samuel Nortey κρουστά, φωνή) θα μεταβούν στο Λάγκος της Νιγηρίας, όπου, με τη βοήθεια του Fela, θα γράψουν τον Ιούλιο του ’73 εκείνο το καταπληκτικό αμερικάνικο LP, που σφράγισε, έκτοτε, το afro-jazz κεφάλαιο. RIP Hugh Masekela.

Επειδή μου αρέσει να υπερβάλλω (λίγο...) λέω πως όσο έσπρωξε σε Αγγλία και Αμερική το σκληρό ροκ ο Hendrix το έσπρωξε μόνο του αυτό το τραγούδι των Procol Harum. Είναι απίστευτος ο Robin Trower, αλλά ακόμη πιο απίστευτος είναι ο B.J. Wilson στο τσοκάνι (στο cow-bell, στο κουδούνι της αγελάδας).

Αυτή η παπαρέλα, που περιφέρεται από τους… αριστερούς της Εκάλης ως όρκος του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου («Δεν ξεχωρίζω τους ανθρώπους, όπως κάνουν οι στενοκέφαλοι, σε Έλληνες και βαρβάρους. Δεν με ενδιαφέρει η καταγωγή των πολιτών, ούτε η φυλή που γεννήθηκαν. Τους καταμερίζω με ένα μόνο κριτήριο, την αρετή»), έχει τόσο σχέση με την πραγματικότητα όσο η… γνωστή ρήση του Μάρκο Πόλο για τους μουσουλμάνους («φανατικός μουσουλμάνος είναι αυτός που σου κόβει το κεφάλι, ενώ μετριοπαθής είναι εκείνος που σε κρατάει για να σου κόψουν το κεφάλι»).
Το έγραψα κι εχθές…
Όποιος παραδιαβάζει Ιστορία (από τα βάθη των αιώνων) μπερδεύεται περισσότερο και στο τέλος καταντάει να λέει μόνο βλακείες – όταν καλείται να σκεφτεί για ένα θέμα τού σήμερα.
Είναι η φάση όπου η Ιστορία παύει πλέον να διδάσκει, καθώς μετατρέπεται σ’ ένα μηχανισμό ανακύκλησης ανεξέλεγκτων παραθεμάτων, που οδηγούν μοιραία στη στρέβλωση της σκέψης και εν τέλει στην αποχαύνωση.

Matt Randall and Lee Hall have known each other for years, with the pair helping to steer 90s John Peel favourites Beatglider. Joined by fellow Southend based musicians Roy Thirlwall and Leighton Jennings, it’s fair to say that Ghost Music have a history.

This weight of experience comes to the fore on their debut LP, with ‘I Was Hoping You’d Pass By Here’ deciding to wear its influences on its paisley pattern sleeve. So expect supremely dreamy guitar pop minimalism, with shades of Galaxie 500, K Records, and Flying Nun groups such as The Clean or even The Chills.

A superb genre piece, where this debut album excels is in its presentation. The lucid songwriting aims to recover lost memories, delving in the band’s own adolescence – those superbly well chosen influences – to create shadows, the ‘ghost music’ of the band’s name.

Maybe he’s still pining for “Jessie’s Girl,” but Rick Springfield has got the blues — at least on record. The Grammy-winning rocker is releasing The Snake King, his first blues-oriented album, Jan. 26 via Frontiers Music SRL.

“All my first bands that I played in as a kid in Australia were blues bands, trying desperately to copy as best we could the amazing music we were hearing coming out of the Chicago blues scene and the older stuff from the deep South,,” said Springfield in a statement. “My guitar playing was always influenced by the same guys who influenced all the English players I grew up with, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, etc. Everyone was playing their version of what they heard from the Southern Blues and the Chicago scene.”

Het betrof een sommatie van het Franse SYLLART label. Offie alles uit Guinee maar effe van zijn site af wil halen. Want zij hebben rechten en wij niet.

Nu was ik van zins jullie op een plaat te trakteren van de Westafrikaanse bard Kouyate Sory Kandia. Dat lijkt nu een beetje gevaarlijk, want advokaten zijn doorgaans geen leuke mensen.

Persoonlijk vind ik het recht van SYLLART op het Guinese materiaal nogal dubieus. De opnames zijn allemaal gemaakt in de staats-studio's van dictator Ahmed Sekou Touré. Hij was de eerste president  na de onafhankelijkheid in 1958 en hoewel er ongetwijfeld talloze karakterfouten zijn aan te wijzen, was hij voor de muziek-scene een zegen. Een label, nationale orkesten, regionale orkesten en heel veel traditionele ensembles die ruim baan kregen op radio en tv (RTG).

De baas van SYLLART werkte daar ooit bij de radio en nam bij vertrek enkele koffers mee vol met audiotapes, die hij sindsdien in Parijs aan het uitventen is. Ik ben benieuwd hoeveel de muzikanten daarvan zien. Ik vrees het ergste
De meeste opnames betreffen traditionele muziek en de muzikanten en studio zijn betaald door de Guinese belastingbetaler

Nu wil het gelukkige toeval dat alle mooie muziek van het label Silyphone en het complete radio-archief van de RTG gratis on-line te beluisteren zijn op de site van het British Museum.

Fellow blogger Moos from the amazing site Global Grooves recently received a threatening letter from a lawyer on his doormat. It summoned him to get rid of all Guinean music from his blog
Because they have rights and we don't.


Now was my idea to make ye-all  happy with a record from the West African singer Kouyate Sory Kandia (SLP37). That now seems a dangerous endeavour, lawyers are usually not nice people.

Personally i found those rights SYLLART claim to have over Guinean music rather dubious. All recordings are made in state studio's  of dictator Ahmed Sekou Touré. He was the first president after independance in 1958. He had no doubt many character flaws, but for the music scene he was a blessing.  A fine label, national orchestra's, regional orchestra's, many traditional ensembles,  who al found their way to the airwaves thanks to radio and television (RTG). 

The CEO of SYLLART worked some time at the radio  and when he left he took some suitcases full of audiotapes that he later, living in Paris, started to cash into. I am curious how much of the dough will go to the artists and their families. Very little i fear.
By the way: most songs and pieces are traditional and the musicians and studio's were paid for by the Guinean tax payer.


Lucky coincidence has it that all of Silyphones fine recordings plus those in the archives of the RTG are now free available on the website of the British Museum.

As the song goes, one day, Almamy Samory Toure’s wife asked for Baobab leaves from the court of the royal castle of Sikasso, knowing that the Almamy’s whole army had been stationed at the gates of Sikasso for 18 years, unable to penetrate it and defeat this last bastion of Senufo resistance to his brand of political Islam. Jali Kandia Kouyate’s song says that Almamy Samory Toure then called on Keme Bourema, his younger brother, to tell him about his wife’s request for Baobab leaves, for the evening couscous sauce.

Jali Kandia Kouyate’s song describes Keme Bourema’s simple and dignified appearance, followed by his prophetically possessed deeds, that day. He carried no weapon, nor had anyu armies with him; he tied his waist tight with a scarf; mounted his horse and crossed valleys, mountains, rivers and forests, amid bullets, arrows, and spears thrown at him by the enemy. He reached the fortress of Sikasso; passed through the king’s last army, until he was in the royal court. Keme Bourema returned with the Baobab leaves and laid them at the door of Samori’s wife. 

Jali Kandia Kouyate then brings his song to a climax: Why did Keme Bourema do what he did? He did not do it for money; he did not do it to show off ; and he did not do it for the love of one woman. He did it for the exemplarity of deeds; and such actions immortalized his name. For death takes away a life and the earth eats away the body, but nothing can kill or eat away a person’s name. That was the example that Keme Bourema left us with.
