Muddy Waters – Live at Rockpalast (2018)

Muddy Waters had a great ear for talent and accordingly the formation which you will hear on this DVD was one of the very best: The pianist Pinetop , the drummer Willie Big Eyes Smith , the bass player Calvin Jones , the two guitarists Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson and Bob Margolin and the harmonica player Jerry Portnoy. At the Rockpalast recording on December 10, 1978 at Westfalenhalle Dortmund Muddy Waters still was at the height of his creative power, his mighty vocals and his splendid charisma on stage fascinated the audience. Muddy’s guitar playing on the Fender Telecaster especially comes into full effect with his typical slow blues solos – and seldom had Muddy such a hot sound as in this tv recording of the WDR. The song selection of the evening consisted of several of his biggest hits which probably are standard discipline of each evening (Hoochie Coochie Man, Walkin’ Thru The Park, a superb version of the macho hymn Mannish Boy and, of course, the immortal Got My Mojo Workin’), but also less performed titles like Soon Forgotten by St. Louis Jimmy Oden or Country Boy, both atmospheric slow blues with slide. When the Muddy Waters Tribute Band appeared at the Rockpalast Open-Air at the Loreley on June 23, 1996 (bonus content DVD2), the pianist Pinetop Perkins could unfortunately not travel due to medical reasons and Jerry Portnoy was replaced by blues harper Carey Bell who had already played in Muddy’s band in early 1970. All band members switch with the vocals and in Gone To Main Street The Band’s Levon Helm is to be heard as a guest singer. Naturally, the repertoire consists mainly of Muddy Waters classics but also songs of Jimmy Reed, two titles that have become known through Albert King and one original composition of the drummer Willie Smith were on the set list.

Steep Canyon Rangers – Out in the Open (2018)

The sessions that produced Out In The Open were brisk and instinctive, expansive yet intimate, visceral and immediate – and they would have had to be, for herein are songs that tell the big story by drawing the small ones. There is, to my ear, as much of Raymond Carver’s literate and humane influence on display as the Osborne Brothers, as much Welty in the pointed details – both sublime and confounding – as Clark and Van Zandt. Compassion and determination act as connective tissue when, throughout this song cycle, the bones, muscle, and blood of daily life dance with loose-limbed motion toward the inevitable, guided by an ethos best articulated by Sam Beckett who directed that when we falter, we try again and ”fail better.”

While in the studio, the Rangers stood in a circle – facing each other and the music with a well-worn brotherhood that was as well open to all they could not imagine transpiring between them. The songs were written as a map, and their shared history a compass blade, but the road itself – the journey – was a moving target and, as with all relevant music, remains one. And the Steep Canyon Rangers are moving along with it. – Joe Henry

Saeid Shanbehzadeh – Pour-Afrigha (2017)

0

Saeid ShanbehzadehPolitics and music are rarely far apart, as perhaps nowhere more evident than in the music of exiles wherever they find themselves. At a forcible remove from its cultural foundations, dislocated artistry resides as close as memory and sentiment can bring tradition bearers to a time, place and way of life that, if now denied to the artist, can be only more unfamiliar to the audience. Yet all that changes when the artist, in the company of fellow exiles and rootless cosmopolitans, finding themselves in a strange land, commune in song.
Born to a Baluchi father and Afro-Iranian mother descended from Zanzibar exiles enslaved in the Persian Gulf region of southern Iran, Saied Shanbehzadeh himself left for France when his experimental fusions of African-Iranian…

…possession ritual music and other regional folk forms found disfavor with the cultural police (he was convicted in absentia for blasphemy and faces lashing and imprisonment if he were to return). Shanbehzadeh sings, composes, arranges and plays the neyanban (a double-reed bagpipe made of goatskin) and saxophone.

Joining Shanbehzadeh on this Paris studio recording is Iranian Baluchi singer Rostam Mirlashari, a former political prisoner exiled in Sweden, where he studied Swedish and Baluchi folk traditions at the Royal University of Music. Accompanying are French jazz guitarist Manu Codija, Shanbehzadeh’s conservatory trained son Naghib on percussion (zarb-timpo, dammam, kesser, darbuka), and several guests.

The results are evocative, far-reaching and elusive of place, a condition well familiar to a band of exiles brought together by political circumstance and the vagaries of fate. Drawing on songs and rhythms of maritime labor (“Kalfat”), family (the title track), love, theatre, dance, nature (“Malle Baloutchan”) and devotion, the music courses through the quotidian traditions of the Persian Gulf and the Baluchistan region of the Indian Ocean border between Iran and Pakistan. Yet the work simultaneously reflects the influences attendant to the artists’ individual histories of displacement, jazz improvisation in particular (e.g., “Jazz Bandari”), as they have converged in the multicultural mélange that is Paris. — rootsworld.com

Todd Clouser, John Medeski, JT Bates – You The Brave: Live at Icehouse (2018)

On July 24, 2017 vocalist/guitarist Todd Clouser, keyboardist John Medeski, and drummer JT Bates met in Minneapolis, Minnesota on a Monday night as part of Bates’ “Jt’s Jazz Implosion” series, now nearly 20 years running.

A year after their first meeting, the trio performed to a sold out audience, taking the stage after Dave Chapelle by last minute coincidence. Song, musicianship, experimentation and nods to the three musicians’ instrumental prowess made for a night of music for community and creativity’s sake, documented on “You The Brave : Live at Icehouse”. Running from blues and groove (2100, Where’s Her Money From), and song (White Jesus) to outbursts of beatnik colored commentary to sound exploration, the trio performed nearly 2 hours of music, documented in this recording.

Kyle Craft – Full Circle Nightmare (2018)

a2472023521_16.jpg256 kbps | 76 MB | LINKS

Ever since his debut album ‘Dolls of Highland’ was released on Sub Pop in 2016, Kyle Craft has been a critic’s dream. Based in Portland, he serves up all the observational, storytelling talent with none of the attitude that so often comes with male singer-songwriter territory. “I’ve found my place,” he says. “I’m not one of those people that approaches music for anyone other than myself. My favorite part about music is when it’s just me and a notebook.” Speaking of, his second forthcoming album ‘Full Circle Nightmare’ is entirely autobiographical. Sonically, thematically, lyrically, it’s a huge leap forward from his 2016 release.
The title ‘Full Circle Nightmare’ refers to a moment where Craft saw his life for what it is and told himself to be satisfied. “But that’s nightmarish to me,” he laughs. He described his debut record as: “like walking down this long hall of bizarre characters and surreal experiences, moving through the spider web of love and loss.” This album is when you get to the end of that hallway, turn around and see all the stuff you’ve been through, then walk through the door, close it and start a new chapter in an even crazier hallway. A straight-up rollicking rock’n’roll album, it traverses all the different nuances of the genre; from the bluegrass twang of ‘Exile Rag,’ to the gothic style of ‘Gold Calf Moan,’ it’s a timeless piece that could exist in any of the past five decades.

In terms of contemporary peers, Craft likes to stay in his own lane. He’s an old soul who sticks to his tried and tested influences. Social media is not his game – it’s just not interesting to him. He’s not fussed about preaching his politics or discussing the status quo either. “I don’t really like writing a time piece. I don’t wanna get trapped in the ‘Donald Trump era of Kyle Craft,’ you know? I’m a very off-the-grid sort of person. As much as I am traveling across this giant place sometimes I just feel so outside of it. Also, I’m not necessarily a stand-up citizen so it’s hard for me to say: here’s Kyle Craft’s America, ladies and gentlemen.”

The ironic thing is that ‘Full Circle Nightmare’ sounds exactly like Kyle Craft’s America. That is what he’s built for us: the story of one man’s trials and tribulations to find his passion and voice for art and creativity in this vast opportunistic country. Where did he find it? Among the historic riches of America’s most honest sounds.
