NOYA RAO: Icaros [Gondwana, 2017]
Noya Raoδεν είναι το όνομα κάποιας ή κάποιου μουσικού, μα η ονομασία ενός συγκροτήματος. Μέλη των Noya Raoείναι οι Oliva Bhattacharjeeφωνή, στίχοι, Tom Henryπλήκτρα, James Wiltshireμπάσο και Matt Daviesντραμς. Το συγκρότημα, που είναι τραγουδιστικό, θα μπορούσες να το κατατάξεις στο είδος της σύγχρονης σοφιστικέ pop, που διατηρεί συγχρόνως και κάποια στοιχεία από το hip hop και την jazz. Ελαφρά, βεβαίως, γιατί τα βασικά συστατικά των τραγουδιών των Noya Rayoείναι τα electro και τα pop(και ουχί τα… electro-pop). Υπάρχουν φυσικά, εδώ κι εκεί, κάτι «σφήνες», που μπορεί να φέρνουν στο νου κάτι από την seventies τραγουδοποιία του Eno (“Dreaming Pt.1”, “Dreaming Pt.2”), αλλά σε γενικές γραμμές το άκουσμα είναι από… trip-hop και προς τα κάτω. Δεν έχει, με άλλα λόγια, πολύ σχέση με το απώτερο παρελθόν. Καλό ή κακό είναι αυτό; Δύσκολο να πεις. Εξαρτάται. Πάντως, οι Noya Rao δεν κάνουν, με τα τραγούδια τους, κάποια μεγάλη διαφορά. Συμπαθητικοί είναι, όπως και η φωνή της Bhattacharjee (που θα ταίριαζε τέλεια σε downtempo), όπως και οι στίχοι της, που στρέφονται κυρίως γύρω από το ερωτικό «άλλο», μέσα πάντα από μια σοφιστικέ διάθεση. Μπορεί να έγραψα δύο φορές αυτή τη λέξη, το «σοφιστικέ» εννοώ (και μία τρίτη, τώρα), αλλά είναι η λέξη που ταιριάζει καλύτερα απ’ όλες στα τραγούδια τούτου του άλμπουμ των Noya Rao, που αποκαλείται “Icaros”.
MAMMAL HANDS: Shadow Work [Gondwana, 2017]
Τρίο είναι οιMammal Hands αποτελούμενοι εκτων Nick Smart πιάνο, Jesse Barrett ντραμς, κρουστά καιJordan Smart σαξόφωνα, ενώ σε δύο tracks υπάρχουν καιέξτρα strings από τους Tom Moore και Pete Yelding. Για τι ακριβώς τρίο πρόκειται; Θα ρωτούσε κάποιος… Jazz trio, αλλά δίχως σχέση με τις τρανές παραδόσεις του blues και του bop. Δεν είναι, δηλαδή, επ’ ουδενί… Αμερικανοί οι Mammal Hands, όντας σφόδρα επηρεασμένοι από εκείνο τον τύπο τής euro-jazz που ανέδειξαν οι e.s.t. ήδη από τα nineties. Αυτό δε σημαίνει, βεβαίως, πως οι Mammal Handsηχούν όπως οι e.s.t. –εξάλλου τα δύο σχήματα δεν έχουν το ίδιο setting–, αλλά το ότι ανιχνεύονται απλές τζαζ μελωδίες, κλασικότροπης περισσότερο έμπνευσης, που παρουσιάζονται μ’ έναν κάπως σύνθετο τρόπο. Με επαναληπτικά σχήματα, που δημιουργούν σύντομα minimalπεριβάλλοντα, και με μελωδικούς αυτοσχεδιασμούς στο σαξόφωνο, που ακούγονται σαν να είναι περασμένοι στο πεντάγραμμο (ίσως και να είναι – δεν είναι ευκόλως αναγνώσιμα τα όρια).
Το “Shadow Work” είναι ένα άλμπουμ με σαφή προτερήματα, όσον αφορά στην επεξεργασία και τη διαχείριση των μελωδιών, αλλά σαν σύνολο ακούγεται κάπως παγερό και τεχνοκρατικό.

Matt Hannah – Dreamland (2017)

Matt Hannah’s Dreamland is an album of roots-tinged rock, with just enough pedal steel, upright bass and accordion to make it rock that bit easier, and that’s appropriate as the title song, and album opener, explains. Here Hannah contrasts two sleep states, a pair of dreamlands – the one of his youth where he’d rock out all night with a band and then sleep until the afternoon, and the one he has now – where the listless drifting life with a band has been swapped for the steady life with just one woman. There’s contentment here “We have more peace in just one night / Than we thought a lifetime could hold” but, wouldn’t you know it?, there’s still some lingering attachment to the old life “sometimes it’s hard, it ain’t like we planned”. There’s something of a pattern that emerges across the album, a running theme of loss and the attempt to identify a counterbalancing gain which is done with variable levels of success. Dandelion reflects on “a hard road / it wasn’t your choice” but see’s that today is, maybe, better “when I’m at your side we can take anything”. That’s a protective thought – but when it comes up again on Broken Hearts and Broken Bones the turn of phrase is worrying – is there a slightly smug paternalistic sense to “you were a mess before you came to me”, and if there is does it get fully cancelled out by the self-critical confession that “sometimes I think I’ve got it figured out / Other times I’m filled with doubt” ?
Set Free rumbles with confidence, waltzing down the road of a new born day – the pedal steel light and expansive, the twelve-string guitar jangling. A mood of optimism also shines through the finger-picked The Night is my Home, with Matt Hannah glorying in traversing the desert by night, dazzled by stars and bouyed by a newfound sense of wonder.
There’s much to enjoy on this album, that counteracts the occasional flat track or lyrical stumble – no pedant can hear a line like “It don’t snow in California” without raising the proverbial eyebrow and muttering “tough luck for anyone heading to the ski-resorts”. Overall though it’s a fine album, and a solid second release from Matt Hannah.

Christobal Weerasinghe née Kotalawala born in the 1920's into a Sri Lanka family of wealth, diplomats and political power. It was the beginning of the 1920s and the life she inherited was one of extraordinary privilege – her family could trace their genealogy back to the kings of Kotte and in the present her father, Sir Henry Kotalawala had broken all records with 26 consecutive years as a member of the Legislative and State Council. She made 6 long playing records about the music and people of India, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Israel and the Arab world. Though UNICEF and UNESCO provided her with the material, it was she who wrote and then narrated the scripts. (All royalties from the sales and any honorariums she received were donated to UNICEF.) Another series of recordings, dubbed ‘Tales from the East, re-written for Children’ was broadcast over New York and Washington networks and her ‘Portraits of Ceylon’ aired over 44 stations and was used by the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation and the Trinidad Broadcasting Corporation.
