Rufus Wainwright – Vibrate: The Best of Rufus Wainwright (2014)
320 kbps | 315 MB | LINKS
The Best of Rufus Wainwright brings together many of the singer/songwriter’s best cuts, as chosen by him, from his various studio albums. Included here are songs off his 1998 self-titled debut all the way through to his 2012 album, Out of the Game. Also included are several cuts Wainwright recorded for the 2001 soundtrack to Shrek. That said, missing here are cuts off his intimate 2007 album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, as are any tracks from his several concert albums, most notably his 2007 Judy Garland-themed performance Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall. Perhaps Wainwright viewed All Days Are Nights, which was recorded during his mother Kate McGarrigle’s illness with cancer, as too much of a personal statement to single out any of its tracks for inclusion here. Similarly, maybe Wainwright felt that as a show largely built around American Songbook standards, his Judy Garland concert simply worked too well as stand-alone conceptual entity to cherry-pick from. Nonetheless, some fans may miss their exclusion from Vibrate, which is not to say that Vibrate isn’t a substantial window onto Wainwright’s oeuvre. On the contrary, rather than simply presenting a chronological set of songs from his first album to his most recent, Wainwright attempted to present this career-spanning overview with an ear to creating a dramatic flow for the listener, the same way he does with all his albums. The result is a beautifully curated mix of songs, each of which offers a chapter in the story of Wainwright’s life and career.

Addis sisters (Ethiopia)
That ofcourse is great. But it must be me getting old that i sometimes long for the feeling i got in the old days when i found some exotic tape. On a flee market, in a shoarma joint or in the collection of new found friends...
I remember clearly, it was in the early 80's of last century, i was riding my bike home with two newfound borrowed Ethiopian cassettes burning in my pocket. My first Ethio tape ever was from the spectecular Tilahun Gessesse and these two were a welcome addition to my small library of worldwide local music.
I rushed home to my tapedeck and nervously inserted the first treasure. By Mahmud Ahmad the cover said and later, when the songs appeared on vinyl, i found out it was the legendary album Era Mela Mela. Still one of his best, in my opinion.
The other tape's sleeve was unreadable mostly thanks to my lack in formal Amharic education. But the music inside instantly blew my mind. Wow!! Two girls singing their heart out in front of a jazzy Ethiopian combo. So i called them 'the Addis Sisters'.
In the following years i only once found another Addis Sisters' tape on line, i forgot which blog (sorry). They sung together with an electronic organ in a very empty room. Nice but not great.
Recently i was visiting this fine blog about Ethiopian music and look! The Addis Sisters with a 45 rpm 'Alemiya' and 'Gubiliye'. Really cool stuff. And what's even better: i finally got to know their names: Belaynesh Wubante & Assegedetch Asfaw.
Problably i will stick to the Addis Sisters for some time, old habit. But while the 45 rpm might be cool, the cassette i offer you today is really hot! That's not bragging, because i had no part in it.
Okay, best take them both down!

Beth Nielsen Chapman – Hearts of Glass (2018)
320 kbps | 101 MB | LINKS
In a career spanning almost 40 years, Beth Nielsen Chapman has been sparing with her album releases. She’s been twice nominated for Grammys and many may still think of her as primarily a songwriter: “This Kiss”, of which she was co-writer, was a big hit for Faith Hill and artists as blue-chip, and as diverse, as Bette Midler, Waylon Jennings, Bonnie Raitt and Elton John have recorded her songs.
Hearts of Glass is her 13th album – if you don’t count Greatest Hits (1999) and Liv On (2016), an album of hope and healing recorded with fellow breast cancer survivor Olivia Newton John and Amy Sky, who suffered the loss of a child to cancer – and her first since Uncovered (2014). It’s a mix of new and some old songs (including the poignant and beautiful “Child Again”, about the twilight years, “If My World Didn’t Have You” on which Rodney Crowell provides backing vocals) and while nothing compares to the majesty and profundity of “Sand and Water” from the 1997 album of the same name (nor should it, for it followed the death of her husband from cancer and the birth of a son who would scarcely knew his father) this is a satisfying and cohesive outing, her distinctive, warm and always true voice to the fore.
Two (new) songs connect BNC’s past and present stories: “Epitaph for Love”, in which she reflects on the pain of loss and finding love again, and “You’re Still My Valentine”, which hints at the illness of her second husband (“Hold tight my darlin’… Whatever life brings/You’re still my valentine”), though happily he is now in remission. “Valentine” has a wonderfully retro feel in terms of both sound and construction – a rich harmonic palette, with the augmented and diminished chords beloved of jazzmen but not so much Nashville cats; shifts from major to minor; Sam Ashworth’s brushes and Jeff Taylor’s accordion.
It was Whispering Bob Harris who introduced BNC to Ashworth and in addition to playing drums, percussion, guitar, synth and backing vocals he also produced the album, which was recorded in the singer-songwriter’s home town of Nashville. The CD features a gate-fold sleeve containing a large fold-out, with all the credits and lyrics actually readable. It can be done!
In a springtime of releases (and tours) by outstanding women (Joan Baez, Gretchen Peters, Mary Gauthier), it would be hard to decide where to spend your money if you’re short of it. I would never be without Baez (a moving album with which to close her 60-year career: more anon) and I’ve yet to hear the others. But for me Hearts of Glass is a keeper.
Los Texmaniacs – Americano Groove (2015)
320 kbps | 105 MB | LINKS
Americano Groove is welcome relief from a pretty slim year for good music, kicking off with the Los Lobos-like street-funk of “Down in the Barrio,” a duet with Alejandro Escovedeo (not to mention David Hidalgo on guitar!) that rattles and rolls like the opening credits to a Robert Rodriguez actioner. This is followed up by the more traditional accordion-driven rave up “Ya No Te Quiero Ver,” which is so different from the opener that within the first few minutes of the disc, the listener has experienced just how diverse the music of the Texmaniacs truly is.
The legendary Augie Meyers plays the keys on the sly “How Can a Beautiful Woman Be So Ugly,” while country singer Kevin Fowler (no relation…I think) gives a spirited Gilley’s-ready two-stepper in “Adios Mamacita” about loving and leaving a woman who “like a good tequila, she goes down nice.” Same goes for a Joe Ely guest spot on “I Wanna Know Your Name” and Rick Trevino spotlighted on the most modern country-ish track here, “Big Night in a Small Town.”
With only one or two slower numbers, Americano Groove revels in the fiesta festivities, right down to the final track “Polka Palitos” that actually inspired me to pick up a couple of Frankie Yankovic and Myron Floren albums—who knew at the age of 36 I’d replace rock with polka in my aural diet? This is the car-stereo album of the summer (or what’s left of it), perfect for cruising with the windows rolled down, steering wheel in one hand, Tiger’s Blood raspa in the other. And maybe a cup of elote between your legs just for fun.
