By 1969, Gram Parsons had already built the foundation of the country-rock movement through his work with the International Submarine Band and the Byrds, but his first album with the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin, was where he revealed the full extent of his talents, and it ranks among the finest and most influential albums the genre would ever produce. As a songwriter, Parsons delivered some of his finest work on this set; “Hot Burrito No. 1” and “Hot Burrito No. 2” both blend the hurt of classic country weepers with a contemporary sense of anger, jealousy, and confusion, and “Sin City” can either be seen as a parody or a sincere meditation on a city gone mad, and it hits home in both contexts. Parsons was rarely as strong as a vocalist as he was here, and his covers of “Dark End of the Street” and “Do Right Woman” prove just how much he had been learning from R&B as well as C&W. And Parsons was fortunate enough to be working with a band who truly added to his vision, rather than simply backing him up; the distorted swoops of Sneaky Pete Kleinow’s fuzztone steel guitar provides a perfect bridge between country and psychedelic rock, and Chris Hillman’s strong and supportive harmony vocals blend flawlessly with Parsons’ (and he also proved to be a valuable songwriting partner, collaborating on a number of great tunes with Gram). While The Gilded Palace of Sin barely registered on the pop culture radar in 1969, literally dozens of bands (the Eagles most notable among them) would find inspiration in this music and enjoy far greater success. But no one ever brought rock and country together quite like the Flying Burrito Brothers, and this album remains their greatest accomplishment.

Painted Doll – Painted Doll (2018)

PAINTED DOLL, the new band formed by comedian/guitar shredder Dave Hill and extreme metal veteran Chris Reifert (AUTOPSY, DEATH), recently inked a deal with the New York City independent label Tee Pee Records. The group’s self-titled debut, recorded and mixed by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording in Hoboken, New Jersey, will be released on February 16, 2018.
PAINTED DOLL came to life when “a death metal guy and a power-pop guy got hammered together at a GOBLIN concert in Texas.” Soon after, Reifert and Hill began trying to out-deep cut each other with late ’60s/early ’70s Dutch and British psych pop before Chris suggested the two musicians form a band together inspired by the music they’d been trading.
The record’s acid trip-esque cover art was created by Hill himself, who calls the colorful collage “something I would have drawn on my notebook back in high school after too much Robitussin.”

Annie Keating – Trick Star (2016)

Anyone who’s followed Annie Keating’s career over the course of the past decade or so will find it no surprise that her new effort Trick Star (out July 22 on 8th Street Studios) is exceptional. The fact is, she’s been producing one exquisite effort after another since the early part of the new millennium — each an example of how to make affecting folk music with obvious contemporary appeal.
Discovered by England’s foremost radio tastemaker Bob Harris, Keating has largely remained under the radar here in the States, unknown except to a knowing few. Trick Star ought to put that anonymity behind her, given its instant, unblemished appeal.
There are ample ballads here to fulfil the expectations of anyone who demands effervescent echoes of soft, stirring tones as tantamount to a singer-songwriter creed. But it’s the driving delivery of her uplifting anthems “You Bring the Sun” and “Time Come Help Me Forget” that gives the album a sense of exhilaration and engagement. The two numbers defy any attempt to avoid the obvious enticement. The former through its irresistible refrain, the latter with its gilded Byrds-like ring.
Nevertheless, Keating may well have saved the best for last with the closing track “Phoenix.” Enhanced, by a soaring choir, it climbs to a heavenly peak. In truth, there’s not a song here that isn’t an absolute gem, with sumptuous melodies that manage to weave their spell from first note to last. In fact, there’s no trick to Trick Star. Keating’s talent and ability are clearly profound.

Ahmad Zahir And Paryla (Afghanistan)
The Elvis of Afghanistan he was called, or the King of Afghan music. Ahmad Zahir was the first and only true mega superstar in that country. He died in a car accident on his 33rd birthday 14 june 1979. Half a year later the Russians invaded.Long ago i found two of Zahir's cassettes and i really liked them a lot. Ahmad was a talented singer who even did Dalidah-songs.
His music is a pleasant mixture of Afghan, Indian and European tones.
When i discovered a new Afghan shop in swampland's capital, i knew where to look for and bought a handfull of his CD's.
This is a nice one because it includes a female singer, Paryla i think her name is.
De Elvis van Afghanistan werd hij genoemd, of de Koning van de Afghaanse muziek. Ahmad Zahir was de eerste echte enige superster van dit Pashtunland. Hij stierf in een auto-ongeluk op zijn 33e verjaardag, 14 juni 1979. Een half jaar later vielen de Russen binnen.
Lang gelee kreeg ik 2 van zijn cassettes in handen en ik vond ze heel erg leuk. Hij is zoet-gevooisd en heeft zelfs Dalidah op z'n repertoir. Zijn muziek is een speciale mix van Afghaanse, Indiase en Europese klanken. Een vleugje Parijs ontwaarde ik zowaar.
Toen ik in de hoofdstad een nieuwe Afghaanse shop ontdekte wist ik dus waarnaar te zoeken en heb me vervolgens een stapeltje aangeschaft.
Dit is een hele leuke want er doet ook een zangeres mee, Paryla heet ze volgens mij.

Mônica Vasconcelos – The São Paulo Tapes: Brazilian Resistance Songs (2017)
Bossa nova might have been forged in a spirit of futurism and progress, but within a few years of its birth its leading songwriters had to address Brazil’s brutal military dictatorship. Here São Paulo-born, London-based singer Mônica Vasconcelos and producer Robert Wyatt collect 10 Brazilian protest songs from the ’60s and ’70s. To avoid censorship, the original versions had cunningly disguised lyrics with blandly generalised expressions of love, longing and carnival; but Vasconcelos can address each song’s mournful, militant subtext.
Her deliciously sad voice emphasises how Chico Buarque’s fugue-like Angelica is about political prisoners who were “disappeared” by military authorities; or how the “carnival” in Ivan Lins’ Abre Alas is a metaphor for liberation.
Throughout, her Anglo-Brazilian band play smooth bossa nova with plenty of bite, transforming Taiguara’s proggy, psychedelic Sete Cenas de Imyra into a dizzying samba in the unsettling time signature of 7/8. — Guardian

In 1969, the Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso was arrested by the military dictatorship and exiled, along with his fellow Tropicalia singer Gilberto Gil, to London. His 1971 song “London, London”, casts his dislocation as an alienation so complete he is reduced to spotting literal aliens: “I am lonely in London without fear . . . my eyes go looking for flying saucers in the sky”.
Half a century later, the London-based Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos — a couple of decades younger than the Tropicalia generation — revisits their protest songs, works that defied or, in some cases, proudly embraced censorship. They work with a variety of techniques: historical analogy for Aldir Blanc, who casts the coup supporters’ “Freedom Marches in the Name Of Family And God” as medieval crusades on “Agnus Sei”, and revisits a 1910 rebellion against ill-treatment by Black sailors on “Mestra-sala Dos Mares”. “Sete Cenas De Imyra”, a richly complex narrative by Taiguara Chalar da Silva, uses Amerindian imagery to paint an alternately utopian and dystopian picture of Brazilian history, with time signatures close to Progressive Rock. (Its parent album, Imyra, Tayra, Ipy, was seized from shops and destroyed within three days of its release in 1976.)
Then there are invocations of the spirit of Carnival and Samba, from Ivan Lins on “Abre Alas”, reappropriating Carnival as a symbol of Liberation rather than nationhood; and Blanc, again, invoking the honk of the cuica, a characteristically Brazilian drum, on “O Ronco Da Cuíca” (the eponymous sound here represented by Yaron Stavi’s savagely bowed double bass).
Some of the songs take on the state headlong. Chico Buarque’s “Angélica” is sung in the voice of a mother, Zuzu Angel, seeking answers about the fate of her murdered son, a student activist.
Robert Wyatt’s production sets Vasconcelos’s voice, cool yet earthy, amid a small band: Ife Tolentino’s guitar is a constant accompaniment, with Liam Noble occasionally running jazzy piano extemporisations. The album ends with Veloso’s song, Vasconcelos too still looking for those flying saucers. — FT
