  • 02/22/18--05:37: Tony Banks – Five (2018)
  • 71%2BczR9KBPL._SL1200_.jpg320 kbps | 134 MB | LINKS

ormer Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks will launch his new orchestral album Five.Five will launch on February 2 via BMG Records and features a collection of five compositions that were written by Banks, with the album produced by his long-time collaborator Nick Davis.

It’ll be his third orchestral album and follows 2004’s Seven: A Suite For Orchestra and 2012’s Six Pieces For Orchestra.

Orchestrator and conductor Nick Ingman is also involved with the project and agreed to collaborate after Banks played him some of the demo material.

In the past, Ingman has worked with David Bowie, the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

A statement on the release reads: “The impetus for Five was a commission for the 70th Cheltenham Music Festival in 2014, for which Banks composed the original version of what now appears as the opening track Prelude To A Million Years.

‘Hundred Acres’ finds Carey at his most confident, mature, and grounded, writing the strongest songs of his career. At its core, the album is a poetic treatise on what is truly necessary in life, a surprisingly utilitarian art project that underscores the power of enduring. Carey challenges himself and the listener to strive for a near-utopian ideal of returning to a simpler way of life, and loving those around you, to heal personal wounds.

Carey employed a smaller, more focused scale of instrumentation on ‘Hundred Acres’, centered around guitar, synths, pedal steel, strings, drums and percussion, with his soothing vocals front and center — more distinct than ever. In effect, the album’s production echoes its underlying message: the beauty in simplicity. Relying on more traditional song structures instead of the Steve Reich-ian repetitions of his past work, a new balance is struck that creates something unique. The result is a collection of poetic yet clear-eyed songs that both stand brightly on their own and tightly weave together to create a powerful album.

Hailu MergiaSometimes a story comes full circle in the most unexpected way. Ethiopian keyboard and accordion maestro, Hailu Mergia, has enjoyed a well-deserved renaissance with the reissues of his classic albums on Brian Shimkovitz’ label Awesome Tapes from Africa: Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument: Shemonmuanaye, Tche Belew and Wede Harer Guzo.
However, Mergia has not been resting on his laurels. He has been on the road with his trio with drummer Tony Buck and bassist Mike Majkowski and has tested new material that now sees the light of day on Lala Belu. It is a fresh sound and a new beginning that still has ties to Mergia’s original sound, but with an aesthetic that is closer to jazz than Mergia has been before.
Working in a trio format at first seems like…

    93 MB  320 ** FLAC

…a limitation considering the richness of the funky band sound on Tche Belew and Wede Harer Guzo, but is it turns out, the music on Lala Belu is perhaps the most complete and varied expression of Mergia’s musicality. The opening track, “Tazita,” is a fine example of the musical metamorphosis that Mergia is capable of. It starts out as a slow blues-shuffle with brushing organ and arabesque accordeon and there’s a beautiful passage with bowed bass from Majkowski that suddenly gives way to an up-tempo section with freewheeling acoustic jazz and spacey synthesizer beeps. It all ends in an acoustic bass explosion and fusion-like soloing from Mergia. It’s a nine minute plus composition of epic proportions, not only in terms of length, but also development and style.

The album also provides irresistible grooves like “Addis Nat” and the first single, “Gum Gum,” with a delicious, swampy Ethiopian organ riff and tasty hi-hat playing from Tony Buck. It is easy to imagine how this trio can build up a party and the invitation to a singalong part also comes on the title track where Mergia chants to a groove that goes straight to the body. Like a true album, the music ends on a more reflective note with a lyrical solo piano piece from Mergia. Any pianist looking for inspiration should check out Mergia’s use of the Ethiopian scales that create the same mesmerizing effect as heard in the music of Ethiopian pianist Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guébrou. It is a fitting way to end a wonderful album that shows Mergia at the top of his game.

Personnel: Hailu Mergia: keyboards, piano, organ, accordeon; Tony Buck: drums; Mike Majkowski: bass.

If ukuleles make their way back onto the pop charts, you can probably thank Vance Joy.

The Australian singer-songwriter delivers an exciting sophomore effort with “Nation of Two,” a 13-track collection in which he proves he isn’t too cool to play a little uke, banjo or even that guitar-ukulele hybrid known as a guitalele.

Joy, born James Keogh, had a breakout hit with 2013’s ukulele-led “Riptide” and became the opening act for Taylor Swift. This is his time to really shine — and he seizes it.

The sensitive strummer links up with several veteran songwriters — including three tunes with Dave Bassett and three with Dan Wilson — for an album of very personal love songs. Joy is all over the CD, writing or co-writing every song and even contributing to the cover art.

The clear standout track is the alt-rock anthem “We’re Going Home” but other beauties include the uke-led ditty “Saturday Sun,” the slow-burning “Alone With Me” and the achingly beautiful “I’m With You.”

If you yearn for music by Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers and even early Ed Sheeran, these are your jams — earthy, folky and honest. Joy’s songs are nicely not overly produced, allowing a little charming vocal strain every once in a while.

Joy’s co-writers tend to elevate his songs into something a bit more substantial, whether it’s with a brass section or strings, pushing him to go bigger. The four tunes he is credited with writing alone are clearly the weakest, but also the most personal.

August, 1970: With Jim Morrison’s ongoing Miami obscenity trial casting an ominous shadow over the band, The Doors flew to England to play the Isle of Wight Festival. Waiting for them at “The Last Great Festival” were over 600,000 fans who had already torn down the barriers, crashed the gates, and enjoyed performances by the world’s top acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell. The Doors took the stage at 2 am, playing with the weight of the trial on their backs, and showed fans they still had the magic that had propelled them to the top during the Summer of Love. “We played with a controlled fury and Jim was in fine vocal form,” said Doors organist Ray Manzarek. “He sang for all he was worth, but moved nary a muscle. Dionysus had been shackled.” Less than a year later, The Doors were no more. Here, for the very first time, is the last Doors concert ever filmed. The Doors: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

Recorded over four days at Sound Emporium in Nashville, the 12-track set was produced by Phillips (guitar/vocals/keyboards) and cut largely live in the studio as a trio with Jerry Roe (drums) and Lex Price (bass). Mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists) and engineered by Mike Stankiewicz, the album delivers its poetic truths in Phillips’ peerless melodic sensibilities, relayed via vocal performances that balance intensity and vulnerability.

“I made a commitment to myself not to sink into despair,” explains Phillips, “I’m tracing a longer narrative here. We’ve been through some of this before – not just our country, but the civilization as a whole.” Phillips sees in Widdershins a connection to his earliest work with Grant Lee Buffalo. “That was also a time of intense social anxiety. The Gulf War, the LA riots – everything became cranked up. Then a few years later there was the earthquake we lived through, which also made for a time of uneasiness. I was in a heightened state when I wrote that stuff – as I am now.”

Hailed by Mother Jones as “criminally underappreciated,” the California-born singer, songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, actor, film composer and visual artist began his career in the early ‘90s as the frontman of the acclaimed trio Grant-Lee Buffalo. Once named “male vocalist of the year” by Rolling Stone, USA Today called him a “soulful balladeer” while Uncut hailed him as a “distinguished U.S. songwriter.”
