Επανεμφανίσεις συγκροτημάτων δεν συνέβησαν μόνο στις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, αλλά και στη δεκαετία του ’60. Για παράδειγμα οι σπουδαίοι Mississippi Sheiksέσκασαν μύτη και αυτοί στην εποχή τής αναζωογόνησης του blues, υπενθυμίζοντας το παρελθόν τους και την πρωτοκαθεδρία τους, δεκαετίες πριν, στο χώρο.

Το γκρουπ ξεκίνησε τη μικρή στο χρόνο νέα πορεία του το 1961, όταν ένα πρωταρχικό μέλος, ο κιθαρίστας Walter Vinson (1901-1975), συνεργάστηκε με δύο άλλους προπολεμικούς μουσικούς, τον πιανίστα Monkey Joe (Jesse Coleman) και τον κιθαρίστα Sam Hill. Στο μοναδικό session που κατάφεραν να πραγματοποιήσουν, στις αρχές των sixties, για την Riverside (Σικάγο, 6 και 8 Σεπτεμβρίου 1961) εμφανίστηκαν επίσης, μαζί τους, ο μπασίστας Pops Foster και ο ντράμερ Earl Watkins. Τα κομμάτια τους που κυκλοφόρησαν τότε ήταν τέσσερα συνολικώς – όσα παρουσιάστηκαν σε δύο συλλογές τής Riverside.

Ένα δεύτερο sessionθα πραγματοποιηθεί σχεδόν μια δεκαετία αργότερα, τον Φεβρουάριο του 1972, όταν οι SamChatmon κιθάρα, φωνή, Walter Vinson κιθάρα, φωνή, Carl Martin βιολί, μαντολίνο, φωνή και Ted Bogan μπάσο, θα βρεθούν μαζί κάτω από το όνομα The New Mississippi Sheiks ηχογραφώντας ένα ολόκληρο άλμπουμ για την Rounder. Ήταν το πρώτο και τελευταίο τους long play.

This 3 x CD collection features a number of live appearances made by Santana at various junctures across their lengthy career, all of which were the subject of FM radio broadcasts at the time of the shows in question, and which make plain what a timeless, artful and graceful group of master musicians this collective have always been. Kicking off with a delightful performance the band gave at the Berkeley Community Theater, on 6th February 1970, six months after their stunning appearance at Woodstock in August 69, which bought Santana worldwide attention. With bonus cuts on the first CD too, taken from a gig during the same tour at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, and songs played for US television, disc one of this set provides a superb introduction to Santana s early live repertoire The second CD here features the group s classic performance from 1975 that they gave at the Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, while touring in support of their 1974 jazz-funk inspired Borboletta album. This recording finds Santana at their mid-1970s finest playing a set that features the previously unreleased track Times Waits For No One . On the final disc here, we find Santana in 1981, playing a 4th July, Independence Day show at the Cape Cod Coliseum in Massachusetts, with new lead vocalist Alex Ligertwood in tow, and the group on superb form shortly following the release of their Zebop album, one of the group s best sellers. In completion this collection reveals a band who have not just survived in a business not known for treating longer term artists with much support , but who have positively flourished and who remain, almost 50 years since coming together, a glorious live experience and a musical institution whose influence has never been more potent.
