Pageants – Forever (2018)
320 kbps | 87 MB | LINKS
Had Pageants dropped their debut LP Forever in 2011-12, during the band’s infancy – when some of the songs contained herein had actually been written and recorded – the album would have stood better than half a chance of exuding the brainy cleverness and eliciting the whimsical, carefree glee to which it so obviously strives.
Instead, the album and its lead-up singles finally see the light of day in 2017-18, now that kitschy, tongue-in-cheek indie pop has worn out its welcome and when we have far better things to exert our eroding attention spans on other than Pageants’ brand of faux-psych pop.
The majority of the album is maddeningly inoffensive, slightly gauzy West Coast indie pop of which there are a dime a dozen nowadays. There are patches of Beach Housiness that truly make you appreciate that band’s deft sense of toeing the border of pathos and slo-mo juggling of weightlessness and gravity, none of which is found here in Forever. Song titles like “Cacti for Clothes”, “Lingr”, and “Calico Sunrise” are simply willfully strange names for tunes completely bereft of said weirdness.
“Chai” (the Hebrew symbol conveying fortune of wealth, not the delicious spiced tea) and “Musings of the Tide” are actually bits of savory bacon floating in this otherwise drab, homogeneous pea-soup of an album. There are finally hints of grit and uneasiness juxtaposing the overt poppiness of the tunes – something West Coast pop/rock artists have long excelled at capturing, yet is not otherwise remotely offered throughout the rest of Forever.
Unfortunately, Forever falls well short of any tasty expectations Rebecca Coleman had mustered when she left Avi Buffalo in 2011 to, in so many words, make the kind of music she wanted to make. With boundaries truly being pushed in a number of pop/rock arenas these days, Coleman grasping to her former band’s cod-adventurousness seems likes such a wasted endeavor.

Dálava – The Book of Transfigurations (2017)
On the tender and haunting The Book of Transfigurations vocalist Julia Ulehla and her partner guitarist Aram Bajakian interpret thirteen Moravian folk songs with a personal and contemporary touch. Joining them in the ensemble Dálava are a quartet of Canadian improvisers who add an additional layer of spontaneous lyricism to this memorable music.
Majority of these ballads come from transcriptions that Ulehla’s Czech great grandfather made. Although the melodies, as well as the words, are original Ulehla and Bajakian have arranged them with a modernistic twist thus underscoring the timelessness of the material. The poignant “Dyž sem já šel pres hory / The rocks began to crumble,” about the tragic impact of war on the individual,…
…opens with drummer Dylan van der Schyff thunderous percussion and Bajakian’s blistering guitar. Ulehla’s passionate vocals echo against the backdrop of energetic and vibrant refrains. Bajakian expresses the primal chagrin within the tune with his rock influenced solo.
Keyboardist Tyson Naylor’s tolling notes anchor the hypnotic and melancholic “Vyletěla holubička / The bloody wall.” The story of a murder told by various narrators has a dramatic touch as Ulehla’s rich voice soars over instrumental sound swells. The latter culminate into symphonic fragments that usher in the tragic conclusion.
Ulehla’s chant like articulation of the wistful “Vydala máti / Mother gave away her daughter” is like an ethereal prayer over sparse and resonant tones from her bandmates. Cellist Peggy Lee’s fluttering lines and Naylor’s wistful and reverberating accordion underscore the tune’s spiritual edge.
The lullaby influenced “Dyby ňa moja maměnka stara /Grass” matches otherworldly sonic effects with Ulehla’s emotive singing. Bassist Colin Cowan’s muscular lines anchor the collective cinematic harmonies that underscore the piece’s innocent yearning and hints of double entendre.
The Book of Transfigurations is an intimate and elegant paean to Ulehla’s ancestral heritage. It is far from a mere retelling of a historic cultural expression destined for museums. On the contrary, what makes the album unique is its vivid and soulful rendition of this slice of popular art, thus preserving it by exposing its enduring relevance.
Personnel: Julia Ulehla:vocals; Aram Bajakian acoustic & electric guitars, percussion; Peggy Lee: cello; Tyson Naylor piano, accordion, Farfisa organ, Hammond A-100, Wurlitzer, Rhodes; Colin Cowan: double bass & electric bass; Dylan van der Schyff drums & percussion.

VA – Jeffology: A Guitar Chronicle (2015)
320 kbps | 117 MB | LINKS
Jeffology: “A Guitar Chronicle” is a tribute to Jeff Beck, one of the greatest blues/rock guitar players in rock history, and features Gregg Bissonette, Bruce Bouillet, Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, Warren DeMartini, Tony Franklin, Paul Gilbert, Jake E. Lee, Steve Lukather, George Lynch, Mick Mars and more! Only five of the eleven songs are instrumental (“Led Boots” with Campbell, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” with Collen, “Head For Backstage Pass” with Bouillet, “Rice Pudding” with Lee, and “Behind The Veil” with Lukather), a bit odd since Beck was more noted for his instrumentals, and didn’t sing himself for the most part. However a fine collection of tracks in honor of the legendary, influential English guitarist.
