The capitol of Mongolia is Ulanbataar. Ulaanbatar means "red hero". I visited once and thought of it as an ugly town full of very friendly, modest folks. Their colourfullness contrasted with the grey, concrete and squareness of the city.

There are many homeless people and in winter they live deep underground, in the crawspaces to service the pipelines of the city central heating. The smell i remembered was nasty. Their chief in those days  was a 13 year old boy, i've been told.

In this kubik environment i saw one round building and it was red. Something to do with culture, my friend and guide Gerelee told me. Well, that is how i remember it, but i can't find any mentioning or picture of it in bing or google. The only mental proof i have that not far from this special place i bought this cassette from a small kiosk.

Chimed & Seeje - Mongolian country songs

De hoofdstad van Mongolieis Ulaanbataar. Ulaanbataar betekent "rode held". I was er ooit en vond het een lelijke stad vol aardige bescheiden mensen. Zij waren zo kleurrijk dat het vreemd afstak tegen het rechthoekige grijze beton.

D'r zijn veel daklozen die in de vreselijke winters onder de grond leven: in de kruipruimtes van de stadsverwarming. Het stonk er vreselijk. De baas van dieondergrondsen was een 13 jarige jongen, zo werd mij verteld.

In deze kubieke omgeving zag ik een (1) rond gebouw. En het was rood. Ik herinner me dat mijn vriend en gids Gerelee iets meldde over een cultureel gebouw. Maar op Bing en Google kan ik heden niks over dat bouwsel terugvinden. Het enige mentale bewijs dat ik heb is dat ik deze cassette kocht bij een kleine kiosk daar vlakbij.

Part western balladeer, part borderland chronicler, songwriter George St. Clair is a master of conjuring feelings and images of lives past and present. Growing up on the high plains of Texas put George in touch with the vastness of the American West, and his songs evoke the dry deserts, rolling grasslands, and high mountains of his West Texas homeland. Living for the past several years in the UK has given him a renewed perspective on the land where he grew up, and these reflections take shape in Ballads of Captivity and Freedom.

George St. Clair’s family background of ranching and wildcat oil prospecting spurred him to probe the controversial history of that part of the world in his songwriting. He grew up in and around places where vicious battles were fought over the possession of land, and where large numbers of indigenous people were corralled into encampments. George’s bilingual mother made sure to regularly take her children deep into Mexico, where they learned Spanish and acquired a broad view of what it means to be American.

I Need To Start A Garden amplifies Heynderickx’s best qualities. Collectively, the songs appear rooted in the natural world. There are birdhouses, fig trees and honeycomb; coastlines, sunsets, a hornet’s nest. In one song, “the sky is all indigo”, while another finds the narrator competing with insects in the bath. Full of symbols and codes, they evoke the lyrical nature writing of Nick Drake or Vashti Bunyan, but delivered like a less refined Sharon Van Etten. Heynderickx is accompanied by fellow Portland musicians Phillip Rogers on drums, Tim Sweeney on upright bass, Lily Breshears on keys and Denzel Mendoza on trombone, but these elements are essentially discrete shading for Heynderickx’s voice and atmospheric electric guitar playing, reminsicent of Jeff Buckley.

Heynderickx draws inspiration from disparate sources including Miyazaki films (“No Face”) and archetypal Western standards of feminine beauty (“Untitled God Song”). They are often autobiographical, but not overtly so – “Drinking Song” is based on Heynderickx’s experiences as a student in Prague, while “Jo” mourns the death of a close friend. “Worth It” is a note to self – a pep song Heynderickx wrote after a period of self-doubt. “Maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been worthless, or maybe I’ve maybe I’ve been worth it,” she howls while the guitars and drums surge in raging sympathy.

Question: is there a code of ethics for bloggers? There must be, although it might be unwritten. For example it is not cool to take music from another blog and repost it without reference. Even worse it is, i guess, if the culprit is so bold to use the same link as the original to download it.

But is it okay to post a record that i only have on tape?  Should one not only post music if the LP or CD is in possession?

Todays contribution is a tape i have for many many years. But i never knew who the artist was. Ghana - Old is Gold i had written on the cover.

Some days ago i tried a new app on my phone: shazamm. You'll probably know it: you point your phone in the direction of the music and within seconds you'll recieve title and artist.
And you know what? The classic highlife i have enjoyed all these years is created by Master Bob.

I was a bit surprised, because the other music i know from Master Bob Akwaboa (Thank you Global Grooves!) doesn't sound the same.

So the choice is yours. If you are a person who is strict in principle, you perhaps should not download this fine collection. If your concience is more elastic, you really should. This is awesome music.

Vraagje: is er een ethische code voor bloggers? Dat moet haast wel, zelfs al issie ongeschreven. Het is bijvoorbeeld niet sjiek om muziek van andere blogs te presenteren zonder te vermelden waar je het vandaan hebt. Nog lulliger is het als die boef ook nog eens jouw links gebruikt. Dat doe je niet.

Maar is het oké om iets te posten waarvan de alleen de cassette hebt? Zou iemand alleen spul moeten posten als ie zelf de elpee of CD in bezit heeft?

De bijdrage van vandaag is een tape die ik al jaaaaaaren in bezit heb, maar niet weet van wie het precies is. Ghana - Goud van oud, had ik op het hoesje gezet.  

Een dag of wat terug probeerde ik een nieuwe app op mijn slimfoon, Shazamm. Je richt je gsm op de muziek  en verdomd! De klassieke highlife waarvan ik al zolang geniet is gecreëerd door ene Master Bob.
Ik was wel wat verbaasd, want de master Bob Akwaboa die ik al kende (dank, Global Grooves!), klinkt anders.

Dus nu is de keuze aan jou: ben je iemand van de harde principes, een persoon van de letter der wet?
Dan kan je deze download misschien  beter aan je voorbij laten gaan. Maar ben je iets rekkelijker van geest, grijp je kans, want de muziek is top. Van Master Bob.

Charles Edward Daniels (born October 28, 1936) is an American multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, and singer, known for his contributions to country, bluegrass, and Southern rock music. He is perhaps best known for his number-one country hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. Daniels has been active as a singer and musician since the 1950s.
