Emma Frank – Ocean Av (2018)

Ocean Av was recorded with two of the best musicians in New York: pianist Aaron Parks and drummer Jim Black. Frank’s songs sit comfortably between jazz and singer-songwriter artpop, comparable in approach and quality to the work of acclaimed young artists such as Becca Stevens and Gretchen Parlato. Her cool, plainspoken vocal delivery makes some listeners hear her music as “folk”, but the subtle rhythmic variations and harmonic approach betray her roots in jazz. The poetry of her lyrics, perhaps, points to her study of literature at Montreal’s McGill University. Call it what you want, Frank would surely say, but check it out.

Chris Farlowe was one of the hottest young British artists to emerge from the Sixties R&B club scene, much admired by Tom Jones and Mick Jagger. Farlowe’s band the Thunderbirds included top class musicians, notably guitarist Albert Lee and keyboard virtuoso Dave Greenslade, always given generous solo space to match Farlowe’s powerful vocals.

The live sound of the group in action is captured on this 2 CD set of historic radio show recordings. Among the 27 tracks rescued from the BBC archives, are such seminal performances as Rockin Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu, Mr. Pitiful, Think, Ride On Baby and Paint It Black.
Chris Farlowe tells about meeting Otis Redding in the informative CD liner notes by Repertoire’s Chris Welch, and describes the excitement of delivering Thunderbirds music nationwide, thanks to the BBC and their professional, high quality broadcasts, now available to be enjoyed, one more time

Laura Benitez & The Heartache – With All Its Thorns (2018)

Laura Benitez and the Heartache will release their third full-length, With All Its Thorns, which, despite its name, is something to behold as Benitez tackles the prickly aspects of relationships with keen insight, unique perspectives, and heart.

With All Its Thorns starts off with the Tex-Mex flair of the lively “Something Better Than a Broken Heart” which with its opening line “I’d always thought I’d get that diamond ring” and accordion work (courtesy of Billy Wilson who plays throughout) instantly grabs your attention. That’s followed by ten more songs, told by Benitez’s distinct voice, that strike a chord, whether they’re breaking your heart or lifting it up.

The slow shuffle of “Easier Things To Do” conveys the thought that even though things, whether in work or love, aren’t always we easy, we shouldn’t avoid them; while the jaunty “Our Remember Whens” tells a darling story about looking forward to being able to reminisce with a new love, and the rollicking “Whiskey Makes Me Love You” where she asks, “How can you say it’s wrong when that amber starts to pour” extols the virtues of the favored beverage.

While Benitez is the primary songwriter, The Heartache – Bob Spector (acoustic and electric guitar), Ian Sutton (pedal steel), Mike Anderson (electric and upright bass), and Steve Pearson (drums) – elevate her lyrics with their dynamic musicianship whether with the dark backbeat on the murder ballad “In Red,” the haunting fiddle (courtesy of Steve Kallai) and steel on the stirring “Ghostship,” a true story of a fire in an artistic collective, or capturing the conjunto feel of “Almost the Right One/Casa Mi Cielo.”

With All Its Thorns is rounded out by the astutely told tale of two cheaters entitled “Secrets,” the charming “The Fool I Am Right Now” and the bluegrass infused closer, “Nora Went Down the Mountain” which tells the story of an ordinary woman who, one day, simply picked up and left.

Alphonse Karr is quoted as having said, “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.” Benitez and company adeptly tackle life’s sadness, heartaches, and struggles on With All Its Thorns, and in doing so have exposed the beauty behind those thorns, capturing something incredibly pure, poignant, and timeless.

The Native Cats – John Sharp Toro (2018)

a0458173779_16.jpg320 kbps | 79 MB | LINKS

Tasmanian pub rock iconoclasts the Native Cats have, after ten years, become completely unmoored. Chloe Alison Escott read Nevada, spun out into an unplanned gender crisis, then finally transitioned, changed her name and became one of those true authentic selves you hear about on the news; Julian Teakle read The Big Midweek, stopped writing Peter Hook bass lines and started writing Steve Hanley ones instead. Metamorphosis! Tumult! And a new album: at last, February 2, 2018 on RIP Society, their meticulous masterpiece, John Sharp Toro.

The timeline tells the story. They recorded ten songs in a day at their home studio in South Hobart. They didn’t touch any of it for almost a year while Chloe’s whole life exploded and reassembled itself. Then Chloe channeled some of that personal transformation into the album, retaining Julian’s invigorating bass lines but radically re-recording and rearranging everything else. The end result merges the chaotic urgency of Swell Maps and the Fall with the idiosyncratic production and labyrinthine album concepts of Blood Orange and Kendrick Lamar. There are recurring lyrics, haunting reprises, codes upon codes, foreign voices, personal archive recordings, distorted synths that arrive without warning like floodlights cutting through fog. It’s about queer isolation and loneliness, transfiguration, the ways that lives and relationships continue after they’ve been altered; it’s also about digital spaces, the US Republican Party in the second half of the 20th century, and James M. Cain’s opera-scene noir Serenade, the origin of the album’s title.

But beneath the coils and complications is the most bracing and immediate album the Native Cats have ever recorded. There’s life in every corner of every song: guest drummer Sarah Hennies sends the band twisting and turning into new territory with just a kick and a snare; Julian has never been more animated or inventive in his bass playing than he is here, as he makes each song bounce, swing, or stampede as he sees fit; and Chloe sings mightily and without inhibition at last, with a voice that’s entirely her own, every word lit up in neon, every line rich with meaning. It’s John Sharp Toro, the exhilarating queer post-punk puzzle-box mystery thriller you never knew you needed and you certainly never expected the Native Cats to be the ones to deliver.
