Robo Arigo & His Konastone Majesty – Sexy Thing (1982, Reissue 2017)
Robo Arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from Nigeria’s Ogun State. A founding member of Pogo Ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on Sexy Thing too.
One listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it’s pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo’s heart lay. Especially when he gets to slap it. The slapping starts early on ‘Konastone Ponk’, a dippy, funky track where Robo implores that if his music ‘touches your soul, get up and dance.’ The interplay between bass and guitar is magic – it’s clear that Eno Louis is Nile Rodgers to Robo’s Rick James, with a bit of Prince and Parliament thrown in for good measure. The funk feels dark and dangerous on…
…’Girls Reservation’ and gets seriously slinky on ‘Sexy Thing’. The sound is clean and the production is stripped back and funky, a sound Robo would finesse as a producer with his Robbosoneex Music Company in Benin. Listen to the audacious cover of ‘Get Up, Stand Up’, and tell me that you’re not convinced that very Bob Marley songs needs a slap bass break in the middle.

JEFF HAMILTON TRIO live from San Pedro
Στο Jeff Hamilton Trio, ένα από τα πιο δραστήρια, αμερικανικά jazz-triosτων τελευταίων ετών, έχουμε αναφερθεί κι άλλες φορές εδώ στο δισκορυχείον. Όπως είχαμε σημειώσει πριν κάμποσα χρόνια… το όνομα του ντράμερ Jeff Hamilton κάποιοι μπορεί να το έχουν στο νου τους από την πολυποίκιλη συνεργασία του (σε CD, DVD και συναυλίες) με την Diana Krall, όμως εγώ το θυμάμαι από το τρίο με τ’ όνομά του, για το άλμπουμ τού οποίου “Symbiosis” [CAPRI, 2009] είχα γράψει στο τεύχος 201 του Jazz & Τζαζ.

Παρακολουθώντας, λοιπόν, το συγκεκριμένο trio περί τη μια δεκαετία έρχομαι να πω –με αφορμή το πιο πρόσφατο CDτου που τιτλοφορείται “Live from San Pedro”[CAPRI, 2018]– πως έχουμε να κάνουμε μ’ ένα ιδιαίτερης διαύγειας σχήμα (πάντα οι Tamir Hendelman πιάνο και Christoph Luty κοντραμπάσο θα συμπληρώνουν τη line-up), που ποτέ δεν ξεφεύγει από τον προκαθορισμένο ρόλο του. Πού είναι ποιος; Μα η επίδειξη ενός ατελείωτου swinging, με τη χρήση των απολύτως απαραίτητων μέσων. Των τριών οργάνων δηλαδή (πιάνο, μπάσο, ντραμς), των οποίων οι προαναφερόμενοι είναι άψογοι χειριστές, και βεβαίως της γνώσης (από τους ίδιους) όλων των κεφαλαίων τής τζαζ παράδοσης. Όπως το έχουμε τονίσει κι άλλες φορές… τι να πει κανείς, όταν τρεις Αμερικανοί, άσσοι οργανοπαίκτες, αποφασίζουν να προβάλλουν εκείνα με τα οποία μεγάλωσαν; Γιατί αυτό που αποδίδουν ζωντανά εδώ (Alvas Showroom, San Pedro, Καλιφόρνια, 8/1/2017) οι Hamilton, Hendelman και Luty, είναι εκείνο που όλοι μας φανταζόμαστε. Όπερ... κλασικό αμερικανικό songbook (“Poinciana” των Nat Simon και Buddy Bernier από το 1936, “I have dreamed” των Rodgers / Hammerstein, “In walked bud” του Monk), συνθέσεις φίλων και βεβαίως πρωτότυπο δικό τους υλικό, άπαντα παραταγμένα με γνώμονα όχι μόνο την επικοινωνία των τριών, αλλά και τη μετακύλιση αυτής της ακριβώς της εσωτερικής επικοινωνίας προς τον κόσμο.
Η συνταγή είναι αλάνθαστη. Ο κόσμος χαίρεται και απολαμβάνει κάθε στιγμή τού Jeff Hamilton Trioκαι το δείχνει τακτικότατα, επευφημώντας ζωηρά και με πάθος.
