Following the digital release of his acclaimed solo album ‘Mountain’ in late 2017, Howie Payne has recorded an entirely acoustic version of the album. ‘Mountain (Acoustic)’ will be released on February 2nd.

“I thought it’d be quite cool to record the songs as I’ve been playing them at the acoustic shows, just as they were written, in their purest form with no overdubs or anything like that, says Howie. “I went into Hoxa Studio in London and recorded them in an afternoon. It’s the same songs, so it’s connected, but it has it’s own vibe and is it’s own thing, like a sketch is to a painting.”

Γεννημένος το 1914 στην Jewell της Georgia, ο Buddy Mossαποτελεί μία από τις πιο σημαντικές προσωπικότητες του piedmont στυλ και οπωσδήποτε μία από τις πιο απρόσμενες ανακαλύψεις του blues revival. Τούτο το λέμε επειδή τον σπουδαίο αυτόν bluesman δεν τον ανακάλυψε κάποιος ερευνητής, μιας και ο ίδιος, από μόνος του, αποφάσισε να εμφανισθεί ενώπιον κοινού, το 1964, όταν παραβρέθηκε σ’ ένα live τού φίλου του Josh White. Όπως γράφει ο Bruce Bastin στο κλασικό βιβλίο του Crying for the Carolines [November Books, London 1971], ο Buddy Moss άρχισε να μαθαίνει κιθάρα ακούγοντας τους δίσκους τού Blind Blake και τού Blind Lemon Jefferson, παίρνοντας ακόμη περισσότερα στοιχεία από το παίξιμο τού Barbecue Bob.

Το πρώτο sessionκάτω από το όνομά του συνέβη τον Ιανουάριο του 1933, μολονότι ο Moss ηχογράφησε για πρώτη φορά, για την Columbia, το 1930, παίζοντας φυσαρμόνικα για τους Georgia Cotton Pickers (γκρουπ στο οποίο συμμετείχαν, επίσης, οι Barbecue Bob και Curley Weaver). Παρ’ όλη την επιτυχία που γνώρισε με τις προσωπικές εγγραφές του, στη δεκαετία του ’30, όπως και με τις κατά καιρούς επανεμφανίσεις του (1941-42), ο Buddy Moss παρέμεινε ένας άξιος αλλά επισκιασμένος καλλιτέχνης ακόμη και την εποχή του blues revival.

Το 1964 ο Josh Whiteέδωσε ένα live στην Atlanta της Georgia και ο Buddy Mossθεώρησε σωστό να βρεθεί εκεί, τιμώντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο τον καλό του φίλο. Οι ερευνητές, λογικώς, θα έπεσαν από τα σύννεφα. Χωρίς απολύτως κανέναν κόπο είχαν εμπρός του ένα «όνομα» από τα thirties, πανέτοιμο, μάλιστα, να προβεί σε νέες ηχογραφήσεις.

Αφού πρώτα κλείστηκαν κάποια live, το Μάιο του ’66 ο Eugene “Buddy” Moss θα μπει στο στούντιο της Columbia (στο Nashville του Tennessee) για ένα προσωπικό session, το οποίο για πολλά χρόνια παρέμενε ανέκδοτο (εμφανίστηκε για πρώτη φορά σ’ ένα CD της Biograph το 1995). Παρά ταύτα, το 1970, ο Arnold Caplinτης Biograph, θα ρίξει στην αγορά ένα ολοκληρωμένο LP τού Buddy Moss, που ήταν ζωντανά ηχογραφημένο στο Gas Light Auditorium, της Washington D.C., την 10η Ιουνίου 1966. Το άλμπουμ, περιττό να ειπωθεί, ήταν έξοχο. Ο Moss είχε βρεθεί σε πολύ μεγάλη φόρμα, αναπαράγοντας εκ του φυσικού το ευγενές piedmont στυλ.

Στα χρόνια του ’70 ο Buddy Moss θα μπει ελάχιστες φορές στο στούντιο, πεθαίνοντας παντελώς ξεχασμένος, στην Atlanta, το 1984.
