TOC έξοχο noisy krautrock κ.λπ.
Οι TOCείναι ένα πολύ παράξενο σχήμα – ενώ από τα πιο παράξενα, που έχω ακούσει τον τελευταίο καιρό. Αποτελούνται από τρεις μουσικούς (Jérémie Ternoy fender rhodes, piano bass, πιάνο, Ivann Cruz κιθάρες, Peter Orins ντραμς) και η μουσική που αποδίδουν στο “Will Never Play these Songs Again” [Circum-Disc, 2018] (ένα άλμπουμ τριών κομματιών – ενός 17λεπτου, ενός 18λεπτου και ενός 6λεπτου) είναι χοντρικώς… απερίγραπτη. Πάμε να δούμε ένα-ένα τα tracks…

Το “The last hit” ξεκινάει οριοθετώντας ένα θορυβώδες krautrock-ικό πλαίσιο, στο οποίο ο ελεύθερος αυτοσχεδιασμός έχει το πάνω χέρι. Έτσι, από τη μια μεριά υπάρχει η ηλεκτρική γκρούβα, που σπέρνει ακαταπόνητα το fender rhodes, με τις κιθάρες να αυτοσχεδιάζουν σ’ ένα ύφος… Henry Kaiser (εποχής Metalanguage) και από την άλλη μια διάθεση ελαφρώς τζαζο-πειραματική στα μέρη της σύνθεσης όπου πέφτουν οι τόνοι και το volume. Μνεία επίσης για τις κάπως… ακατάληπτες μπασογραμμές, από το piano bass, που φέρνουν στη μνήμη μου, στις σκληρές στιγμές τους, τους Γερμανούς Guru Guru. Πολύ ενδιαφέρον κομμάτι, που, παρόλη τη 17λεπτη διάρκειά του, πουθενά δε «σπάει».
Το 18λεπτο “Ultimate earworms” έχει λίγο διαφορετικό χαρακτήρα. Πάνω σ’ ένα σταθερό μοτίβο, που χτίζει το ρυθμικό τμήμα, τοποθετούνται τα πλήκτρα και οι κιθάρες, δημιουργώντας έναν «τοίχο» που δεν κρύβει τον ιδιόμορφο και όσο να ’ναι… ψυχεδελικό χαρακτήρα του. Οι Pink Floydτού “Ummagumma” θα μπορούσε να ήταν μιαν αρχή, αν και οι TOC… δεν καταλαβαίνουν απ’ αυτά, προχωρώντας απτόητοι προς το δικό τους αλλόκοτο ηχητικό σύμπαν (που αποτελείται από εντελώς ασυνήθιστους συνδυασμούς πειραματικού progressive rockκαι εκτραχηλισμένου αυτοσχεδιασμού, διανθισμένου με άπλετα minimal και noisy στοιχεία). Φοβερό κομμάτι και αυτό!
Το άλμπουμ θα ολοκληρωθεί με το bonus track “Lichen”, που είναι από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος του βουτηγμένο στην kraut-ίλα. (Limbus 3, Limbus 4, Xhol και τέτοια).
Είπαμε. Περίεργη μπάντα, που μετράει! Πολύ!

Western Centuries – Songs from the Deluge (2018)

Country music supergroup Western Centuries have announced their second album Songs from the Deluge to be released via Free Dirt Records on April 6th. A follow up to their well-received debut, 2016’s Weight of the World, it combines the songwriting and voices of three distinct artist into one sound representative of the diverse yet conjoined legacy of the American roots music experience.
Country singer and songwriter Cahalen Morrison has quite a following all his own from his various country projects, including with Country Hammer who were responsible for the highly-acclaimed honky tonk record The Flower of Muscle Shoals, as well as his various works with collaborator Eli West. With more than enough talent to be his own man, Morrison still often finds himself more at home sharing the stage with others.
Ethan Lawton is known for his earlier work in Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers, and also for the distinct Cajun cadence he brings to his original songs, imbibing a spice to Western Centuries beyond traditional country music. Jim Miller became known through his work with Donna the Buffalo, and adds yet another layer of unique perspective, and an additional songwriting voice to the collective. He also lends many of the lead licks to the band, but one of the best things about Western Centuries is they’re all multi instrumentalists, and along with swapping songs, they switch instruments to always keep things interesting and unexpected.
They are joined by Nokosee Fields on upright bass, and Grammy-awarded Creole legend Joel Savoy acts as co-producer on Songs from the Deluge, adding a special touch of expertise to the project.
