Rory Gallagher – Against The Grain [Remastered] (2018)

After releasing two albums in 1973 and a live, contract-fulfilling disc in 1974, Gallagher returned rested and recharged in 1975 with a new record label, Chrysalis, and a band with almost three years of hard touring under their belts. With its attention to detai, Against the Grain sounds more practiced and intricate than most of Gallagher’s previous studio discs, but still includes some of his most powerful rockers. The supercharged “Souped-Up Ford,” where Rory howls and wails, with his voice and smoking slide, and “All Around Man,” an urgent blues rocker that begins with Gallagher screaming and crying together with just his electric guitar until the band kicks in with a stop-start blues rhythm, are two of the definitive moments. “Bought and Sold” adds congas to the mix to bring a more rootsy and even jazzy feel to Rory’s table. But it’s on the acoustic tracks where the guitarist and his band really lay into the groove. Gallagher’s version of Leadbelly’s “Out On the Western Plain,” with its combination of Indian chords, American Delta folk and cowboy “yippee-ki-yay” chorus is one of the Irishman’s unheralded highlights, and “Cross Me Off Your List” is affecting in its yearning melody, subtle keyboard and minor key. A playful and forceful romp through Sam and Dave’s “I Take What I Want” shows Gallagher’s soul roots. Two bonus tracks from the 2000 reissue and recorded at these sessions are country based jams, but neither is particularly impressive. Not his best album, Against the Grain is still prime period Rory Gallagher. Its well-rounded menu of country, Delta blues, and blues-rock is indicative of his approach; though few of these songs became classics in the guitarist’s extensive catalog, they’re far more mature and eclectic than most blues-rock bands’ best work. ~by Hal Horowitz

Gallagher’s second album for Chrysalis — and last with his longstanding trio of Lou Martin (keyboards), Rod De’Ath (drums) and Gerry McAvoy (bass) — was a milestone in his career. Although Calling Card was produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and not surprisingly contained some of his most powerfully driving rockers, tracks like the acoustic “Barley & Grape Rag” and the jazzy, soulful, finger snapping title cut — a perennial concert favorite — found the Irish rocker not only exploring other musical paths, but also caught him on one of his most consistent songwriting streaks ever. Even “Do You Read Me,” the muscular opening track, is a remarkably stripped-down affair that adds subtle synths to the rugged blues rock that was Gallagher’s claim to fame. While “Moonchild,” “Country Mile,” and “Secret Agent” displayed catchy hooks, engaging riffs, and raging guitar work (the latter adds a touch of Deep Purple’s Jon Lord-styled organ to the proceedings), it’s the elegant ballad “I’ll Admit You’re Gone” that shifts the guitarist into calmer waters and proves his melodic talent was just as cutting on quieter tunes. And it’s a crime that the gorgeous “Edged in Blue,” certainly one of the artist’s saddest and most beautiful pop melodies, was overlooked in his catalog. The 1999 reissue sports track-by-track and first person liner notes from Gallagher’s brother Donal, crisp remastered sound, and two additional songs not included on previous versions, one of which, “Public Enemy (B-Girl Version),” later appeared on the Photo-Finish album in an inferior performance to this. Arguably Rory Gallagher’s finest studio effort, it was among his best and most varied batch of songs, and it is a perfect place for the curious to start their collection as well as an essential disc showing Gallagher at the peak of his powers. ~by Hal Horowitz

MARVA VON THEO πρώτα η φωνή
Οι Marva von Theo είναι ένα electro duo από την Αθήνα, με μέλη την Μάρβα Βούλγαρη (γράφει μουσικές, στίχους και τραγουδά) και τον Τεό Φοινίδη (συμπληρώνει σε μουσικές). Όλα τα όργανα που ακούγονται στο παρθενικό CD τους, το οποίον τιτλοφορείται κάπως… Poe-τικώς, ως “Dream within a Dream” [PrivatePressing, 2018], τα χειρίζεται η Βούλγαρη, ενώ υπάρχει και «βοήθεια» σε βιολί σ’ ένα track. Φυσικά τα synths και τα strong beats κυριαρχούν στις ενοργανώσεις των Marva von Theo, που ξεχωρίζουν, ως σχήμα, για πολλούς και διαφόρους λόγους.

Πρώτον, λόγω φωνής. Η Βούλγαρη τραγουδά εξαιρετικά, με πάθος και με δύναμη. Έχει φωνή δηλαδή, γεμάτη και στιβαρή, και όχι… κάτι σαν φωνή. Δεύτερον, λόγω συνθετικού και στιχουργικού ταλέντου (αμφοτέρων των συμμετεχόντων). Τούτο σημαίνει πως από τη συνεργασία των δύο προκύπτουν αληθινά τραγούδια και όχι… ρυθμοί ξεκάρφωτοι, που δεν ξέρεις τι να τους κάνεις. Τρίτον, λόγω παραγωγής και γενικότερου editing, που είναι αυτά που πρέπει να είναι «κρύβοντας» σωστά τις… παλαιές αναφορές (τις πιο πολλές φορές), και προβάλλοντας όλα εκείνα τα ηχοχρώματα (nineties-electro βασικά, trip-hop κτλ.), που είναι οπωσδήποτε ικανά, ώστε να παράσχουν μια ταυτότητα στο ακρόαμα. Και τούτο το λέω, δίχως να παραβλέπω το γεγονός πως ακόμη και το blues, μ’ έναν τρόπο ξεχωριστό, εξακολουθεί να πρωταγωνιστεί (και να εντυπωσιάζει) σε κομμάτια όπως το εισαγωγικό “Unconcern”.
Ίσως να δημιουργηθεί η εντύπωση σε ορισμένους πως τα τραγούδια των Marva von Theoείναι σκοτεινά, ερμητικά κλεισμένα σ’ έναν κόσμο που δεν μας αφορά ή εν πάση περιπτώσει αφορά σε λίγους. Δεν είναι έτσι. Βασικά, συμβαίνει ακριβώς το αντίθετο. Πρόκειται για τραγούδια που περιστρέφονται με τρόπο ουσιαστικό γύρω από τα ζητήματα των σχέσεων, αρθρώνοντας έναν όχι κοινότοπο λόγο και σίγουρα απολύτως πειστικό, που μπορεί να ενδιαφέρει τους πάντες. Βεβαίως, αυτή η πειστικότητα έχει να κάνει και με τις ερμηνείες τής Βούλγαρη, που είναι, φρονώ, το πολύ μεγάλο ατού τού άλμπουμ. Χαίρεσαι ν’ ακούς τέτοιες φωνές – πόσω μάλλον όταν ερμηνεύουν και τόσο γερά τραγούδια. Άξιοι!

The Tillers – The Tillers (2018)

It has been about five years since the Tillers released an album. Their last album, 2013’s Hand On The Plow, was well received and had the band poised for an even bigger audience. Since 2008, The Tillers have toured and spent some time writing. They also built a substantial following. After a lengthy absence, they are back with a self titled album, that in some ways could be seen as a second debut album. The Tillers is an excellent album full of great songs and stunning playing. It is an album that should not be ignored, and once you put it on your player, it is near impossible not to give it your full attention.
The band is comprised of Mike Oberst (banjo, vocals) and Sean Geil (guitar, vocals), who are two of the original members. They are joined by Sean’s brother, Aaron Geil (bass) and recent addition, Joe Macheret on fiddle. This line-up went into the studio with producer Mike Montgomery (Jeremy Pinnell, The Breeders) and basically recorded the songs live to tape.
The result is an incredibly impactful album. This is roots/Americana music played the way it was intended to be played, with tight harmonies, strong melodies and a beautiful spacious sound. Although these guys have roots in punk rock, the music is pure and the punk influence is felt in the energy of the music.
Lyrically the album is stunning. This album is life, family, loss, politics, and work. All areas of life are addressed and in the end no solution is offered, but there is a feeling of togetherness and unity. It is not surprising that the only cover on the album is a song written by Woody Guthrie (“All You Fascists Are Bound To Lose”) as the ghost of Guthrie is felt throughout the entire album. Listen to “The Old General Store Is Burning Down”, an incredible song about progress and the loss of an era. Simply beautiful.
