Elk City – Everybody’s Insecure (2018)

Elk City leaders Ray Ketchem (drums and production) and Renée LoBue (vocals) had plenty to keep them busy during the eight years that separated 2010’s House of Tongues and 2018’s Everybody’s Insecure. Ketchem opened a successful recording studio in Montclair, New Jersey, and LoBue occasionally helped him out with various projects. But you have to give them credit; they’ve managed to stay firmly on message after a long layoff from the band. Everybody’s Insecure doesn’t entirely pick up where House of Tongues left off; Ketchem’s production skills have gotten a bit sharper with time, and the album sounds a bit fuller than much of their previous work. The set also finds Ketchem and LoBue working with some new collaborators; guitarist Sean Eden is the only other holdover from the last incarnation of Elk City, with keyboardist Carl Baggeley and bassist Martin Olson debuting on this LP. But the well-mannered and finely crafted arty pop that’s been the band’s stock in trade since 2000 is ultimately little changed here, and LoBue’s coolly theatrical vocal style and thoughtful if oblique lyrical stance are as strong and distinctive as they’ve ever been. Elk City are quite good at generating melodies that fit their template; tunes like “25 Lines” and “No Depth” display an admirable amount of hooks and energy, while more introspective tracks such as “Souls in Space” and “He’s Having a Baby” show off the band’s ensemble skills. At their best, Elk City sound like what 10,000 Maniacs could have been if they’d grown past their folkie inclinations, and Everybody’s Insecure shows the group has matured gracefully, sounding smart and adult without tossing aside the energy of their younger days.

Thom Chacon is one of the most interesting singer-songwriters of the new American generation. Musically he is the son of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Bruce Springsteen but his story and his experiences have allowed him to develop a personal style that we could call “frontier songwriter”. The border is between the United States and Mexico, between the future and memory, hope and roots. After five years from the previous work we do not hide that there was a certain expectation for this “Blood In The Usa” and, on balance, we must say that the album keeps all the promises and goes even further. A small great record from a songwriter who grew up unexpectedly. “Blood In The USA is a pure, Dylanian record, with the right roots and a handful of superb songs, songs that grow listening after listening.

Wreckless Eric is Eric Goulden. He was given the name to hide behind. After a while he realised he was stuck with it. His recording career began in 1977 when he was little more than an ex-teenage art student with the enduring “Whole Wide World” (recently a Billboard chart hit all over again for the US band Cage The Elephant). He sidestepped the mechanics of fame and became Britain’s premier underground household name, much loved and often underestimated.
Construction Time & Demolition is the culmination of over forty years of touring and recording – a life of hardship, creativity and getting away with it. Loud, dissonant, lyrical, sometimes gently melodic, Construction Time & Demolition is cogent music for desperate times.

A terrific Moroccan cassette with superfine playing, frenetic energy, and expressive vocals. Likely from the late 1980s or early 90s. Tim has posted other rocking examples of Zaêri on MTS; if you like this one, there's a lot more of this kind of thing there. (Though I should admit that I'm altogether unclear what, exactly, Zaêri means.)
Another incredible gem from last year's massive haul at Naseem Meat Market & Grocery right in in Astoria, Queens.
