Phil Madeira is a well-known name in the Americana fan community for many things. He’s a longtime sideman, most famously for the last decade as one of Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Boys. He’s a session player, with credits on enough albums that likely any fan of the genre has him on their shelf. He’s a celebrated songwriter, with hits for a number of other artists, most notably his Grammy winning co-write of “From This Valley” with The Civil Wars. As a producer, he’s released two highly reviewed gospel albums under the Mercyland moniker. But, despite releasing albums sporadically throughout his career, he’s never really been known as a solo artist. That could be about to change on April 6 when his newest album, Providence, hits the shelves.

Even though Animal Flag have been making music since 2009, it’s best to think of the Boston-based band’s new album, Void Ripper (due out April 13th on Flower Girl Records), as a beginning rather than a continuation.

For starters, it’s the first release from the band’s current lineup — singer/guitarist Matthew Politoski, guitarist Sai Boddupalli, bassist Zach Weeks, and drummer Alex Pickert — but perhaps more importantly, it’s another entry in Animal Flag’s continual reinvention.

For every step along Animal Flag’s musical path — from their early days as a solo folk/electronic project for Politoski through 2012’s Everything Will Be Okay, 2013’s The Sounds of Sleep and 2016’s LP — another collection of songs brings the chance to build something great, squeeze every ounce of passion out of it and then demolish it in favor of a new frontier. “I tend to think of the music I’m apart of as an album-by-album endeavor,” Politoski says. “Each one is its own thing that creates a universe.”

Yet for all the changes the band have endured over the years, both musical and member-wise, their pasts still do color the present. Heavily influenced by folk artists like Sufjan Stevens and David Bazan, Politoski’s meditative musical voice gives Void Ripper an introspective aura that counters the heavy rock influences of his bandmates.
To that end, Void Ripper is all at once intimate and expansive, booming alternative rock often shrouded in dark undertones and the occasional electronic flourish but colored with introspective soul-searching themes. The band juxtapose the immediate (“Stray”) and the ethereal (“Why”) impeccably on the nine-track album, but they admit it took a few attempts to hone the sound.

The Wishing Tree is, believe it or not, the first studio recording by the redoubtable trio of John Doyle (guitar), John McCusker (fiddle/whistle) and Mike McGoldrick (flute/whistle/uilleann pipes). They do seem to have been around forever and continue to play together in different combinations on each other’s and on other people’s albums – Doyle and McGoldrick featured on last year’s excellent Usher’s Island release and McGoldrick is about to release his fifth solo album. So The Wishing Tree was certainly long awaited – their previous live album was recorded in 2009 and released in 2012 – but it was definitely worth the wait. Not every track immediately reveals its’ depths, but that subtlety is at the core what makes this such a great album.

The trio started out following their first Transatlantic Sessions together in 2007 – a project all three continue to be involved in. When you are as busy as these three ‘top of their game’ musicians, you find time when and where you can. Mike McGoldrick said that just a few days before they recorded the album he and John Doyle went out to eat to have a discussion about what tunes and songs they might record. No slick advanced planning here then, and none needed. Anyone who has seen them play live will know only too well how comfortable they are in each other’s musical company and how well they pick up and follow each other’s musical cues.

A feature of their work collectively and individually is a well-founded confidence in writing their own tunes and songs and The Wishing Tree kicks off with a typically self-assured driving set of reels, two from McCusker and one from McGoldrick. The first and titular track was aired on McCusker’s Scots Trad Music Award nominated 2016 Hello, Goodbye album. It starts with John Doyle’s familiar rhythmic guitar and then reassuringly, matched stride for stride, the fiddle and flute come in. The next two tunes in the set are no less breezy. Dearne Valley Reel by McGoldrick, the last of these, is named after the location of the studio near Doncaster where the album was recorded. A music workshop was set up in 1985 just after the miner’s strike to alleviate the problems of unemployment in the area. They now enjoy an affordable, state of the art studio which is well used by local bands and community organisations.

Posthumous Release From Mark Otis Selby Launches Moraine Music’s Naked Sessions.

Before the full-blown production, the multi-track recording for the big stage sound and lights, an artist sits in a room with nothing but a new song, an instrument and a deep desire to express something true – laying down the song as it comes out, no worries about perfection; honest, raw…naked. This is where the real magic often happens – and is frequently never heard again.

Conceived with those moments in mind, Dianna Maher of Moraine Music has launched the Naked Sessions, a collection of live, stripped-down performances by compelling artists playing their favorite songs in the most raw and basic form.

The debut audio release, slated for April 6, is a 12-track posthumous collection from Mark Otis Selby. Featuring tracks recorded live in the studio as guitar vocals, included here are the Dixie Chicks first Number One and a Grammy Award-winning single “There’s Your Trouble,” and two memorable hits, “Blue on Black,” co-written with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the track spent 17 weeks at #1 and was Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Song of the Year. “Mark helped me learn how to express myself, says Kenny Wayne Shepherd, “be creative, and have a voice through music.”

“There is a magic in the simplest version of a song where every word and note are heard…and with Mark Selby, he always played his new songs with captivating passion,” says Dianna Maher. “Many of the versions heard on this LP are the original guitar vocals Mark recorded the day he wrote the song, including “Rise Up,” where you hear Mark & Kenny Wayne enjoying the moment. Mark was not able to do the filmed portion of The Naked Sessions, but he did approve the collection spanning 20 years of live recordings as well as his last recording, ‘Rye & Angostora’.”

Also featured are many compelling songs written with his wife Tia Sillers, including “Back Door To My Heart,” the opening track. “I’d written many songs with my A #1 favorite co-writer, better half and spouse, Tia, notes Selby. “We see eye to eye on so many of these things music wise, life wise, love wise, art wise. If there was anyone I ever needed to let in the back door to my heart, it was her.”<

As a songwriter, Selby’s songs have been recorded by a wide array of artists, including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the Dixie Chicks, Wynonna, Little Big Town, Trisha Yearwood, Johnny Reid, Jo Dee Messina, Lee Roy Parnell, and Keb’ Mo’.

Hailed by Blues Revue as “an electrifying performer,” the Nashville-based recording artist, songwriter, session player and producer released albums with Vanguard and ZYX Records. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Selby spent his youth harvesting wheat and playing in bands throughout the Great Plains. Selby was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Έχω γράψει, κι έχω γράψει λόγια καλά, και για τα δύο προηγούμενα CD των Empty Frame, το “They Think We Are Eskimos” [Legend, 2011] και το “The Blackbird Flies” [bminor RECS, 2014] και το ίδιο θα κάνω και για το παρόν “Who Wants to Ride the Horse”  [bminor RECS, 2018], που μάλλον είναι το τρίτο τους… Πόσω μάλλον, όταν και το εξώφυλλό τους με παραπέμπει στο αγαπημένο “FirstUtterance” των Comus. Εντάξει… μπορεί να μην είναι αυτός ο κυρίαρχος λόγος (εννοείται), αφού οι Empty Frame δεν έχουν κάποια προφανή-προφανή σχέση με τους Βρετανούς τού pagan progressive folk, όμως έχοντας στ’ αυτιά μου τις προηγούμενες δουλειές τους και βλέποντας, ταυτοχρόνως, το συγκεκριμένο cover μού δημιουργείται μια θετική προδιάθεση.

Και δεν διαψεύδομαι. 

Οι Empty Frame (Αντώνης Βαβαγιάννης πιάνο, κιθάρες, φωνή, Καίτη Πάντζαρη τσέλο, φωνή, Μπάμπης Βασιλειάδης ντραμς, Νίκος Σολωμός βιολί, Παναγιώτης Φέτσης μπάσο, φωνή, Χρήστος Καλλιμάνης lead κιθάρες) είναι ένα σχήμα, που ξέρει να γράφει τραγούδια διαφορετικών αισθητικών προκλήσεων, ενταγμένων, πάντως, μέσα στο σύγχρονο rock και folk-rock περιβάλλον (είναι τα έγχορδα που βοηθούν προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, αλλά όχι μόνο), με ενοργανώσεις άλλοτε πιο δυναμικές και άλλοτε πιο έντεχνες. Και τούτο διατηρώντας, πάντα, το δικό τους ύφος και την «προσωπική» τους άποψη γύρω από το πώς θα προβληθούν τα (αγγλόφωνα) κομμάτια τους – καθώς δεν υπάρχει κάποια ιδιαίτερη και εξόφθαλμη ταύτιση με συγκεκριμένες εποχές, σκηνές κτλ. τού παρελθόντος. Έτσι, οι Empty Frameδεν μπορεί παρά ν’ ακούγονται σαν ένα απολύτως σημερινό γκρουπ, που έχει κατορθώσει, την ίδια στιγμή, να ισορροπεί ανάμεσα σε αταίριαστες, εκ πρώτης, αναφορές.

Υπάρχει ένα πάθος στις μελωδίες και τις ερμηνείες –που μπορεί να εκφράζεται το ίδιο καλά τόσο μέσα από τη δύναμη των παιξιμάτων, όσο και μέσω ενός εγγενούς λυρισμού, που ανιχνεύεται (ο λυρισμός) και στα πιο κιθαριστικά tracks, αλλά είναι πιο εμφανής στα χαμηλόφωνα– και που αποτελεί το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό των τραγουδιών των Empty Frame. Τραγουδιών σαν τα “All that remains”, “Wheels” και “Spirit” (το κορυφαίο του άλμπουμ), που φανερώνουν και τη δουλειά που έχει γίνει στο background και τα τρανά αποτελέσματά της.
