Blues vocalist and harmonica player Tommy Dardar released his album Fool For Love in 1999 (it was later re-released as Blues Fool in 2008), then a couple of years later began recording his follow-up. Nine tracks were recorded in 2001, but were left unfinished and unreleased. Following Tommy Dardar’s death in July of 2017, several musicians were brought in to finish the album, at that point a labor of love. And now, at last, we have Big Daddy Gumbo, a seriously fun and enjoyable CD, and testament to Dardar’s talent and joy. It features a couple of songs that Dardar wrote, along with several written by bandmates Johnny Lee Schell and Jon Cleary. The core band on the original recordings, by the way, is made up of Tony Braunagel on drums, Hutch Hutchinson on bass, Jon Cleary on piano and Johnny Lee Schell on guitar. Joining them are Mike Finnigan on organ, Barry Seelen on organ, Joe Sublett on saxophone and Jimmie Rose on percussion, as well as Teresa James, Tommie Lee Bradley, Larry Fulcher and Terry Wilson on backing vocals. (You might recognize several of the names as members of Teresa James And The Rhythm Tramps.) Proceeds from this album will go to Dardar’s family.

Once i attended a meeting where more than half of the participants were blind or deaf. Total chaos.
A deaf person could in the middle of a hot debate stand up and deliver an opinion on a topic that mattered half an hour ago. That annoyed many of the blind.

Most of the others in the room where in wheelchair: it was a meeting of the Gambian Association for the Handicapted, although i am not sure if this is their exact name.

They are united in their struggle for better opportunities for the challenged Gambians. Life is not easy for them and often they find it difficult to find work

The tape of today i bought near their meeting place. The last song on the tape is from another orchestra, i don't know which. I took it from Senegalese radio. It feels like the same style (Casamance?) and is a really really good song.

Ooit was ik bij een vergadering waar meer als de helft van de aanwezigen doof of blind was. Totale chaos. Zo kon een dove persoon in het midden van een verhit debat opstaan en een mening ten berde brengen over een onderwerp dat al een half uur geleden werd afgesloten. Tot irritatie van veel blinden.

De meerderheid van de rest was rolstoelgekluisterd: het was een bijeenkomst van de Gambiaanse Vereniging voor de Gehandicapten, al is dat vast niet de officiële  naam.

Al deze mensen waren verenigd in hun strijd voor een beter bestaan voor de fysiek uitgedaagde Gambianen. Hun leven is niet gemakkelijk en vaak is het al bijna onmogelijk om werk te vinden.

De tape van vandaag kocht ik in een stalletje vlak bij hun vergaderzaal. Het laatste stuk is van een andere mij onbekende band. Ik nam het op van de Senegalese radio. Het voelt als dezelfde stijl (Misschien Casamance?) en is het is een heel erg lekker nummer.

After covering an iconic album by Bob Dylan in its entirety, that being the famously influential Blonde On Blonde no less, how is a band best advised as far as making its next move? That was the inevitable question Old Crow Medicine Show was forced to consider following the accolades that tribute received. After all, one of the main objectives at that juncture had to be to reestablish their own identity, free of anyone else’s shadow, including the biggest of all, that of Mr. Dylan. How then to make an album that might earn equal acclaim, and reaffirm their identity and ingenuity all at the same time?

While some outfits might opt to broaden their base and alter their approach, Old Crow Medicine took the opposite option, choosing instead to go back to basics. Consequently, Volunteer is an album that projects its rustic references, all etched with nostalgia and songs that offer reasons for return to the pleasures of front porch existence. “Child of the Mississippi,” “Dixie Avenue” and “A World Away” celebrate the joys of home and the hearth, and the sheer celebration that comes with knowing there’s a place where one belongs.

‘Funny Cow charts the rise to stardom of a female comedienne through the 1970’s and 1980’s. It is set against the backdrop of working men’s clubs and the stand-up comedy circuit of the North of England. From her troubled childhood to her turbulent adult relationships, the Funny Cow uses the raw material of her life experiences to bring her unique style of comedy to the stage. A stand-up comedienne in an all-male world, Funny Cow delivers tragedy and comedy in equal measure. The film stars Maxine Peake, Paddy Considine, Tony Pitts, Alun Armstrong and Stephen Graham, is directed by Adrian Shergold and produced by Kevin Proctor and Mark Vennis. Brothers Osborne will release their sophomore album Port Saint Joe April 20. The two-time CMA “Vocal Duo of the Year” just released their new single “Shoot Me Straight” off the project which was produced by Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town). John and TJ Osborne co-wrote every track on Port Saint Joe along with frequent collaborators Lee Thomas Miller, Kendall Marvel, Barry Dean, Shane McAnally, Troy Verges and more. The title, Port Saint Joe, reflects the small town on the Florida coast where the real-life siblings recorded the album.

“Port Saint Joe is a sonic representation of who we’ve become not only as a band but as people,” says John Osborne. “Every show we’ve ever played together is on this record. Every song we’ve ever written and every mile we’ve ever ridden has led to the making of this record. Imperfections and all.”
