Along with drummer Warren Hall who previously played with The Drones and bass player Stu Loasby DATURA4 have been steadily building a reputation in their hometown with their live performances. With a healthy nod to Early ’70’s Australian Psych/Blues/Boogie from the likes of Buffalo, Coloured Balls, The Aztecs and latter era Masters Apprentices, “Demon Blues” represents Mariani & Hitchcock’s love of hard hitting bell-bottom blues.

Matthews’ Southern Comfort – Kind Of New (2011)

zz320 kbps | 144 MB | UL |

Looks like the loneliness can get to every singer-songwriter, even the one as experimental in his approach as Iain Matthews, which is why in the last decades he veered off from the venerable solo career to revive his past ensembles – first PLAINSONG and then MATTHEWS’ SOUTHERN COMFORT, a band the artist delivered two albums with shortly after leaving FAIRPORTS. Now, 40 years on and despite the apostrophe in the name, there’s even more of a collective feel, what with Terri Binion’s voice and songs taking a half of the album, yet Iain’s own current attitude is so laid back that all too often the music induces slumber rather than a dream, the best example being a new version of “Woodstock”, where paradise lost gets turned into a foray into sun-kissed orchard. By the same token, the honeyed flow of countrified “Money” lacks the sharpness of its own words, and it’s only anxious “The Way Things Are” and “O’Donnel Street” with their jazzy grit that have cobblestones in their urban stride to bounce off from.

But there’s a clear warning of things to come in the rural sparseness of opener “Letting The Mad Dogs Lie”, the piano and steel guitar wrapping around Matthews’ voice, smooth and soothing, even velvety in the “Kingfish” croon, whereas his female counterpart goes for homespun roughness in “Dear Richard”, asking “Are these the songs you write?” for all the puzzled listeners, and rocks gently in “These Days”. Yet all too often the songs gel into blissful sameness, rippled in places with Bart-Jan Baartman’s mandolin and vocal harmonies, most perfect in “Blood Red Roses”, another Richard Farina’s cover from Iain’s old repertoire. Revisiting here “The Road To Ronderlin” from the group’s 1970’s debut, the veteran dusts off more classics on the companion album, “Kind Of Live”, and adds some new cuts, from “New”, which, on-stage, possess more vigor. That’s where the stardust rubs off.

Like so many other artists, singer Ed Bruce got his start as a rockabilly act for Memphis’ famed Sun Records; however, he was probably best known for his songwriting acumen. Born William Edwin Bruce Jr. in Arkansas in 1939, he cut his first sides for Sun at the age of 17. His career as a frenetic rockabilly performer was largely unsuccessful, however, and by 1964 Bruce had moved to Nashville to become a member of the Marijohn Wilkins Singers. He also entered into a lucrative career singing advertising jingles; his best-known campaign cast him as a character called the Tennessean. In 1966, Bruce signed with RCA, notching his first chart hit with the single "Walker’s Woods." More singles and a change of labels followed, but the singer struggled until 1975, when he took his composition "Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" into the Top 20. The song, Bruce’s best-known, was later a monster hit when covered by the duo of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in 1977. His songs have also been recorded by the likes of Charlie Louvin, Tex Ritter, Tanya Tucker, and Crystal Gayle. After a brief tenure at Epic Records between 1977 and 1978, Bruce achieved his greatest commercial success with MCA in the 1980s. "The Last Cowboy Song," featuring guest vocals from Willie Nelson, hit number 12 in 1980; both "Girls, Women and Ladies" and "(When You Fall in Love) Everything’s a Waltz" also fell just short of entering the Top Ten. In 1981, Bruce hit number one with "You’re the Best Break This Heart Ever Had"; other Top Five singles included "Ever, Never Lovin’ You" (number four, 1982), "After All" (number four, 1983), "You Turn Me On (Like a Radio)" (number three, 1984), and "Nights" (number four, 1986). After the 1986 album Night Things and a 1988 self-titled follow-up, Bruce made a conscious decision to cut back on his music to focus on his acting career, appearing in several made-for-TV films.

11. Gotta Get Back (4:32)
12. Blow Wind Blow (3:28)

Like the prior Sky Still Blue (2014), Gotta Get Back bears the involvement of the Wood Brothers but instead of Oliver Wood in the producers seat, that job is handed off to Wood Brothers keyboardist and drummer Jano Rix. Rix like Wood does nothing to get in the way of Walker, his guitar, his voice and his songs; his job was to make sure all is heard in full glory. Gotta Get Back is a little less guitar-heavy but manages to be timeless overall even more so than its immediate predecessor.
That timeless factor get raised a tad with some help close to Walker’s heart, which brings us back to that family of his. He brought in his father, mother and sister to contribute to string parts for a handful of tunes, something that Seth hadn’t had on his records since Leap Of Faith three albums back, but this time, it’s – ahem – personal. He even assigned dad Scott the task of creating the string arrangements and three sat in a semi-circle around the son as he stood with his guitar and let that naturally soulful voice of his stream out. The best of these family affairs, “The Sound Of Your Voice,” is lifted by Scott Walker’s thoughtful string arrangement coming in and out of focus around a nocturnal organ; the chart pours some syrup on it with none of the sappiness.
The presence of orchestral flourishes do nothing to disrupt the overall down-home vibe of Walker’s music, and while there’s that emphasis on “gettin’ back,” much of the music is connected to Walker’s current New Orleans environs. That is unmistakable when the album leads off with a couple of Big Easy funky numbers “High Time” and “Fire In The Belly.” The former is fueled by frisky piano tinkling and Chris Wood’s acoustic bass, and the latter by Walker’s own good ‘n’ dirty Jimmie Vaughan guitar. “Way Past Midnight” is yet more joyful Nola reverie, a Seth Walker twist on ‘Fess Longhair.
It’s not just the Creole stuff, there’s almost no Southern-birthed music style Walker doesn’t present here with style, grace and nothing more. A little church organ and spiritual chorus of vocals help to make “Back Around” a gospel delight and a rockabilly guitar puts a accent on the jazzy RnB number “Movin’ On.” “Call My Name” is a serving of soul-drenched folk-rock characteristic of classic Dobie Gray, “Turn This Thing Around” sounds inspired by the pre-Beatles doo-wop rock of Dion, and then there’s the breezy, Caribbean soul of “Dreamer.”
Walker takes the airplane to a soft landing with his last couple of songs. “Gotta Get Back” encapsulates Walker’s seamless blend of country, blues and folk ever so subtly reinforced by a horn arrangement and “Blow Wind Blow” is just Walker with an acoustic guitar, harmony vocals and his familial string section.
North Carolina, Nashville, New York, Austin or New Orleans, it doesn’t matter where Seth walker hangs his fedora, his rich musical upbringing is always there with him, on this album and, really, any of his records. Gotta Get Back can’t be considered return to his core strengths and values when he never really strayed from them. Think of it more as a renewal of his vows to the family and music that made him who he is. ~S. Victor Aaron

Soil & "Pimp" Sessions are a Japanese jazz combo who play music inspired by the sound and style of classic bebop, Latin jazz, and cool jazz, but with a funky undertow and the passion, aggression, and force of rock & roll. The group features five musicians — Josei on piano, Tabu Zombie on trumpet, Motoharu on sax, Akita Goldman on double bass, and Midorin on drums — as well as Shacho, credited as "agitator and spirit," who prowls the stage as the group performs and occasionally offers gravel-voiced encouragement. The group first came together when Tabu Zombie and Shacho began appearing at dance clubs featuring jazz nights; as DJs spun groove jazz sides, Zombie would jam along on his horn as Shacho worked the crowd, and the response was strong enough that they eventually formed the band to play full live sets without the DJs. As Soil & "Pimp" Sessions’ reputation on the Tokyo club scene grew, in 2003 they became the first unsigned band invited to appear at the Fuji Rock Festival, and in 2004 they released their first album for JVC Victor, Pimpin’, which was followed by a steady stream of albums and EPs. Giles Peterson, the British DJ who launched the Acid Jazz label, took notice of Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, and after giving them steady airplay on his BBC radio show invited them to play London in 2005. The combo signed with Peterson’s Brownwood Records label for Europe and the U.K., and soon became regulars on the international festival circuit, impressing audiences with their energy and instrumental skill. In 2008, Soil & "Pimp" Sessions struck an American record deal with Koch Records, and Planet Pimp became their first U.S. release. ~ Mark Deming

Well, Steve Howell of Steve Howell & The Mighty Men hails from Marshall, Texas, which is a lot closer to Shreveport, Louisiana than any of these places. That is fortunate for us because his brand of American roots and blues music is flavored by the Sportsmen’s Paradise and the Lone Star State; it is the best of both worlds…

Not only the dissatisfaction of the proletariat class was burgeoning in Russia during the first decade of the 20th century. A recording industry was flourishing, one that was competing with western European companies for an "ethnic music" market. By drawing on the musicality of its neighboring central Asian minorities, this Russian industry was provided with the sounds to succeed. This superb CD is a compilation of 26 of these early recordings. Many of the ensembles heard on this release utilize highly developed vocal techniques, small-bodied long-necked lutes, reed pipes, and compact drums. The reason for this similarity in instrumentation is due to the fact that many central Asian cultures were nomadic and, thus, required their belongings to be portable. Because these recordings are old, you may hear an occasional skip and crackle of the needle. These extrinsic characteristics do not take away from the beauty of the music. If anything, the minor pops and hisses serve to remind listeners of the historical import of these recordings.
