“Steve Miller had started to essay his classic sound with The Joker, but 1976’s Fly Like an Eagle is where he took flight, creating his definitive slice of space blues. The key is focus, even on an album as stylishly, self-consciously trippy as this, since the focus brings about his strongest set of songs (both originals and covers), plus a detailed atmospheric production where everything fits. It still can sound fairly dated — those whooshing keyboards and cavernous echoes are certainly of their time — but its essence hasn’t aged, as “Fly Like an Eagle” drifts like a cool breeze, while “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock ‘n Me” are fiendishly hooky, friendly rockers. The rest of the album may not be quite up to those standards, but there aren’t any duds, either, as “Wild Mountain Honey” and “Mercury Blues” give this a comfortable backdrop, thanks to Miller’s offhand, lazy charm. Though it may not quite transcend its time, it certainly is an album rock landmark of the mid-’70s and its best moments (namely, the aforementioned singles) are classics of the idiom.” (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG)

Erica Blinn’s new release Better Than Gold (Curry House) is a classic roots rock album that’ll draw you in and spit you out on the other side of midnight. Produced by Mike Landolt (Blues Traveler, Maroon 5), it’s Blinn’s third album but the first one to throw some Nashville studio time into the normally Ohio-based production mix.

Opening with the bold “Softer Side,” with Blinn’s driving slide guitar and a 70’s throwback riff by Wade Coffer, the album promises to be anything but soft. “Dance With the One (Who Brought You Here)” continues the catchy vibe with some real down home frenetic harmonica that’s part of Blinn’s signature style. and then it’s back to “A Little Rain,” where Blinn highlights more of her country side.

Maybe the most interesting detail about this album is that Blinn’s father, Jerry Blinn, came up with the part and played bass on “When I’m With Suzie (I Do What I Want), “ which also features Stephen Cooper. “Suzie” and “Don’t You Be Lonely” feature a driving horn section, too, which lend Stones-esque excitement to an rousing build-up song; in the end, it’s a toss-up which of these numbers is the most intriguing of the album.

An earnest ballad “Suitcases and Truck Stops,” is followed by more rockin’ alt-country, and the album is a perfect blend of styles. The songs are written like solid gold, without a trace of forced rhyme in the lyrics or even one of those uncomfortable too-predictable riffs in the music.

Haitian records from the 60’s and 70’s by Sofrito labels Hugo

Blue Motel is the new album by Bart & The Bedazzled, a brand new musical enterprise by Bart Davenport and his seventh album proper since his solo breakout in 2002. Alluding to Los Angeles with the lights down, it’s an amalgam sound of ‘80s English pop and West Coast yacht rock jams, sprinkled with cinematic flourishes clearly influenced by the understated production of L.A. Takedown’s Aaron M. Olson. The jangly pop aesthetic, resplendent with choppy chorus tinted guitar, snappy snares, sax and bass is underlined with life trodden stories about day jobs, dating, financial insecurities, lost innocence and most prominently, time travel.

The album lives somewhere in an imagined past (or future) that is curiously both the 1960s and 1980s conveying the groups’s nostalgia for a fantasy world with a cheeky cynicism, despite a perception of a world that is, for Bart, on the downfall. To that end, Davenport’s songs are, as always, delivered with a happy and sad sensibility reminiscent of the great Burt Bacharach. From the surreal yet humorous ‘The House That Built Itself’ to the sad surf music of ‘Halloween By The Sea’ or the romantic L.A. noir of the title track, Blue Motel arrives with a spoonful of tears, a nod and a wink.

Andrew Sheppard aims to please on his second album, Steady Your Aim. Continuing the authentic and distinctive Americana sound he developed on 2015’s Far From Here, Sheppard steadies his reputation as an artist on the rise. Tempering Outlaw Country with Dylanesque Folk, Andrew Sheppard smooths the rough edges of the former and adds punch to the latter.

“Take A Walk With Me” begins like a lost track from Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde sessions. Folksy acoustic guitar and soulful Hammond organ lay a musical backdrop against which Sheppard waxes poetic about the virtues of leaving the city behind for the pleasures of nature. Singing, “It’s a hell of a world, live it wild and free. Leave the worst behind you now and take a walk with me,” he urges us to get out of our cubicles, be they literal or metaphorical, and behold the natural beauty around us.

Part Steve Earle and part James McMurtry, Sheppard creates evocative, lyrical landscapes with a touch of attitude.

In “Lies As Cheap As Whiskey,” for example, he poetically berates a former lover singing, “You get inside your head and search for some truth. Yet you order another round of lies, 90 proof. And lies as cheap as whiskey are flowing from the bottom shelf, you might as well spend the night alone and drink it by yourself.”

Sheppard even turns his acerbic wit on himself. In “Here At The Bottom,” he revs up the pace with some rowdy Rockabilly guitar chords as he confesses, “I said some things I shouldn’t have said, I let those spirits go straight to my head… Here at the bottom that old saying is true: You have to pay for all that you do.”

Andrew Sheppard shows off his musical diversity as he moves from the straight Country of “Holy Water,” to the anthemic Folk-Rock of “Red Wine & White Roses,” to the touching, Appalachian Blues/Gospel of “Further Away.”

At turns tender and touching, then terse and taunting, Steady Your Aim hits the target with every track.

On February 27, 2018, Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, (comprised in this iteration, of longtime SMB bassist Peter Kerlin and Kerlin’s Sunwatchers battery mate Jason Robira on drums) were close to wrapping up an 18-date tour of the EU and UK with a two-set, one hour and 45 minute show at Cafe Oto, London’s premier venue for adventurous music of all stripes. Highlights of that show are included in this digital only live release, Rare Dreams: Solar Live 2.27.18, recorded before a packed house seated mere feet from the band’s amplifiers. These recordings reveal a the band that is clearly in high spirits and high gear, operating with an expansive, improvisatory fleetness that allows them to stretch the material to almost ludicrous extremes and then let it to snap back to some semblance of form while (somehow) seemingly never wasting a note, a beat, a gesture. The three tracks included here comprise material culled from the two most recent Solar Motel Band records Dreaming In The Non-Dream (No Quarter, 2017) and The Rarity of Experience (No Quarter, 2016) plus a cover of Neil Young’s autobiographical plaint “Don’t Be Denied,” the lyrics to which are reimagined by Forsyth from Young’s evocations of Canada and Hollywood to the more personally relevant geography of New Jersey and Philly.

Έφυγε από τη ζωή, στα 81 της, η Ζωή Κουρούκλη, μία από τις κορυφαίες τραγουδίστριες της δεκαετίας του ’60, που σημάδεψε με την παρουσία της και το χώρο του ελληνικού ροκ, καθώς τραγούδησε αρχικώς με τους Stormies, τους Minis, το συγκρότημα του Βαγγέλη Παπαθανασίου και προς το τέλος της επαγγελματικής δισκογραφικής καριέρας της (στις αρχές των seventies πια) με τους Music Machine.
