In 2018 Joan Armatrading re-signed to BMG. Her first album for the label is the 10 track ‘Not Too Far Away’, scheduled for May release.

Joan writes, produces, arranges and, again, plays all the instruments. A deeply personal album that is both intense, poignant and, at times, positively jaunty, it gets straight to the heart of things. The songs are a catalogue of emotion that is as engaging, direct and relevant as it is individual. No prevarication on this album.

‘Not Too Far Away’ is a great testament to a woman who has gone where no British female artist has gone before and who is not afraid to tell it how she sees it.

London quartet The Magic Numbers return following a four-year hiatus with the release of Outsiders. Co-produced by Dave Izumi in Izumi’s own Echo Zoo studio in Eastbourne, work began on Outsiders in early 2017. The album, though instantly recognizable as a Magic Numbers record in it’s melodies, begins with a more raucous punch sonically. The confidence is more evident than ever before, noticeable immediately in the more bluesy, gnarly guitar sound.

“Try to keep it as plain spoken as possible…” those are some of the first words the viewer hears in Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theatre. A self-narrated musical journey, the film encapsulates the sound and soul of John Mellencamp. Stepping outside the boundaries of a concert film or documentary, Plain Spoken blends highly personal voice-overs from Mellencamp with live footage of him performing with his full band at the historic Chicago Theatre, just 250 miles from his native Indiana. He tells us the story of his Midwestern upbringing, the trials, turns and triumphs of his career, and his overall outlook on life while the music plays, supporting his stories. The result is the essence of John Mellencamp, delivered fully on-screen.

Brent Cobb – Providence Canyon (2018)

Storyteller and musical outlaw Brent Cobb returns on Friday, May 11, 2018, with Providence Canyon .

Georgian Singer-Songwriter and Guitarist Brent Cobb has crafted songs for some of modern Country’s greats, including Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, and the Eli Young Band, to name but a few. As his personal story goes, after moving to Nashville – reportedly on the advice of Luke Bryan – Cobb found himself slowly developing a solid career in songwriting, leading to gigs opening for the likes of Blake Shelton and Sara Evans, as well as appearing on the Southern Family compilation alongside Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, and future tourmate Chris Stapleton.

Under his own moniker, Cobb has crafted a signature sound that incorporates elements of a multitude of genres all under the banner of Americana, releasing two full-length albums to date: his 2006 debut, No Place Left to Leave, and 2016’s major label debut, Shine On Rainy Day. For the latter, Cobb received a 2018 Grammy Award nomination for Best Americana Album.

On the heels of this accomplishment, Brent Cobb is set to return with his third full-length offering, Providence Canyon. Recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio A with Grammy Award-winning Producer Dave Cobb (that would be, yes, Brent’s cousin and longtime collaborator), the 11-song collection sees Cobb cementing his talents as a superb storyteller.

Providence Canyon begins with the gentle Folk-meets-Country sensibility that anchors the glittering sweep of the titular “Providence Canyon.” Then, Cobb and his band get into a groovy little jam session on “King of Alabama” before they launch into the swank and sass parade of the gritty “Mornin’s Gonna Come.”

Personal tales of a man on the road are at the center of the delicate melodies of “Come Home Soon,” while there is a swampy grit to the stellar guitars on the whiskey-sippin’ stomp of “Sucker For A Good Time.” The glistening, languid lament of “High In The Country” presents a somber sling that flows flawlessly into “If I Don’t See Ya.” Here, Cobb keeps the bluesy jam session rolling with a superb representation of the great musicianship on display throughout Providence Canyon.

Cobb’s signature blend of Americana weaves throughout the core of the funky stomp that is a finger-waving, tsk-ing tale of infidelity,“.30-06.” Meanwhile, there is a beautiful Folk influence embedded in the largely acoustic “Lorene,” fraught with some solid advice. Cranking it back up, there is the gently rocking, toe-tappin’ “When The Dust Settles” before he goes out guns-a-blazin’ with “Ain’t A Road Too Long.” On the closer, Cobb dips into the bluesy Outlaw Rock spirit once again, leaving off with energy.

On Providence Canyon, Cobb weaves together gritty tales that cross fluidly through multiple genres to create a patchwork quilt of Americana; the end result is something that lends itself beautifully to touring with the equally-talented and beloved likes of Chris Stapleton. This, therefore, is no Pop Country record: instead, Cobb has authored a collection of stories that coalesce together to formulate a cohesive unit that speaks of letting go and hitting the road, all spoken through superb musicianship baked in the Georgian dirt.

Mark Kozelek – Mark Kozelek (2018)

The 11-track collection was mostly recorded in two San Francisco hotels, the Mark Hopkins Hotel and Seal Rock Inn, and Hyde Street Studios, also located in the Bay Area. “The album was recorded at hotels to take a break from the dark, windowless atmosphere of studios, and to see how atypical recording environments would affect my music,” Kozelek explained last year.

Kozelek manned all instruments throughout the LP, except for the drums on “Sublime”, which were handled by Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley. The early single and opening song, “This Is My Town”, is an ode to San Francisco and features references to local heroes the Grateful Dead.

Mike Zito – First Class Life (2018)

There may not be a more honest bluesman than Mike Zito, whose 15th album ‘First Class Life’ comes out May 11 on Ruf Records. The rocking yet poignant title track explores his journey from addiction to sobriety and then musical recognition; he is a two-time 2017 Blues Music Award nominee. “Second chance at a first class life,” he sings, recalling the hard times. The Texas-based musician smiles and continues, “I grew up poor in St. Louis, and now I’m travelling the world to sing my songs.”

Zito’s star has been on the rise of late both solo and as a member of the Royal Southern Brotherhood, with bandmates Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Charlie Wooten and Yonrico Scott.

As is fitting for a man with the word “Blues” tattooed across his picking hand, ‘First Class Life’ focuses squarely on blues with heart and chops to spare, not to mention wit and openness. The punchy “Time For A Change” conjures the tension in the world today while the exquisite Memphis-style song, “The World We Live In,” which recalls BB King in its world-weariness. The electrified blues bounce of “Dying Day” finds Zito swearing lifelong allegiance to his wife. “Old Black Graveyard” sets the scene of a bluesman’s final resting place and its disrepair, along with some possible supernatural influences, with Zito’s masterful slide guitar flourishes driving it home.

Yet the record’s darker moments are offset by cuts like “Mama Don’t Like No Wah Wah,” the funky crash-bang-wallop gem written with Ruf labelmate Bernard Allison about the late legend Koko Taylor. “Bernard told me about his first gig as guitarist for Taylor,” laughs Mike. “Koko didn’t like any effects on the guitar, she wanted it to sound natural. When Bernard made an attempt to use an effect on his guitar after playing with her for months, he got caught. ‘Mama don’t like no wah wah’ is what he was told. That’s a song to me!” The two guitar slingers trade off, trying to one up each other atop a funky blues groove, including Allison pulling out his forbidden wah wah pedal. The tongue-in-cheek “Back Problems” is a showcase for Zito’s wit as a songwriter.

In addition to the press and Blues Music Award love, Zito has earned from fellow artists. Anders Osborne says, “I love Mike Zito! He’s got that rare kinda voice that resonates in your soul. All his hardship, life experiences and kind heart oozes out of every note his sings. His guitar playing dances delicately between a contemporary blues virtuoso and an old fashion soul man. Mike continues to impress me with his straightforward and honest songwriting. His joy and grace shine through every record he makes. “

Luke Winslow-King – Blue Mesa (2018)

513tA3WuLUL._SS500.jpg320 kbps | 92 MB | LINKS

Luke Winslow-King’s latest album is an example of craftsmanship at the highest level, radiating a warmth and timeless elegance. Adept at mixing country, blues, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, and folk influences intuitively and masterfully, Luke shapes a mood from many sources and shepherds it to a unifying place of acceptance and hope. Blue Mesa is both stately and approachable, manifestly proficient but deeply personal.

What sets this album above the singer and guitarist’s previous work is how he’s absorbed the offerings of a life in music. Born and raised in the Northern Michigan town of Cadillac, he moved to New Orleans at 19 and spent the next 15 years fully immersing himself in the musical waters that flow through there. Now that he’s moved on, it is the larger world, and the people and places in it, that enthralls him. From these travels and friendships comes a deeper and richer perspective on the American musical traditions he fell in love with at an early age.

From the first track, Luke effortlessly draws the listener into his genre-expansive, dynamic world. “You Got Mine,” co-written with friend and legendary local musician “Washboard” Lissa Driscoll (who passed away in September 2017), enchants with its laid back grace. Delicate touches of Paul Simon and Robert Cray color this paean to unconditional friendship and camaraderie. With crisp guitar lines evoking Mike Campbell, the gospel-tinged call-to-action “Break Down the Walls” and the easy-country amble “After the Rain” sit astride the solemn and the uplifting. The subtle Stax-inflected soul of the title track casts a disintegrating relationship against the inspirational scenery of the desert Southwest. “Farewell Blues,” a song written after he found out about his late father’s cancer diagnosis, has a resolute drifter’s wandering heart to guide it.

But no matter where he goes, the current of the Crescent City still tugs at Luke’s music. The sweaty riffs of “Thought I Heard You” are as hot as the beer is cold and the syncopated horns on “Chicken Dinner” are a big, playful flirtation. The psychedelic swamp boogie of “Leghorn Women” brims with charm, both suave and sinister, while the Tom-Petty-on-the-levee vibe of “Born to Roam” makes it a classic-in-the-making road trip anthem.

Blue Mesa was recorded across the globe in the Tuscan fortress village of Lari, Italy and features long-time collaborator and Italian blues guitar dynamo Roberto Luti, Chris Davis of King James and the Special Men, and Mike Lynch (Bob Seger, Larry McCray) on organ, among others.

Luke Winslow-King has collaborated with New Orleans legends and wunderkinds alike, including Dr. John, John Boutté, Luti, Little Freddy King, Washboard Chaz, and Meschiya Lake. In addition to holding down residencies at numerous venues and releasing four studio records over the course of nine years, he has toured extensively in North America and Europe, appearing on notable stages such as Austin City Limits, New Orleans JazzFest, Azkena Rock Festival (Spain), Paradiso (Netherlands), Maverick Festival (UK), and countless more.
