Bryony Griffith – Hover (2018)

Hover is the second solo album from renowned English fiddle player and singer Bryony Griffith, but her first of purely traditional fiddle tracks. Following the success of her debut solo album, Nightshade, in 2014, Hover’s release coincides with 25 years of performing, recording and teaching English folk music and song.
Bryony is among the few fiddle players whose repertoire draws almost exclusively on traditional English tunes, with a particular passion for the more unusual dance tunes of her native Yorkshire and surrounding counties.
With a background in playing for dancing, it is no surprise that several of the tracks have been played for dance teams such as Dog Rose Morris and The Newcastle Kingsmen Sword Dancers, but others have been sourced from friends, sessions, digitised manuscripts and Bryony’s extensive collection of tune books.
Bryony’s vibrant, punctuated and commanding interpretations lift the tunes for dancers and exemplify a distinctive English fiddle style, but Hover also showcases a more gentle, elegant feel, complimented by her skilful and sensitive arrangements. The bold, solo tracks allow the tunes to speak for themselves, while the addition of Ian Stephenson’s guitar and double bass brings variety and depth to the album.

Beatrice Deer – My All to You (2018)
Over ten years ago, Beatrice Deer left her hometown of Quaqtaq, QC (population: 376) and moved to Montreal. She set out to achieve three goals: to get more serious about music, to pursue a higher education and make sure her children have more educational options, and to go to therapy.
My All to You, Deer’s fifth album and a confident step forward, feels like the culmination of her accomplishments. As Deer writes in a press release, “My All to You is all about owning up. It’s about reconciliation with yourself — which is the hardest thing to do.”
There’s something reassuring about the warm folk-rock tones of Deer’s trilingual (she sings in Inuktitut, English, and French) album. The tracks are centred by a steady beat, as if mirroring…
…Deer’s own even-tempered heartbeat, and fluctuate between cleaner and more roughed-up instrumentation. Opener “1997” has a laid-back and wistful vibe, “Qaujimagit” is hazy but determined, and “Immutaa,” a traditional song, sounds positively buoyant, like the first warm breeze after a long winter.
Beneath these tones, Deer sings of her joys and fears and hands them to us with a smile. On the title track and on “Mali,” Deer sings of finding her inner strength to get through tough times: “I have no doubt in me even if times are challenging,” Deer sings on the latter track. Closer “You’re With Me,” also feels like a personal revelation as Deer acknowledges she is not navigating the world alone.
For Deer, a resolution has been found and My All to You is like a sigh of relief. As Deer sings in “Isumavunga”: “I can finally feel as I finally let go.”

BLUES REVIVAL 47: SPECKLED RED (1892-1973)
Από τους μεγάλους, ιστορικούς πιανίστες του blues, ο Speckled Red γεννήθηκε το 1892 κάπου στην Georgia. Μετά από διάφορες περιπλανήσεις της οικογένειάς του θα βρεθεί στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’20 στο Detroit, αλλά μετά και πάλι στο Νότο, στο Memphis, όπου και θ’ αρχίσει εκεί να αποκτά, σιγά-σιγά, μια κάποια φήμη.

Το 1929 ήταν μια καθοριστική χρονιά για ’κείνον. Θα πραγματοποιήσει το πρώτο προσωπικό του session (για την Brunswick), μέσα από το οποίο θα βγει μία από τις μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες της εποχής, το “The dirty dozens”. Παρά ταύτα η Μεγάλη Ύφεση θα τοποθετήσει και τον Red στο περιθώριο.
Ο Rufus George Perryman, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό όνομά του, δεν θα εμφανισθεί ξανά επισήμως πριν το 1939, όταν, επιστρέφοντας στο Βορρά, θα κάνει ένα session για την Bluebird στο Σικάγο. Έκτοτε, όμως, θα χαθούν και πάλι τα ίχνη του. Αντιγράφουμε εδώ κάτι από το σημείωμα του Bob Koester, στο οπισθόφυλλο του άλμπουμ του Speckled Red“The Dirty Dozens” στην Delmark:
«14 Δεκεμβρίου 1954, κι ένας θρύλος επανέρχεται στη ζωή. Η ιστορία τής ανακάλυψης αρχίζει στη Νέα Ορλεάνη, όταν ο ερευνητής της jazz Dick Allen έμαθε από τον Roosevelt Sykes ότι ο Henry Brown (επίσης σπουδαίος πιανίστας) ζούσε ακόμη εκεί. Το νέο έφθασε στον Charlie O’ Brien, ο οποίος χρησιμοποιώντας το ταλέντο του στις αναζητήσεις (ήταν αστυνομικός) ξετρύπωσε όχι μόνο τον Brown, αλλά και τον Speckled Red, όπως και άλλους ακόμη».
Ο Speckled Red έπαιζε πάντα με απαράμιλλη δεξιότητα στα jazz bars και τα clubs, έτσι δεν ήταν δύσκολο για ’κείνον να προχωρήσει αμέσως σε νέες εγγραφές, οι οποίες και θα πραγματοποιηθούν τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1956 για την Tone, του πιανίστα Erwin Helfer. Μερικά κομμάτια απ’ αυτό το session, συν κάποια ακόμη από τον Ιούνιο του ’57, θα αποτελέσουν το πρώτο LP του καταλόγου της Delmar(k), του περιώνυμου “The Dirty Dozens”.
Θα ακολουθήσουν εγγραφές σε Ευρώπη και Αμερική, όμως τα χρόνια είχαν πια βαρύνει για τον καλό μουσικό, καθώς λίγες φορές θα καταφέρει να εμφανισθεί μπροστά σε κοινό στα χρόνια του ’60, πεθαίνοντας μάλλον αγνοημένος, το 1973, στα 81 χρόνια του.

Gay friendly Eurovision, Eurovision της «διαφορετικότητας» και τρίχες κατσαρές. Από τη στιγμή που τα τραγούδια είναι για τα σκουπίδια, όπως το απαράδεκτο ισραηλινό ή το κακό ιρλανδικό, η «διαφορετικότητα» είναι ανήμπορη από μόνη της να κάνει τη διαφορά.
Αν κρίνω, δε, από το γεγονός πως το ωραιότερο ελληνικό τραγούδι για τη «διαφορετικότητα» (θα το αποκαλούσα έως και συγκλονιστικό) είναι σχεδόν 40 χρόνια παλιό μπαίνω σε μαύρες σκέψεις…
Αν κρίνω, δε, από το γεγονός πως το ωραιότερο ελληνικό τραγούδι για τη «διαφορετικότητα» (θα το αποκαλούσα έως και συγκλονιστικό) είναι σχεδόν 40 χρόνια παλιό μπαίνω σε μαύρες σκέψεις…
Το τραγούδι που στείλαμε στη Eurovision ήταν της πλάκας. Απρόσωπο, δήθεν, ψωροκωσταινέικο και με κακή παρουσίαση (είχαν δίκιο που το έφτυναν σύσσωμοι οι… φιλελέδες). Ό,τι πρέπει για CD-single με την Αυγή της Κυριακής…
Βέβαια το κυπριακό ήταν εντελώς για χέσιμο, χειρότερο και από το ελληνικό, με κακή τραγουδίστρια και με γελοίο συνολικότερο διάκοσμο. Αγιέ, αγιέ, αγιέ, γέα, γέα, αγιέ και… φούτσες μπλε. Ούτε για στριπτιτζάδικο στο Δουργούτι…
