    On “Medoro Madera”, Rubén Blades inhabits his ‘alter-ego’ Medoro Madera – a Cuban octogenarian who has made brief appearances on his albums since 1997. Here the entire album is devoted to Madera singing mostly songs from the 20s and 30s, backed by Roberto Delgado with a quasi-conjunto version of his orchestra. Blades explains how he creates the Medoro Madera voice saying “I can produce such an effect by channeling the spirit of the old Cuban soneros, my true inspiration for this work, and by doing what in Spanish is known as “impostacion”. This voice technique helped me create a different color, potency and timbre to my natural voice.”

    Πέθανε στα 88 του ο Tom Wolfe, ένας από τους πιο σημαντικούς χρονικογράφος της ψυχεδελικής περιόδου, βασικά μέσω του βιβλίου του The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test(1968), που είναι κατά βάση ένα «από τα μέσα» ημερολόγιο των δράσεων του Ken Kesey και των Merry Pranksters, σχετικό με το προμοτάρισμα του LSD στα χρόνια του ’60.
    Έχουν βγει κάποια βιβλία του Wolfe στην Ελλάδα, όπως το Στο βωμό της Ματαιοδοξίας και το Ένας Άντρας με τα Όλα του, αλλά όχι και το The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

    Υπάρχουν «φίλοι» μου, που υποστηρίζουν τα εγκλήματα του Ισραήλ στη Γάζα.
    Δεν θα τους διαγράψω. Δεν διαγράφω ποτέ κάποιον που μου έκανε (αποδεκτό) αίτημα φιλίας (κατόπιν κάποιας σκέψης και μελετώντας το προφίλ μου υποθέτω), ακόμη κι αν έχει αντίθετες απόψεις μ’ εμένα σε ορισμένα ζητήματα, καθώς πάντα θα διατηρεί το δικαίωμα να εκφράζει στον δικό του «τοίχο» (στο δικό του «σπίτι») εκείνο που πιστεύει (ή νομίζει) δίχως συνέπειες. Αλλά και στο δικό μου «τοίχο» ενδεχομένως (μιας και είμαστε «φίλοι»), υπό κάποιες προϋποθέσεις βέβαια, που έχουν να κάνουν όχι με την ουσία των όποιων απόψεων, αλλά με τον τύπο.
    Οι ύβρεις, οι ειρωνείες και οι ψευτοτσαμπουκάδες είναι τρεις καταστάσεις, οι οποίες δεν θα γίνουν ποτέ αποδεκτές σε μια συζήτηση.

    Σ’ ένα απαράδεκτο (ως συνήθως) κείμενο τού προταγκόν, και έξτρα σκανδαλοθηρικό εγώ θα πω, όπου όλα ανακατεύονται και μπερδεύονται δίχως αρχή και τέλος –με τον Leo Ferre π.χ. να παρουσιάζεται έτσι αβασάνιστα, μέσω του “Petite”, ως ο τροβαδούρος της παιδοφιλίας!– και με μόνο βασικό στόχο να καταστεί η Αριστερά, για άλλη μια φορά, ως η πηγή όλων των δεινών της ανθρωπότητας, επιχειρείται να συνδεθεί ακόμη και ο διαβόητος βιαστής και παιδοκτόνος Δουρής με το Μάη του ’68!

    Μπήκαν κάτι πανύβλακες σ’ ένα δισκάδικο και ρωτήσανε για Λένα Πλάτωνος… αν υπάρχει. Δεν τους αρέσουν φαίνεται οι τιμές στο discogs και ψάχνουν για μαλάκες…
    Βγάζει λοιπόν και ο δισκάς από την καβάτζα το «Γκάλοπ» και τους λέει… 100 ευρώ, άπαιχτο… Όπου φύγει-φύγει τα κωθώνια…
    Εγώ θα τους έλεγα 500, για σπάσιμο… γυρίζω και του λέω.
    Δε φτάνει που είναι χάπατα αυτοί οι χιψτερωτοί, είναι και τελείως άφραγκοι…

    Βγήκαν τώρα κάτι άσχετοι σαν τον Δημήτρη Κανελλόπουλο στο e-tetradio.gr –που θέλουν να το παίξουν προχωρημένοι και-καλά, και μέσα στα πράγματα– να μας πουν πως η χιπχόπ πατσαβούρα που ακούει στο όνομα “This is America” κάποιου Childish Gambino, είναι… «ένα τραγούδι, που έγινε κλασικό μέσα σε λίγες μόλις μέρες»!!
    Τι λέτε ρε! Σοβαρά; Πόσο κλασικό δηλαδή; Θα το ακούμε και μετά από τρεις μήνες ή θα βγει κάποια άλλη… κλασική χιπχοπμαλακία, που θα πάρει τη θέση του;
    Εντάξει οι Αμερικάνοι πλασάρουν ό,τι παπαριά τους κατέβει για να πουλήσουν και από ’κει και πέρα, με τη δύναμη των μέσων που διαθέτουν, σπέρνουν αυτή την παπαριά σ’ όλο τον κόσμο και όποιον πάρει ο χάρος. Και όχι μόνο στη μουσική, σε όλα.
    Έχει στίχους λέει το “This is America” (γιατί, από πλευράς μουσικής, είναι για κλάσιμο). Τίποτα δεν έχει. Κοινότοπες αηδίες, απ’ αυτά που μπορεί να συμβαίνουν σε κάθε γειτονιά του σύγχρονου κόσμου, από τη Μανίλα μέχρι το Λάγκος και από το Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ μέχρι τη Τζακάρτα (με ηλίθιους που παίζουν με τα όπλα ή και με χωρίς όπλα), και που για να τα περιγράψεις καλλιτεχνικά θα πρέπει να έχεις τ’ @@ ενός Curtis Mayfield π.χ. ή ενός Gil Scott-Heron.
    Κάποτε οι μαύροι παρήγαγαν μουσικό πολιτισμό, τώρα… άσε τα. Φλούδια για κότες μόνο.

    When the scourge of rock ‘n’ roll crossed the Atlantic and invaded Europe in the late 1950s, most people thought it was just another passing fad from America. But no one imagined in their wildest dreams that this “fad” would also be the force that would deal the fatal blow to communism and tear the Eastern Europe’s Iron Curtain to shreds. No amount of Soviet tanks and bayonets was a match for this tsunami. But a young kid growing up in Warsaw, Poland, did know. He heard that sound and knew instantly this was BIG; this was no fad, this was the sound of rebellion. Hearing Bob Dylan’s words, “… But even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked,” he knew it was time to kick ass – with electric guitar. Lucky for him, the communist authorities didn’t take kindly to his ideas and, in no time at all, kicked his ass – straight out of the country.

    Arthur Alexander did what he’s always done – he went for the jugular. “America, here I come!”

    Faster than you can say “Polska Kielbasa,” Arthur was helping to form The Poppees, one of the hottest bands in NYC at the dawn of the punk rock era, a time that changed the face of rock ‘n’ roll forever. The Poppees, often dubbed “The Fab Four Of The Bowery,” played regularly at Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s and became the very first new artist signed by the visionary Greg Shaw to his Bomp! Records label. The band accrued critical acclaim and ignited the just-burgeoning American power-pop scene. Leaving The Poppees behind, Arthur founded his new band, Sorrows, one of the most supercharged power-pop bands NYC had seen, staggering their audiences with blistering live shows. Sorrows scored a label deal with CBS Records and released two albums, their debut Teenage Heartbreak becoming a classic, sought after by crate-diggers from Japan to Iowa. After Sorrows disbanded Arthur relocated to Los Angeles, working as an independent producer helping the next generation of young artists realize their musical vision.

    Finally, after years of producing others, Arthur’s own music came calling again. He selected a batch of songs he had written over the years and recorded his first solo album, One Bar Left, inviting his friends from Sorrows, Wojtek Pilichowski Band, Prima Donna, Dr. Boogie and The Blessings to come along for the ride.

    From the opening thrust of One Bar Left, to the irresistible guitar hook setting the pace for “Hard To Get,” it’s instantly clear that Arthur writes songs that hit the pleasure centers of the brain like a Howitzer. “Shot In The Heart” marries the wide-screen sound quality of an Ennio Morricone film soundtrack with Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” like you haven’t heard since – well, Phil Spector.

    “I’ll Get Your Love Someday” and its Merseybeat-meets-Rockabilly vibe displays the melding of styles Arthur incorporates while never sacrificing the intangibles that make songs hits. There are crunchers like “(She Got Me) Wang Dang Doodle” and a jagged-edged “Psycho-Automatic.” “Money ‘N Love” will make you think you walked into the AC/DC show – with a twist or two. The punk-laced mayhem, chaos and venom of “Dead End Man” will leave you breathless, only to dissolve into the quiet warmth and beauty of “Hello Suzanne.” “Just a Little Longer” (in English and French) has more memorable hooks jangling in your ears than you’ll hear for the coming year. And when Arthur decides to do a cover? He turns it on its head. You’ve never heard Sam Cooke’s classic “Bring It On Home To Me” done like this before. Guaranteed.

    Andrew Wesley Harris has a lot to say about his band’s debut album, so we’re going to let him take the wheel and do most of the talking here.     Desde la desolada Siria suena con especial emoción el nuevo trabajo de Maya Youssef, virtuosa del qānūn: "Desde que empezó la guerra en mi tierra en 2011 hacer música dejó de ser una opción. Era una manera crucial de expresar mis intensos sentimientos de pérdida y tristeza al ver a mi gente sufrir y mi patria destruida". Por suerte, Youssef está afincada en Londres y desde allí pudo realizar este disco enteramente dedicado a la tragedia siria y que se escucha, lógicamente, con una intensa emoción. A ratos cerca de la vanguardia o del jazz, Syrians Dreams es un disco tan triste como necesario.
    El virtuosismo y enfoque único e innovador de Maya Youssef para tocar el qānūn, originalmente un instrumento tradicional, consiste en combinar sus extraordinarios dones musicales con una generosidad de perspectivas, calidez, humor y optimismo.
    El qānūn es un instrumento de cuerda pulsada de Siria, de 78 cuerdas, perteneciente a la familia de las cítaras. También existe en el resto del mundo árabe, Turquía, Grecia, Armenia y Azerbaiyán, pero en formas ligeramente diferentes. La palabra árabe "qanun" se traduce como "la ley": el qanun establece y dirige el tono en conjuntos tradicionales de música.
    Maya Youssef ha actuado en todo el mundo y es ganadora del premio Exceptional Talent, que le permitió migrar al Reino Unido en 2012. Además de su música, lleva a cabo su proyecto de doctorado "Music Healing for Syrian Refugee Children" en la SOAS University of London, donde también enseña el qānūn y dirige el SOAS Middle Eastern Ensemble, además de ser una habitual en la BBC.

    Maya procede de una familia de escritores y artistas progresistas e intelectuales de Damasco. Educada en la gran colección de música que poseía su padre (árabe clásica, jazz, fusión, world music, tibetana, clásica occidental...), comenzó su formación musical a los 7 años en el Instituto de la Música Sulhi al-Wadi en Damasco. Cuando tenía 12 años ganó el Premio al Mejor Músico en el Concurso Nacional de Música para Jóvenes. Continuó en el Instituto Superior de Música y Arte Dramático de Damasco para obtener una licenciatura en Música especializada en qānūn, graduándose en 2007 antes de mudarse a Dubái y, posteriormente, establecerse en Omán en 2009 para enseñar y actuar.
    Producido por Jerry Boys para Harmonia Mundi, Syrian Dreams cuenta con la participación de Sebastian Flaig (percusión), Barney Morse-Brown (cello) y Attab Haddad (oud). Como señala Youssef en el disco, "Este álbum es mi viaje personal a través de los 6 años de guerra en Siria. Es una traducción de mis recuerdos de hogar y mis sentimientos a la música. Veo el acto de tocar música como lo opuesto a la muerte; es un acto de vida y de afirmación de esperanza. Para mí, la música es sanadora y un antídoto contra lo que está sucediendo, no solo en Siria, sino en todo el mundo. Me gusta pensar que mi música devuelve a la gente a la humanidad y al centro de sus corazones, donde no se puede dañar a ninguna forma de vida y donde todas y todos pueden existir juntos en paz". Este viaje personal y su propuesta musical ha supuesto para Maya resultar finalista en los Songlines Music Awards de 2018.
