Σε προηγούμενη κριτική για το λονδρέζικο Portico Quartet (για το πολύ καλό άλμπουμ τους “Art in the Age of Automation”), είχα αναρωτηθεί αν εκείνο που ακούγαμε στο συγκεκριμένο CD είχε κάποια σχέση με την jazz. Το λέω, γιατί ως “jazz” ανεβοκατεβάζουν πολλοί και διάφοροι το συγκεκριμένο γκρουπ, ενώ ως “jazz” βλέπω να χαρακτηρίζεται και το πιο καινούριο άλμπουμ τους, το “Untitled (AITAOA#2)” [Gondwana Records/ AN Music, 2018], στο discogs. Η δική μου γνώμη είναι πως η jazz αποτελεί μία όλο και πιο περιορισμένη επιρροή στο κουαρτέτο και πως εκείνο που υπερισχύει (και στην πιο καινούρια δουλειά του) είναι οι ηλεκτρονισμοί, που διατηρούν στοιχεία από την ambient και το new age, κατατείνοντας όλο και περισσότερο προς έναν… μετεξελιγμένον Mike Oldfield. Δεν τα θεωρώ «προβλήματα», εννοείται, όλα αυτά. Απλώς, τα λέω, για να ξέρουμε με τι ακριβώς (ή περίπου) έχουμε να κάνουμε.

Το “Untitled(AITAOA #2)” περιέχει εννέα συνθέσεις, γραμμένες όλες τους από τους Duncan Bellamy και Jack Wyllie, ενώ διαρκεί λίγο παραπάνω από μισήν ώρα. Επίσης, όλα τα όργανα που ακούγονται στο CD είναι παιγμένα από το κουαρτέτο, πλην των strings σε δύο tracks κι ενός επιπρόσθετου μπάσου σ’ ένα άλλο. Άρα έχουμε να κάνουμε μ’ ένα άλμπουμ, στο οποίο την πλήρη και αποκλειστική ευθύνη του υλικού που φθάνει στ’ αυτιά μας φέρει το Portico Quartet.

Σ’ αυτό λοιπόν το… ημι-ηλεκτρονικό στυλ, που κινείται και η πιο πρόσφατη δουλειά του γκρουπ, δεν υπάρχει κάτι που να αντιβαίνει στα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά τής μουσικής του – έτσι όπως αυτά μας φανερώνονται τον τελευταίο καιρό. Συνθέσεις με απλωμένες μελωδίες, επαναληπτικές στον μικρότερο βαθμό, ισχυρό ρυθμικό τμήμα (θα μπορούσες να το πεις και rock ενίοτε), επιστημονική (έως και ψυχρή) χρήση των πλήκτρων, που πάντως «δένει» με το γενικότερο πλάνο και μερικά tracksανάμεσα, όπως το “Index” ή το “Dust”, που από μόνα τους κάνουν τη μεγάλη διαφορά.

Πάντα ξεχωριστή μπάντα, που μπορεί να ενδιαφέρει ακροατές από τελείως διαφορετικούς χώρους (ακόμη και τους νεο-ρομαντικούς της 4AD – ανθρώπους, δηλαδή, που μπορεί ν’ ακούνε Dead Can Dance και Clan of Xymox).

Fatoumata Diawara established her reputation as one of the finest, most inventive female singers in Mali on the strength of her remarkable debut album, Fatou, recorded seven years ago. Her voice is more soulful and expressive than on her debut, and the songs range from cool, melodic Afro-pop to the gently bluesy Mama, the stomping funk of Negue Negue, and the charming acoustic guitar and cello duet that ends the set. It may be aimed at the international crossover market, but even at its most commercial this is an album that succeeds. And the lyrics – mostly in Bambara, with the occasional burst of English – tackle everything from migration to African identity and demands to end the ban on marriages between different ethnic groups.
