Tori Forsyth – Dawn of the Dark (2018)

After signing with Lost Highway Australia, Forsyth had already written most of the songs that would comprise her debut album, Dawn of the Dark. Her method tends to involve writing down a key line or two, or recording into her phone, then forming a story around that first sketch of an idea. “Songs generally do come pretty easily; when a song wants to happen, it kind of just does,” she says with a shrug. Nicholson was thrilled that the songs Forsyth had written before the record deal were of such high quality that the usual process of pre-production was unnecessary.
“It’s quite rare for someone to not only have a whole batch of really good songs,” he says, “but to also have a pretty solid sense of where they see themselves being positioned, sonically and artistically.”
Her acoustic demos allowed him to hear the raw bones of a song, on which the muscle and flesh of alt-country instrumentation and back-up vocals could be layered. Rather than “trying to salvage a record out of six great songs and four OK ones”, the producer realised that Forsyth’s first album was going to be captured with relative ease. “The stars aligned: the right people, the right songs,” he says. “It was actually a bit of a breeze.”
The result is an accomplished collection of 11 strong songs that announce her as a striking new artist who is only just beginning to reckon with her powers.
As for working with Nicholson? “I was a fan of his records beforehand, so it was really cool to be able to — out of nowhere — just jump straight in with one of the people that I admire,” she says with a laugh. “I’m pretty lucky.”
Forget luck: talent and persistence are the key forces that have driven her thus far. Forsyth’s journey can be traced back to that cold night three years ago, where she conquered her fear to step up to a microphone and start sharing her songs. We’re the lucky ones who get to hear the results of what came next.
