The men in charge back then were the incredible bassist and deviously minded Peter Maynard, sadly no longer with us, along with Paul Ruddick (sax and vocals), Andy Dalton (drums), Nigel Kirkpatrick (trumpet) and Ziad Jabero (guitar/trombone). …but Paul is about as Baghdaddy as they come. As their latest album Bykerumba drops, jumps up, drops, jumps up and dances around, the now fully (im)mature offspring of musical genius and international exploration has once again created a behemoth-ridden dance-fest of a Balkan inspired Latin-folk-ska-punk-funk-rap trunk of thoughtful, political and perfectly observed tracks.
Bykerumba follows in the tradition of the ‘Daddies in that each track is packed full of lyrics that tickle the funny bone while also packing a powerful political punch.
Things to look out for and enjoy on the Newcastle band’s new album include, but are not restricted to: the PHAT liquid bass to kick off Wor Kids; some scintillating sax riffs from be-bearded fascist fighter Paul Ruddick; general horn triumphs most expertly portrayed by Mr Nigel Kirkpatrick on his T-rump; the multi-vocalists, who find that unmistakable beauty somewhere between piss-taking, sweet melodicity and magical eminence (especially the rapped bits). Finally, there are some instrumental surprises, like at the inception of Om Boor, which also makes excellent use of echo and Ziad’s metallic guitar.

Ewan MacColl was a true driving force and historically one of the most important figureheads of the Folk revival of the mid twentieth century. As a youngster he was surrounded by a huge repertoire of songs and stories his parents brought from Scotland when they moved, these along with their strong political views helped shape the then young Jimmie Miller. Ewan gained an interest in politics, then the theatre as he became an actor and playright with strong left-wing beliefs to his true calling as a singer, songwriter within the folk movement. The latter change in direction came from being inspired by the work of one Alan Lomax. Realising the importance of Folk music and the folk music club scene he was able to use this as a platform for his beliefs. In 1953 with Bert Lloyd, Alan Lomax and Seamus Ennis and a few others formed the Ballads and Blues Club in London which was later to become the famous Singers Club.

Ewan MacColl’s recording career took off in 1950 with his first record for Topic Records club. TRC39 ‘The Asphalter’s Song; I’m Champion at Keeping em’ Rolling’ but we start off this introduction To’ release with his most well-known track ‘Dirty Old Town’ released in 1952, again a Topic Records Club release TRC56

It was in 1956 that Ewan MacColl met Peggy Seeger and they embarked upon a life and musical partnership. Between 1957 and 1989 they toured the world giving concerts of traditional and contemporary songs. The duo recorded extensively and collected songs from traditional singers in Britain. Some of the songs featured in this compilation highlight their creative partnership.

This compilation highlights just a few of the 300 published songs which make up a very impressive body of work from a man highly regarded and acknowledged as one of the most important figureheads of the British Folk scene.

Exotica defined a place in time but only a handful of artists defined exotica. Martin Denny coined the term in 1957 when he called an album Exotica but at that point the fad was well underway, kicked off at the dawn of the 1950s by Les Baxter, who released his own groundbreaking album Ritual of the Savage in addition to producing and arranging Voice of the Xtabay, the 1950 debut by Yma Sumac. What all these records had in common was a fascination with the island culture of the Pacific Ocean-specifically the island of Hawaii, which had yet to become an American state when exotica was all the rage in the 1950s. Eventually, Hawaii entered the union and the South Pacific craze waned, but exotica lingered into the 1960s, only to resurface during the ’90s as the anchor of the lounge revival.

Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Exotic Delights, Numero’s deep dive into exotica, appeared in 2018, 20 years after the ’90s lounge craze peaked, which means it could be seen as the revival or a revival, but that’s not quite right. While Technicolor Paradise does contain its fair share of camp-camp is baked into the genre-Numero never winks at its audience with this triple-disc set. Its accompanied by a hefty hardcover book, tracing all of the highways and byways of exotica’s history, while detailing the artists who feature on this 54-track box. None of the genre’s heavy hitters are here, but that’s the point of the whole enterprise: Technicolor Paradise is designed to show how deeply exotica spread in the 1950s and earliest years of the 1960s. The people behind the set-chiefly Ken Shipley, who was assisted by Daniel Shiman on the research and compilation side and Rob Sevier on the production end-achieve this goal by concentrating largely (but not entirely) on acts who recorded for obscure local labels. Often, these acts would cover exotica standards or interpolate themes to their own end, so all this music feels exceptionally familiar even if the recordings themselves are rare. Technicolor Paradise divided into three themes-Daiquiri Dirges, Rhum Rhapsodies, Mai Tai Mambos-which helps maintain the mood while drawing subtle distinctions, such as the very slight surf rock guitars that flow throughout Mai Tai Mambos. These little details are fun but, ultimately, Technicolor Paradise is about the big picture, serving as supporting evidence that the exotica craze was really as vast as it seemed on any number of ’90s lounge reissues. Just as importantly, this music is every bit as frothy and fun as the music made by the well-known names of exotica, and that’s the reason why any hep cat or kitten should get this set. — AMG
