John Parish’s list of musical accomplishments is long, yet for years the self-effacing Bristol native has been happy outside the spotlight. This twice Ensor nominated composer and Mercury Prize winning producer delivers a collection of songs, including a duet with his longtime musical partner PJ Harvey, that should change all that. Bird Dog Dante was completed in a busy year for Parish. On top of being the musical director of the extended PJ Harvey band on their Hope Six Demolition Project world tour, he produced acclaimed albums for This is the Kit, Nadine Khouri, and Aldous Harding.
Parish records songs as they come to him, often with the intent of just capturing the idea. “Like all of my records, Bird Dog Dante was recorded all over the place in odd situations, because I’ll have an idea somewhere and want to record it, then I actually end up liking the sound of that specific recording and want to incorporate it,” says Parish. While a few of the tracks began with the band in Toybox in Bristol, often they were then deconstructed in Parish’s home studio. John’s producer’s ear can focus on a small detail that captures his imagination, which then becomes the foundation to build the song around. On “Rachel,” “Aldous Harding’s beautiful backing vocals were recorded on my phone backstage at her Jools Holland show. I’d been asked to play piano for her, and while we had time to kill in the dressing room before the performance I thought ‘let’s just do the backing vocals now’ – so while listening to the track on my iPhone, she sang into her iPhone. Those vocals were literally recorded with two phones and a pair of earbuds.“ John’s ability to see things for what they are and delight in the details is what makes his work so singular. Exemplified by the album title’s origin, words that just sounded good together, John is an exceptionally skilled artist with a youthful delight and a creative open mind, as well as the ability to masterfully expand on those ideas. It is clear why Uncut said that “Parish is one of Britain’s most resourceful and imaginative studio craftsmen.”

Brad Tuck remembers back about 20 years ago when his dad would spend hours recording traditional songs on his cassette tape deck for his son to hear.
“He would rewind and play, rewind and play, writing down the lyrics, word for word for me to sing and play,” Tuck said, chuckling. “I soon had a songbook of tunes. … I had a knack for it and (my family) just dove right in.”
Growing up in the small Trinity Bay community of Hant’s Harbour, traditional music from groups like the Irish Descendants, Simani, Buddywasisname and the Other Fellers, and The Fables were engrained in him from a young age.
Having learned to play acoustic guitar at age 5, Tuck would often perform at various community shows, concerts and parties as a child, and his songs would almost always be traditional.
While Tuck continued his passion for music, his interests took him in a different direction when, 10 years ago, he moved to St. John’s. After dabbling in various projects, in 2014 he hooked up with Andrew Rodgers and Gary Powers, who grew up in the same area of the province, for some writing sessions. With the addition of Stephen Green of Bay d’Espoir, the four formed Fairgale, a pop/rock band, which quickly gained attention in local music circles, earning Music Newfoundland and Labrador nominations and East Coast Music showcase spots.
“Things just came together for us,” Tuck said.
But the 28-year-old never lost his love of traditional music. So, about six months ago, he decided to record his own traditional album.
“It’s been on my mind the last two or three years, after we put out the original Fairgale CD,” he said. “I didn’t think it would be the worst idea to just dive back into my roots a little bit. I figured it would be fun to step back and put out a traditional release.
“So, I got fed up with just thinking about it and decided to go for it. … I’ve gone full circle.”
With limited funds, Tuck put together a homemade studio in his spare bedroom, placing a mattress against the wall and padding the rest of the room with foam.
“It all came together pretty quickly after that,” he said.

Bluegrass legend Del McCoury will release a new Del McCoury Band album entitled Del McCoury Still Sings Bluegrass on May 25.
The title of the upcoming LP is in reference to McCoury’s 1968 album Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass. The bluegrass patriarch is backed on the new 14-track record by his sons Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo, along with fellow band mates Jason Carter on fiddle and Alan Bartram on bass. Del’s grandson, electric guitarist Heaven McCoury contributed to a cover of Shawn Camp’s “Hot Wired.”
“What I like in a record is variety of moods, of tempos,” Del stated. “I consider myself traditional at heart, but I don’t have any boundaries. I’m just a guy that likes to sing and play music. Whatever strikes me to do I’ll do it. Without wrecking things.”
