Highgate Road arrives from Toronto’s west end, by way of the Niagara frontier. The band delivers folk-infused indie rock that is lovingly rendered. The soaring harmonies of Kathryn Aria give flight to the tightly-crafted songs of Andrew and Emily Pollock.

Adventure Lit Their Star is an eclectic mix created and developed by 30 different collaborators under the wing of the journalist Mark Hodkinson, which is an incredible achievement considering just how many different artists have been involved with the project. This varied unput means that the album is a real kaleidoscopic collection of music and we hear snippets of Lemon Jelly, the Durutti Column, the Gallagher’s, the Charlatans and the Smiths (without Morrissey) throughout. Adventure Lit Their Star has a real Mancunian feel to it, and at the the same it is both new and yet also familiar.

Although Sheffield guitarist extraordinaire has themed this record on the decline of mobile libraries, there’s a distinct lack of whimsy to the music he has created and it is often perhaps too good for a record that has such a theme to it. There’s a dusty sadness to these pieces which combine John Fahey-esque guitar compositions with nice post rock-ish, jazzy drumming which brings to mind both Jim O’Rourke and Ryley Walker.
Not many tracks leave the guitar alone in it’s element but that tracks like ‘Shark With a Monkey Heart’ could benefit from being stripped back to just the captivating guitar. Still, ‘Brighton With Flying Saucer Inc’ has an almost Brian Eno feel to the synth stabs which occasionally hammer discordantly at the beauty.
So good at times, such beautiful compositions….

Abe Partridge comes from Mobile, AL. He’s a singer-songwriter, the kind you might call a “picker” if he came from Nashville. Yet, just when you think he’s going to pull a Townes Van Zandt or Guy Clark, his songwriting takes a left turn and his lyrics go searching through the back alleys of his mind.
On his new album, Cotton Fields And Blood For Days, his second, he sings about troubles, his, yours, the person’s in the cell next to you. He’s had his share, real ones, not First World problems, and his gravel-filled vocals confirm something’s wrong, as the words slither out of his mouth like a snake ready to strike. His lyrics are convincing, as if Partridge has some serious sins for which he must atone. He he knows all too well about sacrifice and salvation, or, at least trying to convince people to give up their life for God. Partridge was kicked in and out of four different theological schools before finally graduating, becoming an evangelical preacher, the fire and brimstone kind. At some point, his his senses got the best of him, and bible-thumping sent him into a deep depression. He left the church, traded in his pawn shop banjo for an acoustic guitar, and returned to the roots of rock ’n’ roll he’d left behind for the ministry. He may not have saved the souls of any of those in Kentucky who attended his preaching in a small Appalachian church, but he saved his own soul by getting out.
