Τι έχουμε ακριβώς εδώ και τι σημαίνει «Συγκατοίκηση» [Puzzlemusik, 2016]; Πρόκειται, απλώς, για την αποτύπωση μιας συναυλίας που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Στέγη, την 28 Σεπτεμβρίου 2013 και η οποία ήταν επικεντρωμένη στις μουσικές του Κ.Βήτα (από την εποχή των Στέρεο Νόβα και φυσικά της προσωπικής διαδρομής του).

Ποιο είναι το «περίεργο» εδώ; Πως στην «Συγκατοίκηση» δεν υπάρχει ίχνος ηλεκτρονισμού. Υπάρχουν φωνές (Κ.Βήτα, Θεοδώρα Μπάκα) και από ’κει και πέρα το ARTefactsEnsemble, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Κορνήλιου Σελαμσή – δηλαδή, από πλευράς οργάνων, σαξόφωνα, κλαρινέτα, βιολιά, κρουστά, πιάνο, κοντραμπάσο, τρομπέτα, φαγκότο, βιολοντσέλο, τρομπόνι, ηλεκτρική κιθάρα, ντραμς, κόρνο, φλάουτο.

Τα κομμάτια που επιλέγονται (δώδεκα στον αριθμό) είναι από τα πιο γνωστά του Κ.Βήτα, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει πως δεν υπάρχουν και τα σχετικώς γνωστά ή σχετικώς άγνωστα ανάμεσα (ενώ, συγχρόνως, δεν διασκευάζονται, για παράδειγμα, το «Αστραλόν» ή το «Μικρό αγόρι»). Θέλω να πω πως η απόπειρα του ARTefactsEnsemble δεν έγινε με στόχο την πιο απτή αναγνωρισιμότητα των όποιων τέλος πάντων επιλογών (κάτι που δεν θα ήταν εκ των προτέρων κακό – το να καταγραφόταν ένα εμπορικό “best of” του Κ.Βήτα, έστω και… ιδιότροπο), αλλά με τη διάθεση να αποδοθεί ένα συγκεκριμένο κλίμα, μέσα στο οποίο θα εντάσσονταν τα συγκεκριμένα tracks – κάτι σαν εκείνο που είχε επιχειρήσει ο Κ.Βήτα στις μουσικές του Μάνου Χατζιδάκι με το “Transformations”  το 2003. Ήτοι: επιλέγουμε ελεύθερα ό,τι υπηρετεί το συγκεκριμένο πλάνο μας.

Ας πούμε, λοιπόν, από την αρχή πως το άκουσμα παραξενεύει. Χρειάζεται δηλαδή το χρόνο του προκειμένου να αποδεχθείς τη «Συγκατοίκηση» – έχοντας, πάντα, στο νου σου τον συγκεκριμένο ηλεκτρονικό κόσμο ή μικρόκοσμο τού Κ.Βήτα. Είναι η αντίστροφη πορεία που δεν πολυ-συνηθίζεται βασικά, που δημιουργεί ένα πρώτο εμπόδιο. Ενώ έχει συνηθίσει το αυτί μας το καθετί να μεταποιείται ηλεκτρονικώς, το ανάποδο κανείς δεν θα το έλεγε σύνηθες και καθημερινό.

Εν πάση περιπτώσει εδώ υπάρχουν versions, που πραγματικά έχουν να πουν και ως πρώτη (καθώς κυλάει το CD) θα τοποθετούσα «Το δωμάτιο», που για μένα αποτελεί μία από τις δυο-τρεις ωραιότερες μελωδίες του Κ.Βήτα – για να μην πω την ωραιότερη. Η Μπάκα έχει άλλο αποτύπωμα από τον Βασιλικό βεβαίως (που τραγουδούσε το «Δωμάτιο» στην «Ένωση»), όμως το σύνολο, εδώ, αναδεικνύει στο έπακρο αυτό το υπέροχο τραγούδι. Όπως εντυπωσιακά είναι και τα κρουστά στον «Κύκλωπα», που επιχειρούν να προσομοιάσουν, με φαντασία είναι αλήθεια, στα αγριεμένα αυθεντικά bleeps (κι αυτό ένα από τα καλύτερα instros του Κ.Βήτα, δανεισμένο από την «Άγρια Χλόη»), όπως θαυμάσια είναι φωνή & φωνητικά στο «Άστρο» (άλλη μια μπαλάντα ολκής, από το προσωπικό ρεπερτόριο του Κ.Βήτα).

Περνώντας στη… δεύτερη πλευρά τού CD θα έλεγα πως ξεκινάμε πολύ δυνατά, με τον «Ασύρματο κόσμο». Το ARTefacts Ensemble αποδίδει σθεναρά το trippy-krautπνεύμα της σύνθεσης, με τα έγχορδα να κάνουν τέλεια δουλειά, και με τα breaksαπ’ όλα τα υπόλοιπα όργανα να διαμορφώνουν το «σωστό» αφηρημένο περιβάλλον (από τις ωραιότερες στιγμές της «Συγκατοίκησης»)… κι όλα τούτα καθώς ακολουθεί η πλήρως αναζωογονητική και υπερ-εντατική νέα «Νέα ζωή» (από την «Ντισκολάτα» του ’93). Το «Ταξίδι στη Γη» (track από την «Βιταμίνα Τεκ» του 1997 με τη φωνή της Πόπης Αστεριάδη) υπήρξε μια από τις πιο… ψυχεδελικές, μελαγχολικές εγγραφές των Στέρεο Νόβα, και με τις αναφορές στην τραγουδοποιία της Λένας Πλάτωνος των mid-80s να είναι κάτι παραπάνω από εμφανείς. Είχα την απορία, εξ αρχής, πώς θ’ ακουγόταν αυτό το τραγούδι από το ARTefactsEnsemble. Αποδεκτότατο, αλλά… απαιτεί το χρόνο του. Η «Νύχτα» (από τον «Άργο»), που αποτελεί την πιο πιστή, ίσως, απ’ όλες της versionsτής «Συγκατοίκησης», όπως και η «Ποπ κατσαρίδα» (που κυλάει καλά) ολοκληρώνουν αυτό το… θα το ξαναπώ, «παράξενο» CD, που είναι κάτι άλλο στην δισκογραφία του Κ. Βήτα πρωτίστως και ενδεχομένως όλων των υπολοίπων.

Ladys & gentlemen...
As you probably noticed if you follow my other blog, I won't post any music there during this month.
I still have hundreds of records that I would love to share here so during the next few weeks I'll post some tapes reminding me of my childhood and the beguinning of my interest for different kinds of music when around 5 years old I discovered the maghrebian tapes stalls at the local market...
A few years ago, We had a trip in Egypt for an homage to Abdel Halim Hafez, this time We'll fly from the Djurdjura mounts in the north of Algeria (a place called Kabylie) to France to get deeply into the music of one of those (almost) anonymous legends of the exodus like there are dozens in France, all workers who had to leave their village to help their famillies in hard times...

This story, like many others, is the story of Slimane Azem (born in 1918 in a farmers familly) who had to travel at 19 years old «for a few months» to the metropole (Algeria is still french at this time) and who never came back...
Bad jobs, the second world war and the urban annonymous parisian loneliness instead of his mountains his village and his familly, Slimane Azem starts to write songs around 1945.

Then, the Algerian independence war and all the troubles you can imagine for an Algerian singer living in France..

If the songs of Slimane Azems talks about his own life in what many would call «Kabyle blues», they mean a lot for his community and soon Slimane becomes the voice of all the Algerian people far from their roots, victims the times. Many 7' records where published, especially in the 60's and 70's (he even got a gold record in 1970 and was one of the best records sales of the year in France) and it's not unusual to ear about him from the french-algerian people (a young hip hop band is even called «Slimane Azem»). afew years ago a documentary came out about his life and his grave in the south of France got visits from people from all around. In the next few weeks we'll get a whole bunch of tapes from him, a great opportunity to (re)discover his work.

About the music itself, Slimane Azem wrote and composed his songs and also played guitar, he was usually backed by all kinds of traditional folk instruments from Algeria: darbuka, mandol, mandolin, flutes, violin and backing vocals... Well, during the next few weeks you'll have plenty of time to enjoy some of the many songs Slimane Azem released, enjoy!

Home es el último disco de Anoushka Shankar, editado por el prestigioso sello de música clásica Deutsche Grammophon, una vuelta a las raíces de la música clásica hindú y, a la vez, un homenaje a su padre, el gran Ravi Shankar, que fue el primer músico hindú que abrió la música de su país al mundo. En definitiva, Home es una vuelta a casa y puede considerarse como una antología pura, donde despliega su virtuosismo al sitar y se muestran las cualidades meditativas y virtuosas del raga.

En esta ocasión, el género se enriquece con dos ragas, "Guru: Raga Jogeshwari" y "Celebration: Raga Manj Khamaj". La primera, a sitar sólo, está dividida en tres partes y dura más de 36 minutos, mientras que la segunda dura 18 minutos y en algunos momentos Anoushka Shankar se encuentra acompañada por Tanmoy Bose con la tabla y Kenji Ota con la tanpura y el bajo.
El proyecto, dirigido por ella misma, viene acompañado por unas largas e interesantes notas en las que explica qué es y cómo funciona la música india, su profundidad espiritual y sus formas melodías y rítmicas, todo en aras de lograr un mayor acercamiento a esta música por parte de las y los oyentes occidentales. Con Home, Anoushka Shankar continúa su viaje explorando formas modernas y frescas de reinterpretar y mantener vivas las hermosas tradiciones musicales de la India.
